Endogenous Estrogens Influence Endothelial Function in Young Men - 0 views

aromatase inhibition with anastrozole, in this study, resulted in impaired flow mediated dilation.  No resultant change in inflammatory markers were seen.  Again, my problem with this study is the use of serum for the hormone evaluation.  I would bet not enough aromatase inhibition was provided.

Obesity and Severe obesity forecasts through 2030 - 0 views

  •
Very real and scary statistics. Obesity is the greatest health problem facing the US today. 42%-51% by 2030...Ouch! Ever seen WALL-E. However, it is not the govt responsibility to control what we eat. Their regulations are in part responsible for this. This needs to be attacked through education, personal responsibility, and changing the way medicine works (of which many of the current medical boards/associations are opposed too).

Progesterone Receptor-A and -B Have Opposite Effects on Proinflammatory Gene Expression... - 0 views

  •
Progesterone is known to have anti-inflammatory action.  This study looked at the anti-inflammatory action of progesterone on the myometrium of the uterus during pregnancy.  The anti-inflammatory effect, in this study, was through Progesterone Receptor B.  There was a change in the dominance to PR A late in pregnancy.  This would promote inflammatory signaling and thus contractions with the onset of labor.

no change in prostate cancer progression in man with prostate cancer on testosterone therapy.    Additionally, the PSA decreased.  The follow up was 2 years.  Two negatives: first, this was an observation study of one man, second,  was that analysis was via serum and I don't see that aromatase activity was monitored.

Homocysteine Lowering and Cardiovascular Events after Acute Myocardial Infarction - NEJM - 0 views

  •
NORVIT trial showed that vitamin B12, B6, and folic acid reduced homocysteine levels by 27%, however it did not lower MI, stroke,or mortality rate.  ONe variable to consider is the polypharmacy of the study group ie.  they were taking statins, beta blockers, diuretics, coumadin... so was the lack of change in mortality the result of polypharmacy?  And was the polypharmacy blocking the increased CVD risks associated with elevated homocysteine that would have been treatable with vitamin B12, B6, and folic acid.

Validation of salivary testosterone as a screening test for male hypogonadism - 0 views

  •
This study reviewed two studies and both validated salivary testosterone as a method of testing. The statistical significance was very high. Additionally, they found a 47% decline in testosterone over the study lifespan of a man. So, again, what is the opposition to saliva testing? The only thing I can think of is resistance to change and/or lack of education. As a scientist, neither is acceptable.

  •
This article tells it all in the conclusion: "Changing our current practice pattern could take many years, but we may one day prescribe cholesterol-raising medications to certain patients". The long term effect of lowering cholesterol MAY stabilize plaques (not reduce), but at the expense of the brain. So, we may all have stable plaques, but we just won't know it because our brains will be fried.
