Integration with the FF3 Star - 59 views

Is there an option to integrate Diigo with the star used to bookmark sites in FF3? Its a funky new feature and it always looks so tempting to click it!
(to be honest i mostly highlight and use right click, but still, it'd be nice)

Alternatively, I've noticed that the Read It later extension added a small grey tick next to the star. Maybe diigo could have an option to add a small icon,

Just a thought. Keep up the good work.

Q: Highlighting and privacy? - 198 views

highlight highlighting privacy private question bug regression

I was using diigo purely as a bookmarker, but i've recently discovered how useful the highlighting is (in particular with regard to notes to access from a mobile).

However I'm wondering about the privacy settings. When I highlight something it says "private highlight by soulgrind r", but even if i'm not logged in, those highlights show up under the "expand" link on my user page. That seems confusing to me, as they aren't really private (though i guess it refers to actually seeing the highlights "in page". )

Also, I'd like the default setting of HIGHLIGHTS (as opposed to bookmarks) to be private. If I bookmark a page, and tag it, etc.. then I probably am happy for it to be public (or at least I have the option to choose).

If I highlight something then its often just a reminder, or a quick bit of temporary information for me (how it get to a place, how to beat a level in a game, etc..).
So, ideally, I'd like to be able to set the default privacy for Bookmarks (tagged), Quick Bookmarks, AND Highlights (no_tag).

If I decide to tag it later then I'll probably make it a pubic bookmark, and its probably worth sharing.. but if it's "no_tag" then its probably not worth sharing (at least not yet).

PS/ Glad all your guys in china are ok.

FR: Take plurals into account when tagging/searching tags - 62 views

annoying feature features plurals request search useful

I was just searching for a site that I was pretty sure I'd tagged, a photography site. But I searched for "photo" and "image" and it didn't come up. Finally I found it and discovered I'd tagged it with "photos" and "images".

It'd be really nice if diigo could smartly handle plurals in tags. Looking at my tag list I've already got lots of duplicate tags book/books, photo/photos, snippet/snippets.

I do my best to avoid them, but it often depends on the context of the page. A directory of code snippets is much more likely to get tagged "snippets", whereas if i find a page with a single cool snippet its much more likely to get tagged "snippet". Same goes for everything else.

I don't mind, too much, having the separate tags, though it does make it hard to navigate by tag cloud, etc.. but it'd be nice if at least the search was able to handle them and show both.

FR: Sidebar links have "edit" link - 66 views

feature request sidebar sometime useful

When I search in the sidebar it brings up a list of links, which I can click on to visit the site. This is great.
But it'd also be nice if there was a little "edit" or "edit icon" after each link so i could get to it on diigo.

Usage example: I just searched for a tag and got a list in the sidebar, but I realised one site shouldn't be there and wanted to remove that tag. However there was no direct way to edit the bookmark from the sidebar, so I had to open the page, then use the toolbar to edit it.
  • Soul Book

not too often. Only if i realise i've made a mistake.

Its not a hugely important feature for me. (and I've just realised I can click on the "my bookmarks" link under the toolbar to get the list on diigo, then edit it from there)

However, I don't think there would be any problem with adding a tiny edit icon to take you to the bookmark on diigo. Just a thought.

I don't suppose by any chance there is a mobile version of diigo is there? I couldn't see a link.. but services don't always make them easy to find.

Its not something I'm dying for, but there are a few occasions where it'd be quite nice to be able to access my highlights from my mobile.

    Eg:
I bookmark a local cinema and highlight the directions and phone number.
I highlight some info about something I'm studying (japanese verbs) and want to read it while i'm on the train.
I highlight a game walkthrough and want to check it when i get stuck playing Metroid Hunters on the DS.

I'd guess you could also provide links from the bookmarks to google mobilized versions of the pages (and maybe even the originals as more and more people get decent 3g web phones).

I wonder if the sidebar would work as a lightweight mobile version??
  • Soul Book

Excellent.. just as i imagined it!
Was there a link somewhere to it that i missed, or is it still unofficial?

I'll try it out on my phone tomorrow. Only thing i might suggest, from a 2 second glance, is links to something like the Google Mobile Optimizer to shrink the original pages for phone viewing.

    Thanks! Diigo keeps getting better!

It hasnt worked since the v3 update.

I mentioned it back then, but its not a huge issue for me so I haven't chased up on it. It would be useful though, especially as about 70% of the toolbar is a waste of space at the moment.

it means it must be something you own the rights to. A cartoon or picture you took yourself would be fine.

It seems a little strict, as very few companies have a problem with their copyrights being used as forum avatars.. infact a lot of companies give away promotional avatars and other stuff to advertise products.

I'd imagine diigo is just covering it' back.. so as long as u are sensible it should be fine. I think its 48x48 or a ratio of 1:1.

Just a suggestion, and I don't think it'll work for private bookmarks, but you could try subscribing to the tag you want using firefox's live bookmarks feature.

Put that Live Bookmark on your bookmarks toolbar and you can click it to see a list of all bookmarks with that tag, and use it to open them all.

Of course, you'd probably only want to o this with 1 or 2 tags, but it might do what you want.

Its not easy to access your unread bookmarks there anyway. ;-)

I'd much rather have the unread bookmarks as a button on the toolbar (with a total beside it and a drop down menu. It'd be much faster to access. )

To be honest I didn't even notice that diigo had been aded to the menu bar... but it seems weird to have the useful functions divided between the toolbar and the menu bar. Either put them all in one or the other (or allow them all to appear in one, the other or both based on user choice.).

    Eg: Message(0) | Unread (12) | Watchlist (2) | Recommended (7) | Recent | Lists | Groups

Just ideas to make it better!
I love the new toolbar and site BTW, thanks very much!

Diigo Search Bar Opens New Tab - 162 views

  • Soul Book

I've been begging diigo to do this for months, as it made the search unusable for me before. So i'm realy happy about the change. However I do think that it should be an option.

I also wish that the "diigo" dropdown menu would open in a new tab, as the inconsistency is confusing. (again as an option). Its really annoying when i'm reading a page and I want to search for something or check something on diigo and it overwrites what i'm reading. So i have to press the back button. Open a new tab, and then try it again.

I'd also be satisfied if middle clicks were supported. the standard behaviour for almost all of firefox is to open left clicks in the current tab and middle clicks in a new tab. (or at least thats how i have mine set up, and diigo should us the current user's settings).

Sorry Rachel.... I guess its my fault... ;-)
  • Soul Book

I totally agree about the option/or allowing middle click instead.

I know its a real pain to have to switch surfing habits once you get used to them (thats why i had to dumo the diigo search when it DIDN'T open in a new tab ;-) )

Being hypocritical for a moment, I'd suggest giving it a try and seeing if you can get used to it. I'm usually searching for something I found or was reminded of on the current page, so I don't want to have the current page disappear when I search for a new item. Then I can continue reading the article, and later look at the search results, or just middle click the current tab to close it and go to the results.
(i have the firefox search box set to open in new background tabs too... but then I do often have dozens of tabs open at a time.)

I'd suggest giving it a try, at least until it gets an option.

    Rachel wrote:
    > Hmmm, that's really a bummer that they didn't make it an option right away instead of simply changing the default behavior - wouldn't have even minded if the new behavior was the default if they gave the option to change it back. I'll just dump the search feature and go back to the built in browser search until they address this.
    >
    > Thanks for responding, though. :) I appreciate you taking the time to do so.

Its very inconsistent across the toolbar. For me:

1A- Anything in the Toolbar Search menu opens in a new tab on left click
1B-Anything in the Right click search menu opens in a new tab on left click OR right click.
1C-The default toolbar search DOESNT respond to middle clicks, but the ones in the drop down menu do.

2-Things in the Diigo Menu (in the file menu) seem to respond correctly to left and middle clicks (ie: left=this tab, middle=new tab)

3-Things in the Diigo meno (on the toolbar) are really random. they open in the current tab on left clicks, but you can't middle click on most of them to open in a new tab. (Mygroups and Invite friends seem to respond to middle clicks, the others don't.)

All in all its pretty confusing as i never really know what is gonna open where.
I'd suggest it should be, for everything, left click=current tab, middle click=new tab.
    (or make them menu options.)

This would mean changing the left click behaviour of the search menus, and the middle click behaviours of the Diigo (toolbar) dropdown menu and the default toolbar search button (bookmarks>)

Ah... that might be why FF2 keeps popping up a "change your password" confirmation box for me.
Simpy started working a few das back, but i only got delicious working last night. I think it might be to do with firefox rewriting the password that is submitted.

(i have the same username for delicious as diigo, but not for simpy. )

It seems to have changed it for delicious now, so it works... but i wonder if it means it wont work next time it tries to log into diigo??

delicious and simpy bookmarking wasnt working for me yesterday. then simpy started working but delicious didn't. can't get to the options page right now. 500 error.

I generally prefer the new toolbar over the old one.. but i think it would be good to have a bookmark icon as well as a quickD icon. Maybe make them link together to form 2 parts of the same icon? eg: CD

I understand why the diigo button was confusing... although ight now you have a few UI inconsistencies.
For all the other buttons the down arrow is a separate button, for the diigo button its the same button.
Searches open in new tabs (Thank you!) but men options still overwrite your current tab, and you can't right click.

If i might suggest, how about putting quick links to the most common search terms under the search box in the sidebar?
Though generally, I think it'd be really useful to be able to sort links by frequency of USE.. and have my most use ones there at the top when I open the sidebar. (spurl used to do this and it rocked. The spurl sidebar is still the best bookmarking sidebar imho... shame the site died.)

New Toolbar coming sometime? (plus ideas) - 38 views

diigo idea toolbar tab suggestion
started by Soul Book on 19 Mar 08 no follow-up yet

I never come here, so apologies if this is something well known to everyone else. I've been using diigo for a year or so now (almost all from the toolbar) and its great. However I cant remember any new features or upgrades appearing. (i guess maybe movie clipping, but I never use that). I seem to vaguely remember that about 6-12 months ago when i was on these forums there was talk of toolbar beta testing... but i haven't heard of any update.

I really like diigo, but it'd be great to see a few new features.. after a few web2.0 sites failing on me (spurl, zooomr (effectively), etc..) I start to get a bit nervous when there aren't any updates for so long. Plus, a lot of other cool sites have appeared in the meantime.

Anyway, I don't want diigo to become totally bloated, but here are a few suggestions that'd really make things better for me.

    General:
1-Ignore plurals. (so that if i tag things "book" and "books" I don't end up with 2 tags.
2-Sort by frequency of use (so that my daily used bookmarks "float to the top").
3-Favorites (starred items of whatever, which get priority in searches, ordering, etc..)
4-Really good antispam, cos thats whats killed a lot of other sites, but i'm sure you know that.
5-Prettier interface, more like magnolia. (diigo has way better functionality, but pretty interfaces get all the press coverage)

    Toolbar:
(in general, more buttons directly on the toolbar, less options hidden in dropdowns)

1-Filters/Tags/Lists directly on the toolbar. (kinda like live bookmarks).
In particular, 1-click access to: most used, most recent, unread. Plus user definable tags/lists/groups.

    2-Mark read from toolbar.
This goes with 1. If there is quick access to my unread items then there should be a quick way to mark them read. (i currently have to use the Read it later firefox extenstion, but that doesn't integrate with diigo. )

    3-tag autocomplete from search box.
Ideally i could use the search box to enter tags, then press "Diigo" or "QuickD" to bookmark the page. (though this might make QuickD redundant, except as a way to mark it unread rather than read. )

4-Some of the search options direct on the toolbar.
In theory the diigo search options are great.. very customisable and for lots of sites. But i never remember to use them cos they are all hidden in a nested tree. If i could have "Web", "Bookmarks", "Blogs", "News", "more.." as direct buttons (with drop downs into the categories, and with me choosing which ones to show then i'd use it a lot more.

5-Highlighted text as bookmark comment. If I highlight some text before pressing "diigo" then put it in the comment box. Put a clear button incase i didn't mean to do it.

    6-Integrated search results.
If i do a google or other search (from the diigo toolbar OR the firefox search box) that has matching pages in diigo then put a little box on the right of the google search results with links to those pages.

    7-Favicons
Both on the toolbar and on the site.

8-BUT MOST IMPORTANT (almost forgot) = make middle click work right in firefox.
In all my other toolbars middle clicking opens results in a new tab (in the background for me, but that depends on the user's preferences). But on the diigo toolbar it overwrites my current tab. very annoying at times.

    Additional:
Another idea I had that seemed like it'd fit great with diigo is Change Notifications.
I used to use changenotes.com for this (though only very occasionally), but recently i've wanted to monitor a few pages for changes and it seems to be so slow as to be unusable. There are a few other services out there that do it, but since diigo is already bookmarking, caching and highlighting the pages it seems like it'd be a pretty fitting addition to allow you to get updates (email, rss feed or on toobar) when the page (or only the content you have highlighted) changes.
AFAIK no other bookmarking site has change notices, but it seems like a great fit for social bookmarking. It'd only be an option, not for every bookmark/highlight.

    lotsa thanks, tom

PS/ want any beta testers for the new toolbar, if there is one?

toolbar: open in new tab & private quickD - 19 views

Few easy ideas to improve the toolbar:

1 - It'd be good if the menu options opened in a new tab.
In almost every other extension and toolbar, if i choose something like "feedback" it'd open in a new tab. With diigo it overwrites my current tab... very annoying. So I have to remember to open a new tab, click on it, and then click on the diigo menu options.

2 - Be nice to have an option to open bookmarks in a new tab by default as well.

3 - the option to make quickD bookmarks private by default. (but keep other bookmarks pubic by default).
If i'm just quicky tagging something to look at later, i probably don't need it made public.

Plus of course... favicons and the option to sort bookmarks by alpha and by frequency of use.

case-sensitive tags - any chance of it happening? - 383 views

discussion tag case CamelCase case-sensitive help suggestion
  • Soul Book

i definately wouldn't want case sensitivity to cause different tags.. eg: "Tech" and "tech".. that would be very annoying.. as for case display, I guess that would be ok... but it'd probably make my tags look much more messy and confusing..

I'd probably capitalise some tags, but forget on others, and to the TYpo thing of capitalising 2 letters accidentally.

I think that merging singles and plurals would be a much more useful addition. Eg: "game" and "games" would both be merged into the same tag automatically.
  • Soul Book

*skipping to the end of the thread*

I'd like to vote against case sensitive tagging. Several other services i used had it, and people were asking for it to be removed. Ideally I'd like everything reduced to lower case, so its consistent.. and if possible plurals to be ignored too.

With case sensitive tags its too easy to end up with loads of similar tags that you really wanted to be all the same thing. eg: Book, book, BOok (typo), Books, books, BOoks, etc..

keeping things simple, single case, and having book = books makes autocomplete work faster, and makes all your tags more organised. (half the reason delicious needs tag bundles is do deal with the problems of duplicate tags.
  • Soul Book

    awesome!

Can you do the same for plurals? ;-)
