    estrogen therapy in surgical menopause preserves memory.  Rapid decline in estrogen levels post surgical menopause is associated with cognitive/memory decline.  Versus placebo, estrogen therapy preserved memory function.

    estradiol plays an important role in neuropreservation following cerebral ischemia.  The mechanism is through ER alpha stimulation.  The result is a reduction of ROS and oxidative stress.  This occurs through the classic intranuclear and the rapid membrane receptors as well.

    Estradiol inhibits glutamate mediated influx of calcium and thus cell death in cell line.  Glutamate, the principle excitatory neurotransmitter, is involved in neurodegeneration through activation of calcium channels.  This study of cell line cultures found that Estradiol inhibits this process.  I question whether this is applicable to both men and women.  Time will tell.

    Just the abstract here.  Declining estradiol production found to be associated with increased cognitive dysfunction or cognitive decline in those using aromatase inhibitor therapy.  Aromatase inhibition therapy is used to block Testosterone to Estradiol production in women with ER+ breast cancer.

    3 year study finds improvement in classic menopausal symptoms for women in perimenopause and menopause with improvement in other parameters: fasting glucose, cholesterol, MMP-9, CRP, fibrinogen and other clotting factors.  This study used bioidentical Bi-est, progesterone, and in some DHEA and Testosterone.

    Study finds association between elevated Estradiol in young men and obesity.  No correlation was found with Testosterone.  This fits other research that points to early increased Estradiol production and late decrease in low T.  The men in this study were "young".  Testing was done in saliva.

    Abstract ahead of print.  Low Testosterone in men is associated with increased risk of metabolic syndrome and type II Diabetes.  Just the opposite is the case in women: elevated Testosterone in women is associated with increasing metabolic syndrome and diabetes risk. Low  SHBG is associated with increased risk in both.

    900 mg of NAC over short 4 week course provided significant improvement in behavior of children with autism.  No pre treatment evaluation was performed.  One wonders if therapeutic therapy was actually undertaken if the results would have been better.  NAC is a precursor to Glutathione production and detoxification compromise is common place in autism.
