    I have two basic assumptions:

    1) about.diigo.com , groups.diigo.com , message.diigo.com , www.diigo.com
and other diigo.com ¿subdomains? do not necessarily share the
    same technologies/qualities

    2) bookmarks, annotations and tags are objects.

If the objects assumption is true: I don't know whether any/all such objects are contained within a database, or discrete in file systems.

ACLs (access control lists)? I have no idea.

My senses of acquisition and ineritance (not the same thing) are slanted by my very vague familiarity with ZODB. I occasionally glance at resources such as
    http://plone.org/documentation/glossary/acquisition
    http://wiki.zope.org/zope2/Acquisition
http://www.zope.org/Documentation/Books/ZopeBook/2_6Edition/Acquisition.stx but my use (of Plone) doesn't require me to actually *know* such things.

The slants and gaps in knowledge mean that my guesses could be completely wrong, but I do allow the guesses to stall me (believe it or not!) on a number of topics.

    Closing thoughts:

    * I do not encourage anyone else to share my guesses

    * I do not expect Diigo to confirm or correct any of what's above
(APIs should be more interesting) (other quiet priorities are appreciated)

    * rewinding to a November expression: to avoid disappointment,
at least for myself, I set no perceptions in stone.

Incidentally, I do not think of a list as a container ;)

I guess that you're already aware of Diigo Educator Accounts,
    http://blog.diigo.com/2008/09/19/announcing-diigo-educator-accounts/

    > share and annotate bookmarks which are categorised in
    > lists. We're using groups

Whilst Diigo groups don't have lists, you might populate group tag dictionaries e.g.
    http://groups.diigo.com/tag_mana/group_tag_dict?group_name=eatbath
    http://groups.diigo.com/tag_mana/group_tag_dict?group_name=edtechtalk
    http://groups.diigo.com/tag_mana/group_tag_dict?group_name=social-bookmarking-seminar-group
with multiple-word tags that match the names of your required lists. I see that one of the dictionaries is already populated :)

I understand that the notion of a group-specific list is appealing, and that tags are not a panacea, but please:

    * de-focusing for a moment from Diigo, and from computers generally, what end result(s) would you like your students to achieve?

Subject: scope/applicability of group tag dictionary

    Hi Roger

Apologies for a long answer. I suspect a mash in the pipeline but we (the community) might not mash it without some thinking out loud ...

    > I'm not sure that group tag dictionaries work with the Diigolet option.

    1) In Diigo 3.1.6.13 for Firefox: group tag dictionary entries make themselves obvious in some but not all types of Bookmark dialogue.

In the edit bookmark dialogue above, there's evidence of the share with a group, but that group's dictionary is not offered; some additional clicks are required (aim to share where the share already exists) before the entries appear.

    2) In Diigolet 3.1b506 we have neither dictionaries of, nor suggestions for, tags.

Concerning the absence of groups' dictionaries from Diigolet:
I might have seen/noted that as a suggestion
    http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/tag/suggestion
but I'm not a social tagger so I have paid little attention.

I'm fairly certain that amongst the suggestions/discussions, there is acknowledgement from Diigo that the groups.diigo.com interface to bookmarks might be improved. (My twopenneth: an excellent web interface should allow Diigolet to remain uncluttered and responsive.)

At the moment the 'More Actions…' menu is sparse and compared to 'My Bookmarks' there are fewer menus. Some of the absences are perfectly correct; a group is not an individual. If I find the relevant topic I might bump it or at least draw your attention.

    3) In Diigo groups fora: the tag dictionary is not applicable. The wish for this feature is acknowledged but in my own foraging through other groups' dictionaries (without privileges: the dictionaries can be viewed but not managed) I find very little evidence of groups bothering with tags.

    ---

    > many of our students use the Diigolet button as they are unable
    > currently to install the Diigo toolbar because of PCs on campus
    > being locked down.

I don't know whether you (or your colleague, who originated the enquiry) might apply the keyword 'enterprise' to your campus PC environment, I used the keyword as a tag just once http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/tag/enterprise -- in that area, I do still have a sketch in mind but it probably will not materialise for a few weeks. Maybe Diigo 4 will greet us first :)

    ---

All things considered it does seem most desirable, in your colleague's situation, to have group-defined lists.

However I have this gut feeling that we're overlooking something. Probably a feature, or feature combination (mmmmmassh) that's not leaping out at us. Yet ...

    Best,
    Graham

    Rewind :)

    > share a list with a group

    > view the bookmarks in the list

    > add new ones to that shared list

    > students share and annotate bookmarks which are categorised

For a moment, let's forget the word 'list', focus on 'categories'.

    1. Are the categories pre-defined by the teacher?

    2. Is each category a starting point/guidline for the student, and beyond that starting point do the students have fairly free rein whilst annotating?

For a moment, forget Diigo groups.

    3. Within the group (of students):

    a) are there sub-groups, one sub-group per category (of bookmarks)?

    or

    b) is the entire group studying/annotating all categories?

    ---

Now: think Diigo + blog, and categories within a blog.

    https://secure.diigo.com/blog_this/daily_blog
    https://secure.diigo.com/blog_this/config
    - any group member (including the teacher) can
produce, from the Diigo group, a draft within a blog.

Would the teacher find it acceptable to periodically review the group's activities, and to categorise, within the blog setting?

There's also the 'My Bookmarks' route to selecting and sending (drafting) to a blog.

    4. Should the categories that were predefined, near the beginning of a course/assignment, be overt in the end result?

    ======
    Moodle
    ======

AFAIK Diigo does support MetaWeblog API.

http://moodle.org/mod/forum/discuss.php?d=44172 concerns Moodle support for MetaWeblog but the answer to that point isn't given.

    (From your
    http://www.diigo.com/profile/gardnerr I guess Moodle.)

Does Moodle support group blog approaches?
(multiple user single blog) ... I wonder.

http://www.screencast-o-matic.com/watch/ciQqFygX involves Moodle and Diigo but probably not in the required context.

    @ Roger

Your three paragraphs in comment #10 should be ideal food for Diigo if/when they review features of Educator accounts.

With those paragraphs in mind, Scott's multiple groups approach (16th January comment #4 and today's #11) does seem to be the best workaround.

    @ Scott

Thanks for the detailed second suggestion :)

    Cheers

Manually sorting of lists - 88 views

lists sorting help suggestion search

    Hi Richard

    I find the opposite;

    * 'My Bookmarks' is a fixed order, by date, most recent at the head of the first page

    * within any list: a bookmark can be dragged and dropped, nudged one step up or down, nudged all the way to top or bottom.

    Regards
    Graham

OK: the list of lists ('My Lists').

    > As it is now they are sorted by when I add them

My list of lists is fixed order, but not by date; mine is alphabetical:
    http://www.diigo.com/list/grahamperrin
    and my view of yours
http://www.diigo.com/list/Richbernier is similarly alphabetical (currently beginning with 01, ending with Library…).

    > I want some list to be listed higher than others because they are
    > more important. Think of browser bookmarks...you can grab a
    > bookmark or a folder and move it somewhere else. Make sense?

    Perfect sense.

Question 1: is your wish to raise the level of a list:

    * for you

    or

    * for other viewers of your list of lists

    or

    * for all?

Question 2: if at http://www.diigo.com/profile/richbernier you could present one, two, maybe three of your favourite lists, would that come close to your wish?

Question 3: if Diigo searches could somehow increase the presence of your favourite lists, for you and for other viewers, would that be *more* or *less* welcome than a manually sorted list of lists?

    Regards
    Graham

    ---
Postcript: FAYT (find as you type) (find-as-you-type) search would be great but such things place surprisingly great load on servers.
  • Graham Perrin

Question 4: re http://www.diigo.com/dashboard/ if to your dashboard you could add a few of your favourite lists, would that be more, or less, welcome than a manually sorted list of lists?

(Et cetera, I'm trying to step back and visualise whether the list of lists is *truly* the most suitable place for you to prioritise (raise the level) of some thing(s).)
  • Graham Perrin

Here's a list of your lists, in your numbered order but without the numbers, and using the v=p trick:

    > you are not allow to access".

That denial of access (denial of viewing) is harmonious with your setting visibility to members only.

    > I invited myself to join

For as long as you have one or more *open* invitations at your
http://groups.diigo.com/group_mana/member_manage?group_name=gpwebsite then in the Open invitations tab, you will find the 'Invite URL' alongside the name every invitation that is open.

I suspect that if two or more invitations are open, then
in each row the Invite URL is the same.

    @ Diigo

To me it does seem a bug in Diigo Groups workflow that:
when you have no open invitations, neither
    http://groups.diigo.com/group_mana/invite_others?group_name=gpwebsite nor
http://groups.diigo.com/group_mana/member_manage?group_name=gpwebsite will express the URL (the ticket) through which non-members may be invited.

(Andrew: I'm constructing those URLs. Please be reassured that I don't actually see your group management interface.)

    > I've changed to "apply to join" and clicked "save" several times.
    > Now it shows as above on the group management page, but still
    > shows "by invitation only" marked when I click edit.

    That behaviour sounds possibly buggy.
