Community Bus Stops Transform Brazil - Pop-Up City - 0 views

  • ‘Que Ônibus Passa Aqui?’ (‘Which Bus Stops here?’) is a resident-led initiative which has taken Brazil by storm. Most bus stops in the country do not list which buses stop there, meaning widespread confusion and inconvenience for people wishing to take a bus from somewhere they are unfamiliar with. Waiting at a bus stop only to find out that the bus you want doesn’t actually stop there is a huge waste of time.
  •
"housands of bus stops in Brazil completely lack signage to indicate which buses actually stop there. The nation-wide inconvenience has finally been tackled by one of the biggest community projects in the world."

These Cabs Bring You Anywhere But Home - Pop-Up City - 0 views

  •
" When you jump into a taxi the first thing you do is telling the driver where to go. That's not exactly the case with these Converse-branded cabs that are currently driving around the dark streets of Amsterdam. "This is a ticket to a gig tonight. Stop this car and get in" says the text that's spray-painted on each of the black Fiat Pandas. If you stumble upon a cab with its light on green, you're able to stop it and get in. The driver of the Converse Ticket Cars will take you to a concert somewhere in Amsterdam, but you don't know where you will be taken to until the moment you arrive at the venue and get free two tickets for a gig that's taking place that night. The destinations include some of Amsterdam's famous night clubs and concert halls, such as Paradiso, Bimhuis, and Bitterzoet."

The Quest for the Best Bus Stop Signs - CityLab - 0 views

  •
"What makes a good bus stop sign so hard to find? Part of the answer is the amount of professional expertise it takes to develop clear and useful information displays. Many agencies lack specialized staff or resources; responsibility for sign projects is often left to managers who are really in charge of other projects. "Often, competing priorities result in minimal attention being given to these activities," wrote John Dobies, a Kansas City transit planner, in a 1996 white paper on the subject published by the Transportation Research Board."

Pedestrian Crushes Car - TV Tropes - 0 views

  •
"In real life, when a pedestrian is hit by a car, they suffer physical trauma; as a result, automobiles cause more deaths than any other machine on the planet. While that statistic still applies to drivers, you can expect a number of pedestrians in fiction to hold their own. A martial artist may punch through a door without breaking their hand, and if a super hero can stop a locomotive by standing in front of it, don't expect a lighter vehicle to survive. Motorcycles? Not a chance. Automobiles? Straight to the junkyard. Aircraft? Not if there's a flying brick. Metal siding crumples like tinfoil, engines get tossed aside, frames crumple, and passengers will be stunned. This trope is occasionally also used as a gag to show just how monstrously fat a character is. This is generally not Truth in Television unless the pedestrian in question is quite large, like, say… an elephant (other animals, such as moose and deer, have a history of achieving a Mutual Kill when encountering cars). Often requires Nigh-Invulnerability for straight examples or The Alleged Car for comedy. The vehicle in question may have a recognizable Impact Silhouette left behind. Overlaps with Trainstopping, which is more about stopping a train than damaging it. Contrast with Car Fu and Toyota Tripwire. See also Chronically Crashed Car. "

"Brasília, Brazil has adopted an important measure to improve women's safety on public transport. As of June this year, women can request to get off buses anywhere along a route after 10pm - including areas that are not traditional bus stops. Buses are required to meet this request and display information to make users aware of this right."

The Paris Metro has a surprisingly great Instagram | The Verge - 0 views

"Intrigued, I conducted a quick audit of the RATP's Instagram game, and determined that it is strong. Some images evoked the same sort of desolation I felt looking at that first photo - solitary figures at the end of a long walkway, the hulking, coppered tunnel at the Arts et Métiers stop. But others were more joyous, more dynamic. A man in a white bunny mask jumping in front of a metro entrance; an overhead shot of blurred commuters."

Self-Driving Cars Could Revolutionize Our Sidewalks, Too | Co.Design | business + design - 0 views

"Freeing parking spots would be a big boon to open real estate in urban areas. There are an estimated one billion parking spots in the U.S., for only a quarter billion cars. That's a 4:1 ratio of supply to demand, which makes little sense for a world where cars can drive around the block, network to a central database, and park themselves in an open spot-especially if they, like taxis of today, might only stop to refuel anyway."

Subway Map Plots New York's Best Coffee Shops - PSFK - 0 views

  •
"The map looks like a subway map and shows the best places to have coffee near each subway station. According to a blog by Butterfruit Labs founder Nirmal Banerjee, the locations were chosen based on factors like stop proximity, type of beans, equipment, and customer reviews. If there were multiple stores, the original or most popular location of that store chain was selected, and if some areas didn't have great options, Starbucks or Dunkin Donuts were chosen."

Mobile Town Square Pops Up In North West London - The Pop-Up City - 0 views

  •
"icklewood, a community in North West London, has no town hall, no library, no town square, not even a single bench. Last month, a mobile town square on wheels finally changed this and gave the town the public space they deserved. Curated by London-based civic ideas agency Spacemakers and designed by Studio Kieren Jones the Cricklewood Town Square comes to life in the shape of a miniature clock tower, which is attached to the back of a bicycle. Whenever it stops it transforms empty spaces into vibrant community events."

'I leave the car at home': how free buses are revolutionising one French city | Cities ... - 0 views

  •
"One month after the French channel port of Dunkirk introduced free public transport for all, a small revolution is taking place. Two women, perfect strangers until now, are chatting across the aisle about nothing in particular. One admits she sometimes takes the bus "just for the fun of it". A young man wearing headphones is charging his mobile in a socket just above the "request stop" button. On another bus, Claude Pointart, 65, who is retired, says free buses mean her pension goes further. "I'm saving money and they come every 10 minutes so I don't have to wait long. But there's a lot more people taking the bus so you have to avoid the rush hour if you want to sit. Still, I think it's a good thing.""

Desire paths: the illicit trails that defy the urban planners | Cities | The Guardian - 0 views

  •
"e've all been there. You want a short cut - to the bus stop, office or corner shop - but there's no designated path. Others before you have already flattened the grass, or cut a line through a hedge. Why not, you think. So goes the logic of "desire paths" - described by Robert Macfarlane as "paths & tracks made over time by the wishes & feet of walkers, especially those paths that run contrary to design or planning"; he calls them "free-will ways". The New Yorker offers other names: "cow paths, pirate paths, social trails, kemonomichi (beast trails), chemins de l'âne (donkey paths), and Olifantenpad (elephant trails)". JM Barrie described them as "Paths that have Made Themselves"."
