@ dDimdii mmm
My guess at the moment is that the problem is with Diigo About, which seems to present as public the highlights which are described elsewhere as private.
Diigo Toolbar 3.1.6.13 added to Firefox 3.0.9 is comparable to Diigolet 3.1b523 when viewing http://mpt.net.nz/archive/2008/08/01/free-software-usability ; I see none of the supposedly public annotations that others have made.
Postscript
It's not usual to report a privacy concern in public, but it wasn't until comment #2 above that I realised the privacy implication and by then, the main observation was in the open.

We have more recent version 3.1.6.13 at
http://www.diigo.com/tools
I guess you gained the add-on from
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2792
The presence of an outdated version at mozilla.org is a known issue. Sorry you were bugged by it.

Remotely: are you aiming your highlights at the original page, or at the Diigo cached copy?
Locally: try clearing all caches that may affect the Firefox browsing experience, then restart Windows XP.
If the symptom persists and if you wish to reduce the bug, I suggest:
1. temporarily disable Diigo 3.1.6.13
2. try Diigolet 3.1b506 in Firefox 3.0.5.
If no improvement in Firefox, then try Diigolet in non-Gecko rendering engines:
3. Diigolet in WebKit (Safari, or Chrome beta)
4. Diigolet in Internet Explorer.

@ Diigo
Do we have issues with vertical line, Unicode 007C (UTF 7C) in URLs?

@ Claude
Whilst I don't know Ruby on Rails, I do know that in groups.diigo.com fora we have problems with misrepresentation of URLs.
For example the hyper-link presented for
http://www.letemps.ch/Page/Uuid/e5d2858a-eb0d-11dd-b87c-1c3fffea55dc|0
may omit the vertical line and everything beyond.

http://www.diigo.com/04olz is intended to show my highlights and my inline comments.
I realised that anonymous viewers of the annotated link saw only my highlights:
* my group-shared sticky notes were not presented.
In an effort to correct the missing aspects of the annotated link I
deleted the bookmark from My Bookmarks,
revisited the page,
presented Diigolet,
recreated the bookmark,
visited My Bookmarks to re-gain the annotated link.
The annotated link is as before,
http://www.diigo.com/04olz
and now it is
* missing all my highlights
* missing all my sticky notes.

When I bookmark such pages (by coincidence,
http://www.qualitysalvage.net/ on 20th January) I visit My Bookmarks and use the 'Add a bookmark' field.
http://www.diigo.com/post is equivalent.
I might then use the My Bookmarks interface to add page comments, but considering the framed nature of the content I do not aim to use highlights.

lead to a few discussions not all of which relate to ReadItLater a.k.a. Read It Later for Firefox
(Not to be confused with the Read Later feature that was (re)introduced to versions 3.1.6.11 .12 and .13 of Diigo Toolbar for Firefox,

Re: RSS, http://www.diigo.com/04nk7 reference to PostRank/AideRSS may be of interest.
If http://www.diigo.com/user/bluegene?tab=1 is (to you) your tab of unread bookmarks, then would a feed to match that collection be of interest?
(Current Diigo behaviour is for the feed from the Unread subset to produce the My Bookmarks superset.)

Subject: official site for Read It Later separated from support area in another domain (confusion)
http://lifehacker.com/5070735/read-it-later-integrates-with-google-reader-non+firefox-browsers refers to
http://readitlaterlist.com/
Firefox 3.0.5 | Tools | Add-ons | Read it Later 0.9929 | Preferences | Help/Support refers to
http://www.ideashower.com/ideas/launched/read-it-later/ (does not refer to
http://readitlaterlist.com/ ).
http://readitlaterlist.com/ does not mention support but a Google search for shower
http://www.google.com/search?q=shower+site%3Areaditlaterlist.com discovers a support area
http://readitlaterlist.com/suggest that refers to
http://www.ideashower.com/ideas/launched/read-it-later/
Eventually,
http://www.ideashower.com/support/read-it-later/ presents plenty of references to Google Reader so I might figure out what's wrong.
(I have allowed Read It Later 0.9929 to
[√] Integrate into Google Reader
but what I mark (in Firefox) to read later does not appear in Google Reader.) -
Does the more recent topic how to configure google reader's "send to" feature for diigo? (August 2009) resolve this one from January?

but I guess that if your students (your friends) have messed with your laptop, regaining control may involved:
1) revoke the rights of each friend who has messed up your laptop
2) create a new account for each person whose previous account was revoked
3) close any classes or groups that your student friends have spoilt
4) recreate classes or groups to take the place of those that were spoilt.
Oh, I nearly forgot.
Make your student friends SIT IN SILENCE on the NAUGHTY CHAIR whilst they watch you put right everything that they spoilt ;)
