new study finds that men >65 with low libido and Testosterone levels < 275 increase sexual function with Testosterone therapy.  Only libido was improved; no benefit to erectile function was noted--note that is likely due to depleted NO.  Given time that should improve with he increase in NO synthase and thus NO.  I have a fault with on elf the comments on this study: they point out that increased free Testosterone and estradiol levels were associated with improved sexual activity.  This lacks an understanding of the physiology.  In men with low T > 65, the majority are dealing with inflammation and excess weight; all of which increase aromatase activity and thus estradiol activity.  This does not indicate that an increase in estradiol activity is associated with improved libido in men.  How can elevated estrogen levels lead to low T and then increase levels are associated with improved libido?  This is merely a reflection of the body's dysfunctional physiology.  This observation of increased estradiol by no means shows cause and effect.  Scientists need to due a better job in vetting what they write!

this study showed salivary cortisol to be an "excellent" means to evaluate both those with adrenal disease and adrenal dysfunction.  Salivary test is a good tool to evaluate the free active cortisol.

12 months of Testosterone in women with premature ovarian failure found no benefit in quality of life measures.  Testosterone is being marketed and touted as a means to help women through menopause.  This study, though no side effects found, no benefit found.

study finds variation of thyroid values within the reference range have physiologic impact.  The point is: just because the values are "normal" does not mean the thyroid function is normal.

Adiponectin is negatively associated with LH, FSH production at the level of the pituitary and Testosterone at the level of the testicle.  Meaning: a risking adiponectin, as found in obesity, is associated with a down regulated HPA stimulation and Testosterone production.  This study, however, found a local autocrine/paracrine effect on sperm that was quite the opposite.

Estrogen therapy in women recently postmenopausal, found to improve symptoms of depression and anxiety.  The mean age of women in this study was 52.7.  Average age of menopause is 51, so apprx 1 year postmenopausal in this study.  Both premarin and bioidentical estradiol was used in different arms of the study.  Bioidentical progesterone was used in all 3 arms.

Despite evidence that non-smoking, normal BMI, regular exercise, high fruit/vegetable intake and low/moderate alcohol intake, less than 1% of men change lifestyle.  Translation:  many don't want health even when presented with evidence of its benefits and the means to achieve it.   This study found a decrease in cognitive decline in individuals undergoing these lifestyle changes.

Again, Testosterone and here Estradiol are merely there for libido and sex.  What tunnel vision?!  What about hsCRP?  What about fibrinogen?  What about IL-1beta?  What about TNF-alpha?  These inflammatory cytokines have all been reported to elevate as a result of estrogen production in men.   And PSA?  No mention of it here.   This linear, tunnel vision thinking on hormones has got to stop! The study points out that all clients were using AIs and SERMs irregardless of whether they had elevated estrogens or not.  That is not a well designed study.  One group should have had AI's if elevated estrogens were present and another group should not--this would compare the effects of aromatase activity.  Second, this was simply a retrospective chart review.  Third, a 50% conversion of 34,000 + men is very high when you look at the literature.  Fourth, they point to gynecomastia as a means of negative?  The cardiovascular implications are more significant.  These studies just seem to focus on superficial things.  Fifth, did libido problems exist before?  What were the free levels?   This falls in the paucity of data (2 studies) that point to excessive lowering of estradiol effecting libido and sexual performance.

When you look at PCOS in women, it is really just the early manifestation of Metabolic Syndrome.  PCOS no longer needs to be viewed through the prism of hormones and/or infertility but the means through which disease will walk.

Very interesting article.  Early Progesterone treatment, in animal model, shown to improve neuropathic pain recovery.  This is by no means the first study to show this.  This has been shown numerous times in TBI, but the timing of therapy was the purpose of this article.  What is very interesting here is that the metabolites implicated here in the recovery are the same metabolites implicated in an increased tumor potential.

New study finds no cardiovascular benefits from resveratrol.  It has long been claimed that reserveratrol is the polyphenol from red wine and chocolate that is the source of cardiovascular benefits such as found in the "french paradox".  However, this new study finds that resveratrol provides no benefit.  Studies still point to dark chocolate and red wine as means to reduce inflammation and reduce CVD risk, this study just points away from resveratrol as the source of the benefit.

Since when did one medium of evaluation become the only standard.  Since serum T has been the historical standard, that is the only window of evaluation??  This study points to higher free Testosterone levels in saliva versus serum. Has anyone ever thought that we are merely looking through different windows of the same process.  Each window here, serum and saliva, are merely giving us different information on hormones.  That doesn't make one right or wrong, it just requires interpretation.  Science is about being objective! Saliva is the best means to evaluate intracellular hormone levels.  These levels should be different than serum.  Why should anyone think that the total levels would correlate with that delivered to a cell.  Think.

This article finds the mean TSH level in the "healthy" population to be 1.5.  Calls into question any level above that with symptoms of hypothyroid.  Full, adequate thyroid including free T3 and rT3 must be done.
