BUG: SEARCH RESULTS - Private Bookmarks Dropped From Search Results - 96 views

I thought that was Maggie? I've seen her posting on lifehacker a bit recently, but there hasn't been anyone around here. They used to be very fast at responding to every post here. (maybe too much).
@robert:
I've tried doing tag searches for a few of my tags and the number of results reported seems to match up with the number of tagged pages. I've only tried a few though.

I was thinking about how to make it easier to quickly tag bookmarks, and this is what i came up with:
http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o208/soulgrind_bucket/random/diigoadd.jpg
First of all it'd be useful to have a "as last bookmark" button for when you are tagging a load of pages one after the other that are all similar.
Next it'd be good to get recommendations not just based on the page, but based on your search queries* (if they are in the page) and the tags you use most often.
*if i've searched for "free activities tokyo" then its probably a good way to tag it, as i'll probably search for it that way again. But we need to check if those words are in the page, as tabbed browsing might mean the search is for another tab.
Also, if i'm adding it to a list (or group) then suggesting tags from that list/group would make sense. There should be a checkbox to automatically add all the tags for the list/group. This checkbox should remember it's setting.
Finally, move the "private" checkbox down by the "save" button, and then there's a small chance i might actually remember to use it correctly from time to time. -
Additionally, have the following settings:
Defaults:
Bookmarks: (_)private
Quick Bookmarks: (_)private (_)add search keywords as tags*
Unread: (_)private (_) add search keywords as tags
to allow different settings for privacy, etc.. for different kinds of bookmarks.
*but only if in the page
Questions about diigo from a newbie about search and recommended tag - 100 views

All searches are not equal in Diigo. Some searches are tag searches, and some are full text searches.
The UI is a little confusing at times about what you are searching. :-(
A: If you have the diigo SIDEbar open then you have three little links above the searchbox. The first is a tag search (with autocomplete) and the last is a full text search (without autocomplete).
B: If you are searching from the toolbar then its the full text search, without autocomplete.
(though the search is customisable, so you might be able to set up a tag search).
C: If you are searching from the diigo site then on the "My Bookmarks" page its a tag search (with autocomplete) . If you use the search engine in the top corner then its a full text search (without autocomplete).
(if you use the full text search then its not smart, it doesn't order the results in a sensible way, and doesn't notice if your search directly matches a tag. I'd stick with tag searches where possible).
---
For adding bookmarks, typing in tags into the text box SHOULD bring up autocomplete lists for existing tags. It does for me and it works fine.
The recommended tags? They are sometimes really useful, and sometimes terrible. I have no idea where they come from...
Hope that helps... -
It sure seems to for me. if i search for a common word then i get lots of results, which aren't included in the tags, title or description. So i guess it must be searching the cached versions.
I don't know if it generates the cached copies immediately though, there might be some delay after adding a bookmark.

I'm not too bothered about it, but it'd definitely be nice if ReadItLater bookmarks defaulted to private, but we could keep "real" bookmarks defaulted to public. Just for convenience.
I also think that it'd be convenient to have bookmarks "inherit" properties from groups or lists... or at least gain suggested properties from them.
If a list has tags then i probably want to add those tags to every item i add to the list. Maybe the same for groups (though i don't use groups much). At the very least it'd be useful, when i select a list, to offer the list's tags as suggestions, or offer a "add list tags" checkbox. And maybe a prompt for privacy settings too.
"this group/list is private, do you want to make the bookmark private? Y/N"

I just typed a search for "book" into the diigo toolbar, and i got back 67 results, the majority of which have nothing to do with Books.
I do actually have a Tag named "book", with about 4 items tagged, so i kind of expected them to be near the top.. but they weren't in the top 50.
The site i was looking for was called Bookfinder.com. So it has "book" in it's URL, in it's page title, and in numerous places on the page.
The sites i got first maybe did have the odd occurrence of the word "book" in advertising or links, but the pages weren't tagged "book" or related to books.
So it was actually easier and faster to find bookfinder using google than the diigo search.. that can't be right!
--
I don't know how its ranked right now, but can i suggest that exact tag matches (or plurals) should get the number one position, followed by words in notes/highlights, followed by page titles/urls, and then finally by the full text search?
FYI: Search result 1 had 3 occurrences of "book" in the text only, #2 had 5 occurrences in the txt only, the one i wanted had 27 occurrences in the text, plus url, title and tags. -
on further checking, it seems like the results were just returned in the order they were added to diigo, with the newest ones first (if they contained the keyword anywhere).
Doesn't seem like the most useful way to order search results.
[edit]
Oh, and i was talking about searching from the toolbar, or on the diigo site (or diigo & google).
I never use the sidebar, as its faster to type in the toolbar, but i just tried the "tag" search in the sidebar, and that brings back just the 4 results i'd need. but the "search" search in the sidebar brings back loads of results (not in itself a problem, but it doesn't float those 4 to near the top).
As a side note, having tag suggestions in the sidebar searchbox is really cool! any chance of getting those in the toolbar searchbox?

Agreed on both features.
Sorting by frequency of use for tag suggestions would be VERY time-saving
Pressing enter to select tags is problematic because occasionally there is a delay in the interface (for whatever reason) and several times i've ended up accidentally submitting a half tagged bookmark by pressing enter to select a tag, but its ended up submitting the bookmark instead.
middle click?? - 113 views
-
I've asked half a dozen times before, over the last 6-12 months, but can we please get some sensible mouse handling options on the toolbar?
Surely it can't be hard to add (consistently) the option to middle click things to open them in new tabs??
I really like the new Filters on the toolbar... but in order to open one I have to "right click on my toolbar" "choose new tab" and then click on the item in the list. Why can't i just middle click it to get it in a new tab like everything else in FF?
Plus I always forget, so i end up overwriting my current tab (often losing whatever i had in that tab) and then have to click the back button to get it back.
Other than that, great job.. keep it up... - ...3 more comments...

I have no "Diigo and Google" option in any of my diigo search options.
Tried clicking on "customise" but it isn't available in there either. I guess i might be able to get it by resetting all my defaults, but i've got my search set up as i like it, and i don't want to have to re-enter every search engine.
Is there a URL i can use to add it manually?
I followed the link in Graham's note, and i got his results page. If i use that page to search for something i have in my bookmarks then it works well.
However I think it'd be better to have a Google Extra style layout, as the current Diigo & Google doesn't make great use of space.. i only get a few diigo results, and then lots of google ones. If they were side by side then i could get more diigo results. (also, i end up stuck with saesearch "on" and using google.com results rather than .co.uk). Still, its a fair start.

@Graham:
Middle click is the standard in most tabbed software to open and close things in new tabs. I don't think its windows only, though i haven't used a mac for a while. In most software (firefox, mozilla, etc..) you can set up the options for control-click and alt-click to mimic a middle click. I've just tried it and in FF control-click seems to mostly have the same effect.. at least in my setup.
Afaik middle click works in Firefox, Opera, IE7, Visual Studio, etc.. on windows, and usually on linux too. I'd imagine it works on OSX if you plug in a mouse with a mousewheel.
It wasn't really an EXTRA feature i wanted specific to Diigo, I just wanted diigo's usability to be the same as the rest of the browser, because having middle click work on some menus, but not on others was rather confusing. Now its all consistent. :-) -
Nope, i definitely don't have it. I use the right click "search" functionality of diigo all the time, but i don't remember ever having a "diigo and web" option. Maybe i accidentally deleted it when i customised my other search engines. I do have "diigo" and "google" options of course... but no combined one.
I've never had any issues with the right click menu not appearing. Or do you mean the pop up menu diigo automatically displays when you highlight things? I disabled that ages ago, so i wouldn't know how that works... i tend to just highlight things, right click, and then choose from "highlight, bookmark and highligh, or Search Bookmarks"
Try squeezing on a tab and see if it closes it. try sueezing on your bookmarks and see if they open in new tabs. I couldn't live without middle click these days, i tend to go through a page and middle click any interesting links, and then go through all the tabs and see what there is. Hardly ever use the back button these days ;-)
As for your PC mouse question. I'd say most PC mice have only 2 buttons and a scroll wheel (which makes button 3 - middle click). Though of course there are so many different models of USB mouse out there. My old one used to have five buttons. My current one has a scroll wheel that can also be tilted left and right, so i gues thats two extra buttons... but left right and middle is the standard (but can be tricky on touchpads, hence the control-click option)
I think that "fourth click/squeeze" is a mac only feature, as afaik the mighty mouse is the only one with that function, as it doesn't have a scroll wheel...
Hiding real name or at least using nickname under avatars - 90 views

+1 for this.
Having so many real names on the diigo forums really ISN'T good for protecting people's identities!
Screen Names would be a much better idea.

idea: get tags/recommended tags from lists - 41 views
-
Two connected ideas that'd be useful to me:
1) Recommended tag suggestions from lists. (or even groups)
I've added tags to my lists, but i'm not quite sure what use they have. But it seems to me that if i'm adding an item to a list, and that list has tags, then those might be suitable for items in that list.
I'd imagine that when you select a list from the dropdown it'd pop up another list of recommended tags, based on that list's tags. *
2) Automatically add list tags to bookmarks.
Maybe more extreme, but it'd be fine for me. If i add an item to a list then i'd be quite happy if ALL the tags from that list were automatically added to that bookmark.
I tend to find that a lot of my bookmarks fall into 3 or 4 distinct categories, and i'm adding the same 7 or 8 tags to each bookmark in a category. Even with autocomplete it seems a little inefficient. Being able to use lists to quickly add common groups of tags would be useful.
*maybe with a "add all list tags" option too.
idea: "like last bookmark" button - 72 views

I've just been adding a number of bookmarks, all of which are very similar topics, so using very similar tags and options. But every time i add one i have to type in all the tags and select the list, and other options.
(well, actually i soon figured out to copy and past the list of tags)
So, I was wondering, how about a little button on the "add bookmark" popup that repeats all the options, tags, etc.. of the last bookmark?
That way, if i'm adding a load of similar bookmarks at the same time (a likely scenario i'd think) I coudl just:
Click "add bookmark", click "as last bookmark", (optionally make any changes), and click "submit".
Just a thought.
option to open searches in new tabs PLEASE??? - 50 views
-
I have the diigo toolbar installed, and as i build up a nice list of diigo bookmarks it'd be really useful to be able to search it easily.. but everything in my FF is set to open in new tabs. (searches, URLs, etc..) so every time i'm reading a page and I want to search for something in the text box i go ahead... ONLY TO GET MY CURRENT TAB OVERWRITTEN...
which is REALLY frustrating.. especially if i was half way through typing something and wanted to look up a reference. I can't even CTRL enter or ALT enter or anything to open the results in a new tab...
please...

but it still takes up an entire row, even if it only has one button.
though I guess it must be possible to install the toolbar, but disable it entirely and only use the right click menu... though I haven't tried it.
I like, and use, the diigo toolbar. But with every site out there offering a toolbar that takes up a whole row, many people are VERY picky about what toolbars they'll install. Thats why, in many ways, I prefer extensions over toolbars, ones that install themselves unobtrusively in a corner and don't take up much space.
I keep the diigo one on because I like the search box, the highlighting and the unread options. But its still more than 50% empty...

Showing 20▼ items per page
I asked a few months back, but it's still fairly useless at the moment.
For example, searching for "books" returns 77 results, almost all of which have NOTHING to do with books, but happen to have adverts for books on the web page.
However it doesn't return some of the pages i tagged as "book" or "books".
Doing a tag search is a little better, but it doesn't differentiate between singular or plural nouns.. so searching for "books" returns only the one result i tagged "books" and not the 3 i tagged "book"
Plus, the tag search isn't the one used in the toolbar or the diigo+google search.
WIthout a useful search it sometimes feels like i'm wasting time adding all these pages and tags...
