Diigo Search Bar Opens New Tab - 162 views

    Hi,

I've been using Diigo (and loving it!) for a looooong time now and find it indispensable. I'm getting familiar with the new features and for the most part, I love V3.

However, there's a different behavior now with the integrated search bar and I can't figure out how to change it or if it's a bug. Every time I search, instead of opening the search as it always has in the current tab, it now opens a new one. So in a matter of a couple of searches I have several additional tabs open which I didn't want. Is there any way to change this or address this issue? It's the only thing so far that I dislike.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hi,

I think it is not a bug. I don't want to move from original page when I search.
For example: When I'm writing in a page and I want to search, my input contents is cleared by search.

But I can understand your opinion, too. I hope we can select them.

I've been begging diigo to do this for months, as it made the search unusable for me before. So i'm realy happy about the change. However I do think that it should be an option.

I also wish that the "diigo" dropdown menu would open in a new tab, as the inconsistency is confusing. (again as an option). Its really annoying when i'm reading a page and I want to search for something or check something on diigo and it overwrites what i'm reading. So i have to press the back button. Open a new tab, and then try it again.

I'd also be satisfied if middle clicks were supported. the standard behaviour for almost all of firefox is to open left clicks in the current tab and middle clicks in a new tab. (or at least thats how i have mine set up, and diigo should us the current user's settings).

Sorry Rachel.... I guess its my fault... ;-)

Hmmm, that's really a bummer that they didn't make it an option right away instead of simply changing the default behavior - wouldn't have even minded if the new behavior was the default if they gave the option to change it back. I'll just dump the search feature and go back to the built in browser search until they address this.

Thanks for responding, though. :) I appreciate you taking the time to do so.

I totally agree about the option/or allowing middle click instead.

I know its a real pain to have to switch surfing habits once you get used to them (thats why i had to dumo the diigo search when it DIDN'T open in a new tab ;-) )

Being hypocritical for a moment, I'd suggest giving it a try and seeing if you can get used to it. I'm usually searching for something I found or was reminded of on the current page, so I don't want to have the current page disappear when I search for a new item. Then I can continue reading the article, and later look at the search results, or just middle click the current tab to close it and go to the results.
(i have the firefox search box set to open in new background tabs too... but then I do often have dozens of tabs open at a time.)

I'd suggest giving it a try, at least until it gets an option.

open up in new tab with middle click or ctrl-click --- is this not working for you? it is for me

Its very inconsistent across the toolbar. For me:

1A- Anything in the Toolbar Search menu opens in a new tab on left click
1B-Anything in the Right click search menu opens in a new tab on left click OR right click.
1C-The default toolbar search DOESNT respond to middle clicks, but the ones in the drop down menu do.

2-Things in the Diigo Menu (in the file menu) seem to respond correctly to left and middle clicks (ie: left=this tab, middle=new tab)

3-Things in the Diigo meno (on the toolbar) are really random. they open in the current tab on left clicks, but you can't middle click on most of them to open in a new tab. (Mygroups and Invite friends seem to respond to middle clicks, the others don't.)

All in all its pretty confusing as i never really know what is gonna open where.
I'd suggest it should be, for everything, left click=current tab, middle click=new tab.
    (or make them menu options.)

This would mean changing the left click behaviour of the search menus, and the middle click behaviours of the Diigo (toolbar) dropdown menu and the default toolbar search button (bookmarks>)

I agree with you that the left click for same tab opening/middle click for new tab would be great - or making it custom a menu option would be fine as well. To be honest, I couldn't deal with it any more and finally removed the Diigo search tool. I really loved it and do miss it, but at this point, the standard Firefox search bar is working far better for me than the "new improved" Diigo search. Sad really. I hope that they fix the behavior to make it more consistent and add the new options but until then, I can live with what I'm using.
