Diigo anti-spam policy & this group is moderated (diigo-related only) - 65 views

spam suggestion forum group home description spam (electronic) help hint
  • Graham Perrin

I just realised, all …diigo.com links to the 'User Forum' lead directly to this forum, without drawing attention to the group's description.

Maybe the links should refer instead to the group home page,
    http://groups.diigo.com/groups/Diigo_HQ
(with a slightly longer description to clarify what's not allowed).

On the other hand, it's probably necessary to visit the home page (with the group's description) to join the group before posting.

So, no real excuse for posting content that is unrelated to Diigo software/services.

    Diigo Community ≠ Diigo Community

Maggie, part of the problem is the name of this group: Diigo Community.

Users probably assume a relationship between
Diigo Community (the group, with bookmarks) and hot bookmarks from the
Diigo Community. The assumption is perfectly reasonable, but there is no such relationship. So we find ourselves:

    * deleting hundreds of bookmarks
    * deleting hundreds of topics
    * flagging many people as spammers.

In an effort to alleviate the problem, I have added a line to the description of this group. To reduce confusion I think that this group needs a new name.

Suggestion: a new name for this group

(Ignoring http://groups.diigo.com/group/Diigo_HQ/content/956274 and other more recent discussions of electronic spam … this topic seems to be the original …)

With a preference to receive immediate notification of posts to this group,
    and occasionally moderating …

… since the introduction of the freemium model for Diigo, I see
far fewer spammy and accidental posts to this group.
    Delightful :-)

    Is that decrease coincidental?

Or were parts of the September 2010 reorganisations specially designed to reduce the problem of spam?

Moderate new members: banned user did not disappear from list - 35 views

bug resolved worksforme AJAX inconsistency group moderate ban flag spam (electronic) banner done
  • Graham Perrin

A few minutes ago, I was prompted to moderate new members for this Diigo Community group.

I selected (checked) the uppermost name, there were multiple posts from the user, probably the old posts of a past member re-joining.
(Off-topic: maybe this approved user was the fenman mentioned in nearby
    http://groups.diigo.com/group/Diigo_HQ/content/1044955 .)

I clicked approve and the banner Done appeared,
with a prompt to moderate one more new member.

    I opted to
Ban from this group & Flag as Spammer
    and the banner Done reappeared,
but the user remained, so repeated the ban,
    and the banner Done reappeared,
    but the user remained.

Ignoring the problem, I followed the breadcrumb trail to Diigo Community and found no prompt to moderate.

This bug bit again, see screen shot 002 at http://www.wuala.com/Diigo-4/1044972.

I approved some, not all, listed users.

Then, I clicked to ban and flag the remaining four.

The system responded Done but all four remain in the list.
  • Graham Perrin

    Again, http://www.wuala.com/Diigo-4/1044972 shots 003-009.

Incidentally, shot 007 exposes a design bug that I reported long ago: moving targets. I aim for a button, but when I click, it reaches something other than the button. The banner (in this case Done.) displaces content and the content is displaced again - without user interaction - when the banner disappears.

    > were removed, just still visible

Probably true, I might check later.

On three of three occasions 10th March, 12th March, 14th March) when I first approved some, then banned some people: the banned people remained in the list following the ban. I wonder whether this bug is reproducible every time.

Today, a swift reload of the page corrected the list. My guess: an AJAX issue, I'll add that tag to this topic.

    Re http://groups.diigo.com/group/Diigo_HQ/content/1912726 (2010-09-18),
Uploads to Diigo caches from 5.1.0.8 for Firefox: PNG versions are missing

Whilst PNG snapshots are unavailable — and bearing in mind that live content in HTML-based caches reduces their reliability (can't easily tell whether all of what's seen is truly from the past) — I'll either:

    a) use WebArchive-enabled applications e.g. the Save As… feature of Safari

    or

    b) use memonic beta

    — for the rare occasions when I want a truthful snapshot of a page (or parts thereof) at a point in time.

Me too, I'm enjoying the cleanliness of the UserVoice UI.

(No tags, no smilies, no double or triple smilies, no explanations of mood …  just sensible minimalist use of search + categorisation.)
  • Graham Perrin

I'm very screenshot-oriented, so my contributions to the how-to forum http://feedback.diigo.com/forums/76579-how-to will be limited.

I hope that http://uservoice.com/a/d6LEZ is completed, before too long, by developers of UserVoice.

Whenever UserVoice doesn't fit the bill, I'll happily continue in this Diigo group :-)
  • Graham Perrin

Being fairly dyslexic, I rely heavily on the ability to **edit my content**. I rarely spot mistakes before I post, no matter how hard I try.

Inability to edit and (worse) inability to delete a topic and (worst) inability to post or follow in UserVoice is causing me increasing frustration. YMMV. Reluctantly, and *without disrespect* to Diigo team and community:

    — I'll probably continue in this group for most things.

Forcing new windows, disrespecting user preferences: the target="_blank" effect - 39 views

UI GUI dislike target _blank new window suggestion gpd4
  • Graham Perrin

The user, *never* a site, should decide whether something is to open in a new window.

If a new window is intended, it should be explicit before a link is followed.

    Workaround

    Use raw HTML when writing.

That's tedious, and prone to human error, and in some parts of Diigo the errors are difficult or impossible to correct.

Also, some Diigo URLs don't work first time - even when correct HTML is used.

    Suggestion

    At https://secure.diigo.com/setting the setting
[√] Open the link in the same window
    should be more effective.

At least, the preference should be respected in groups.

    See also

Diigo on Kosmix - 74 or more links, a mixture of relative and absolute, none of which spawn a new window.

Thanks (on behalf of community) for the code suggestion.

    > Plus, have user settings override group and profile defaults when
    > one is logged into Diigo - which I believe they already do.

AFAICT the user preference to not open links in new windows is not effective in group topics (sorry for the double negative), try for example the link within http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/9#2
  • Graham Perrin

    Suggestion http://uservoice.com/a/4To3i (2010-09-18) is
do not **force** target="_blank" — it disrespects a strongly-held user preference
