Testosterone therapy lowered HgbA1c in poorly controlled Diabetics. These patients were followed out to 52 weeks. Testosterone therapy, as is lifestyle change, a long term strategy of Diabetes control. Studies in controlled Diabetics have not shown a reduction in HgbA1c consistently. Total cholesterol and waist circumference were also reduced.

This seemed to counter the positive effects by estrogen. Others have proposed that combination E2 and T therapy hide the negative effects of testosterone on CV health in women.

Older study finds weak synthetic androgen improves weight loss in obese postmenopausal women. This study compared nandrolone decanoate to spironolactone--an androgen receptor antagonist. No change in glucose or insulin was seen. Hard to draw a strong conclusion from this study due to the comparison of a synthetic androgen versus an anti-androgen. This comparison could have exaggerated the benefit of androgen in these women.

Study out of Canada finds that Metformin reduces mortality rates for all-cause and due to prostate cancer in those with diabetes. The key point here is glucose. Metformin is going to inhibit gluconeogenesis and this limit hepatic glucose production feeding the cancer. This is just the abstract and several questions come to mind: what was the glucose control like in these patients? What dietary changes if any were these patients following? A better study would be to compare the effects of a ketogenic diet with restriction of glutamine versus the metformin.

This rat study found that Estradiol added to Testosterone increased "markedly". Estrogen plays a role in the genesis of prostate disease. However, this varies among individuals. The response of prostate cancer to estradiol appears to change according to the progression of the cancer.

These changes were more pronounced in those with a family h/o of diabetes.
