    Metformin shown to suppress TSH secretion without change in free t4 or free t3 levels.  This again, shows the lack of reliability of the test TSH.  With the suppression of TSH indicated in this study, the free t4 and t3 should have been elevated, but were obviously not.

    TSH is not a reliable reproducible reflection of tissue T3 levels. In fact, in many ways TSH is merely just a screening tool. Research has shown that inflammation decreases TSH levels.

    This study shows that older men are associated with low TSH, reduced response to TRH, lowered T3, and normal T4 levels.  The main find in this study was the decrease in pituitary responsiveness to TRH and the reduced TSH as we age.  TSH is unreliable as a test.

  • Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) tests are not useful for estimating the clinical and metabolic severity of primary overt thyroid failure. Meier and colleagues (p311) found that, in contrast with the accuracy of serum TSH measurement in the early diagnosis of hypothyroidism, clinical markers and circulating thyroid hormones much more accurately reflect the degree of tissue hypothyroidism. Initiation of replacement therapy should be guided by clinical presentation and circulating thyroid hormones and not by TSH concentrations

    study finds no increased risk of CHD, HF, or CV death in subclinical hypothyroidism in older adults.  No insight is gained from this article, due to the use of TSH as the only tool for thyroid assessment.  TSH has been shown to become unreliable as a sole thyroid assessment tool an aging population.

    Elderly individuals with the lowest normal TSH values were found to be associated with increased depressive symptoms.  These patients were clearly not hyperthyroid.  This fits with other data that points to increased inflammation and reduced TSH levels.  Increased inflammation is associated with increased depression.

    IL-6 is known to stimulate the HPA and increase cortisol production.  Both, IL-6 and cortisol can decrease TSH production.

    HCG therapy induced anti-HCG antibodies.  No binding was found to TSH.  But, the concern is the binding to TSH, LH, FSH and resultant hypothyroidism or hypogonadism.
