[News] New search upgrade - 18 views
-
Just completed the search upgrade. You should notice a speed improvement.
Please give it a test drive and let us know any issues you notice.
PS. for those who had some trouble retrieving their tags this weekend, the temporary interruption due to our backend upgrade should have been restored. Please try again and advise. -
We checked and seem ok here. Please try again.
Two possible causes: sometimes it could be error due to other services, or we restarted the server this morning to enable the new upgrade - you may happen to catch the temp. down time.
How many characters are allowed in the tag list? - 42 views
-
How many tags you normally add to your bookmarks? I think our limit is more than adequate.
While tagging is very helpful, don't really see why people add excessive tagging? -
In this post, your original tags were:
"bug,feature,feature idea,tag,tags"
I have edited to only "feature, tag" - to keep it more consistent and easier for others to locate relevant posts.

Glad you notice and enjoy it.
But i would still like to voice my opinion about some issues...
>
> 1.Choosing between private and public bookmarking is still not fast enough, it feels silly to have a drop-down-menu as there are only two options namely private/public, it would be much faster to have the two options as buttons.
The spacing a little bit tight there already. But nevertheless, see your point - will discuss here.

> But lo and behold, i then discovered QuickD (i didn't associate the name with bookmarking...how silly of me). Now, instead of using the diigo popup-bookmarking-window, i always use QuickD. It's just much faster to right away be able to tag your bookmarks in the so called "search box". There are a couple of issues with this though.
>
> 2.1 I'm not presented with Tag Suggestions, i get Search Suggestions! Therefore i propose to make it an option to get Tag Suggestions instead in the "search box". (I never use diigo's search box for searching since i don't know the keyboard shortcut for it, if it exists... I use ctrl+k for firefox' own search box...)
Diigo search box (multi-category) is one feature that may not be apparent at first glance, but very useful once you know how to use it. For those who haven't tried, I'd recommend reading the instruction http://www.diigo.com/help/search/3 and give that a try.
Can you please elaborate more how you will envision a new "Tag Suggestion" icon / function will work in toolbar?
> 2.2 I cannot choose between private and public bookmarking with QuickD. Since there's a notable difference between what kind of links i want public and private, it would be quite intuitive if i could specify that all bookmarks tagged with specific work related tag should be kept private. Or perhaps all items that have a specific tag prefix could be kept private (i use 2read, 2research, 2do and other odd conventions).
I see. However, my first reaction is that is doing all these will really take lots of time saving vs. just using our Diigo bookmark popup window where you can achieve anything that you wish to accomplish without all these extra engineering effort? Before going back to our team for further discussion, we should assess is this a feature that's only going to be used by few users, or will be helpful to many to deserve the extra engineering effort.
Maybe you can open up a separate thread on this particular issue to engage in other users's attention & feedback - would be nice to get some sense how widely used is QuickD and how people feel about it.
>
> Nowadays as we use the net, our leisure and work activities mix and therefore one cannot expect that all bookmarks on a given day be tagged either private or public. I will use both any given day. The difficulties in choosing between private and public has led to a situation where 15% of my bookmarks are only public...
Understand :-)
>
> 2.3 It would be nice if i could specify tags that go directly to a Group too, like "collaboration" for the group "Collaboration". Another possibility, would be to use the Delicious prefix "for:" to send bookmarks to some group, i don't know how this should be handled when bookmarking simultaneously to delicious though...
Good point - will discuss here.
>
> 2.4 All QuickD bookmarks will be marked unread, although i've read them.
The idea behind QuickD is that often people use it to do rapid bookmarking, and come back to revisit them when they have time, thus, we make them default as unread. But now I see that some (like you) are using QuickD in a different way and marking them as unread probably not the best way to do it.
Please include this point in your new thread. Again, we want to gain a better understanding of how our users are using this feature to give us better assessment what changes are absolutely necessary, and what are nice to have but not mission-critical. thanks

How to close a solved post? - 37 views

Hi,
Very good points here. Thanks very much for actively thinking along and sharing! Really appreciate it :-)
We have an internal tracking system for feature / bugs, etc, but not in a forum env't. Will discuss more here.
However, while this is a very desirable feature, we need to carefully juggle our development priorities, given our limited resources. Do we spend our time on mission-critical features development, vs. a desirable enhancement but much less direct impact to Diigo growth? Good challenge to us :-)
Does the DiigoLab put off? - 20 views

Diigo Lab - we only roll it out when we have some alpha feature that we'd like to open it up for users to try out.
So, for example, a new alpha toolbar (one that has major changes - that we wish to do limited release first to get some feedback), or a certain alpha website feature (such as a widget) that we can release independently.
We will advise when something new is available to our users to try. It will not show when it's not needed.
Hope this answers your question. -
For example, "Add To Diigo" button - http://www.diigo.com/tools/add_to_diigo. More to come.
When "Diigo Lab" is turned on, we will first announce in our blog / forum / What's New and you'll find it in "Tools" - that's where you can find tools, setting, etc.
Since we're talking about "Add To Diigo", if you have a blog, please add one. Thanks!

Sorry, I should have participated in the discussion earlier - was too busy with other tasks lately to answer the forum questions until now.
Sorry for the temporary hiccup & inconvenience. This is related to our list server that temporarily went down yesterday (being worked on), but should be fine now. We recently upgraded our search (last time it went down was during the upgrade period.) You should all notice a performance improvement since our recent upgrade. We will continue making our performance tuning a high priority to improve your overall user experience.

editing highlighted text - 50 views

Thanks for a lot of good suggestions and input.
1) We don't allow highlight editing now because otherwise the in-situ highlight won't match up properly. Considering the pros and cons, we think it's important to have the highlighting overlaying and showing up when viewing the original webpage.
if editing is really necessary now, you can always copy it into a in-situ sticky note to that highlight and edit it there for your own consumption.
Having said all that, we will have some alternative solution and pretty cool related features coming up (sorry, cannot reveal the details yet.) So Diigo is easily your best choice to stay with, IMHO :-) So, stay tuned!
2) JMresearch - do you know we offer "Copy - with or without format" in our content selection menu? that's a pretty handy feature - one that few realize but quite useful. Please give that a try.
Video clipping - different users have different needs, and research comes in various forms. For example, when a marketing person doing research, the ability to save and share this type of media becomes useful. Another example, I sometimes see some funny clips that I'd like to save and share with others :-) I'm the one that nags our team to get this feature implemented, haha!
Now we make that into an optional On / Off feature , it should not be disturb users' normal browsing activities. A new toolbar will soon be released that will allow you to tag your video clipping as well. Our goal is to make Diigo a very versatile platform / service that can be easily customizable to suit your needs. -
That's an interesting suggestion - will discuss here. Thanks

It would be replaced by a more complex command copy+paste the highlighted text intu the sticky immediately under the right Diigo menu "Highlight & Sticky & Picp up the text" as I considered. -

In the end, I don't want styled text, I just want pure information w/o the original styling. does this make sense? I do trends research and copying the styles over just becomes visually distracting when studying what I've clipped over a given week.
>
To make it optional (styled or not) is probably doable (nearly anything is possible). Question is how much demand, and is it worthwhile our extra engineering effort. I'd imagine majority users don't mind (and in fact, desire) having the highlight styled as the original site, and this particular feature request is probably only for very small niche of users.
Just curious, would you and a segment of users be willing for pay a fee for this premium feature, and if so, what kind of fee structure would make sense to you all as users and for us to consider offering premium services? Not trying to put anyone on the spot here, but rather to collect some marketing data for us...
Welcome feedback from everyone.

Thanks. Glad that you find Diigo useful. Please kindly help us spread the words and share with your friends and colleagues.
yes, several users have pointed this out. We will switch the default to alphabetical setting in the next day or so. But will soon offer a user preference setting to remember your personal preference to solve this issue once and for all.

Hi Kim,
Another power user! Awesome :-) Welcome to the Diigo community!
Agree. On our To-Do and we will do it quite well compared with other services :-) -
Agree. voting should be done in a meaningful way. We're giving some thought to it - thus, I said, if we do it, hopefully it will be in a more meaningful way :-)

Loyola and Locative,
We're putting a lot of thought into this. Thanks for your input.
QuickD: Ctrl-Q - 93 views

Thanks for pointing this out. We will discuss here to see how to make that an optional setting.
-
In the latest toolbar (FF 1.0 2007053100), there is now an option to "disable or enable" QuickD keyboard shortcut.
Toolbar > > Options > >Bookmark and Highlight tab > > Bookmark settings > > check or uncheck "enable keyboard shortcut" -
We cannot reproduce what you're describing.
How do you set Ctrl-Q to quit FF to start with? That's not a standard FF shortcut.

[Wanted] Call for interesitng Diigo applications / usecases - we want to hear from you ... - 31 views

Hi everyone,
We're preparing some marketing material and evaluate some new features. We would really love to hear and talk to some of you to see how Diigo is being used, and in what industry and application.
I'd particularly like to talk to some educators and see how Diigo is being used in a classroom setting. Of course, all industry and applications are very welcome and appreciated! Bet there are a lot of creative ways in Diigo that we don't even realize yet :-)
Please feel free to to share your experience here, or drop me an email to info at diigo dot com discuss in private. I really, really, really, really want to hear from you. Best chance to get one-on-one with me :-) and get your testimonial showcased.
Thanks so much for your help in advance,
cheers,
~ Maggie
PS. We'll do a Diigo usecase / application contest soon (need to do some prep work here) - all of your contribution here will also be considered as part of the forthcoming contest. Please also help us think along to see what will make this contest attractive. Thanks a lot -
Besides these public posts, I've also received several emails. Thanks.
Please continue keep your feedback / input coming. Love to hear and learn from you. -
Great.

We've just made some upgrades to our backend. Without going into too much technical details, unfortunately, slash ( / or \) is something that the new version doesn't support yet, and it's something that we won't immediately resolve right away (on our to-do list though.)
Suggestion: please do a global edit on those tags with a slash to something else (for example, tag-tag, replace slash with a hyphen instead, or whatever new convention you wish.)
Sorry for the inconvenience. But considering the speed performance improvement, and many other reasons, this "switching cost" may worth the temporary hassle.
