space-separated tags presented as comma-separated tags but ultimately OK - 67 views

API tag space comma separator compatibility puzzle resolved
  • Graham Perrin

    When I use a custom version of Post to Diigo I see that each space between tags

    %20

    is presented in the dialogue as a comma between tags

    ,

    without a space.

    Screen shot to follow.

    The dialogue states

    space separated. Use " " for tag with multiple words.

    but if I ignore that advice (if I use no spaces, if I leave the commas) the end result seems to be OK :)

    Are there steps towards compatibility with other (non-Diigo) services that use tags?

    Just wondering …
  • Graham Perrin

    More recently, the Post to Diigo dialogue presents as
    space-separated
    the tags that I script as
    comma-separated.

    The end result is fine.

    Tag: resolved

Multiple copies of a bookmark, some without annotations (editable URLs in Diigolet 4.0b14) - 134 views

Diigolet 3.1b572 4.0b14 bookmark multiplication URL edition review gpd4
  • Graham Perrin

    In a previous version of Diigolet, it was impossible to change the URL of a bookmark after its creation.

    In 3.1b572 it's possible to change the URL, but beware:

    * the annotations that you see on screen after the change are not associated with the URL that you enter

    * the change of URL creates a copy of the bookmark, without annotations.
  • Graham Perrin

    Now using Diigolet 4.0b14, I definitely caution against using the URL field of the bookmark dialogue to attempt a change of URL.

    You'll gain an additional bookmark with the same title but a different URL, but highlights etc. will not appear on both. Moreover: depending on the workflow/order of things, you may end up with highlights lost (missing from both copies).

    I don't have that problem. This suggests a problem with your installation.

    Please post details to a separate topic, include at least:

    * your operating system, and version
    * your browser, and version
    * the version of Diigo.

    Thanks

    > Adding to the uncertainty: the misleading word private.

    IMHO it will be impossible to resolve this topic sanely without first stopping misuse of the word private. This stoppage must come from Diigo. Let's see how the forthcoming version looks…

    Diigo software and services ;)

    People are too often confused by Diigo's approach to this.

    Things are not equivalent.

    Bookmark ≠ page comment, page comment ≠ sticky note,
    bookmark ≠ floating note,
    bookmark ≠ highlight, highlight ≠ sticky note, etc..

    A bookmark in your own collection of bookmarks is:

    * either public (by default), or private.

    With a public bookmark: all highlights are public.

    With a private bookmark: highlights are not normally revealed.

    Major considerations

    1. The highlights that Diigo describes as private are visible to the
    public through interfaces such as
    http://www.diigo.com/user/Firepol?tab=9 | Expand All

    2. If you stick a public note to a highlight, then that highlight will become visible through additional interfaces.

    IMHO Diigo's description of highlights as private is misleading, as demonstrated by point (1).

    Essential reading:
    Private highlights are not private; they're public at Diigo About and elsewhere;
    the plan there is to use the word personal in lieu of the word public.

    FWIW my own opinion is that users are too often unaware of, or confused by, the whole private/personal/public/group caboodle in Diigo. I would prefer to see a highlight described as simply a highlight. One simple word. Add to the description only if necessary.

    Regards
    Graham

  • Graham Perrin

    See below, foot of page, under the heading Diigo Tools:

    Diigolet For All Browsers
    Diigo Chrome Extension

    - those things are just two of a range of tools.

    You can use one, or both, but neither one presents annotations automatically; you must load Diigolet, or click the 'd' icon, to view annotations.

    Please note that Diigolet offers more features.

    (Using the extension for Chrome, you'll see no page comments.)

    That wording may be outdated. Possibly from version 3.x of Diigo, or earlier.

    Try:

    1. Group settings
    2. Edit

    then you should see the categories.

    Neither Microsoft Office binary nor Office Open XML files can be uploaded to Diigo 5.

    I rarely use the capture feature of Diigo (use Firefox only for testing) but that's a good suggestion.

    > and annotate

    AFAIR there was a similar suggestion, long ago, that Diigolet should offer a link to the annotated view of a page (should not require a trip to the library).
