Interesting finding in this study. They looked at Total Testosterone and bioavailable Testosterone and found that antidepressant therapy increased both values post treatment.  This is counter to what has been readably seen in men--with a decline.  The abstract here does not point disclose the actual Testosterone numbers.  I wonder if the well known disruption of the CYP enzymes by antidepressants slowed clearance and increased Testosterone levels.  This study did not look at other hormones or inflammatory cytokines.  Very tunneled vision study.  Nothing can be drawn from this study.

Estrogen therapy in women recently postmenopausal, found to improve symptoms of depression and anxiety.  The mean age of women in this study was 52.7.  Average age of menopause is 51, so apprx 1 year postmenopausal in this study.  Both premarin and bioidentical estradiol was used in different arms of the study.  Bioidentical progesterone was used in all 3 arms.

Women with SLE enter menopause earlier.  This study comments on the need for hormone testing in women with SLE and appropriate therapy as indicated.  This study recommended against estrogen therapy due to studies revealing increased flares.  The problem with those studies is that they looked at OCPs and synthetic HRT.

meta-analysis found no high level of evidence to support Huperzine A in the treatment of vascular dementia.  The conclusion sounds scientifically sound, but when you look at the studies included: this is a meta-analysis of 1 of Huperzine A and vascular dementia.  This one study was of 14 participants only and they found improvement in daily functioning.   There are a lot of animal studies that point out benefits of huperzine A and even the mechanisms of action,  but human studies are lacking.  That is a better conclusion.  

Again, Testosterone and here Estradiol are merely there for libido and sex.  What tunnel vision?!  What about hsCRP?  What about fibrinogen?  What about IL-1beta?  What about TNF-alpha?  These inflammatory cytokines have all been reported to elevate as a result of estrogen production in men.   And PSA?  No mention of it here.   This linear, tunnel vision thinking on hormones has got to stop! The study points out that all clients were using AIs and SERMs irregardless of whether they had elevated estrogens or not.  That is not a well designed study.  One group should have had AI's if elevated estrogens were present and another group should not--this would compare the effects of aromatase activity.  Second, this was simply a retrospective chart review.  Third, a 50% conversion of 34,000 + men is very high when you look at the literature.  Fourth, they point to gynecomastia as a means of negative?  The cardiovascular implications are more significant.  These studies just seem to focus on superficial things.  Fifth, did libido problems exist before?  What were the free levels?   This falls in the paucity of data (2 studies) that point to excessive lowering of estradiol effecting libido and sexual performance.

Study finds translocation of alum from vaccines from muscle to brain in some individuals.  This leads to the neurologically condition termed Macrophagic myofasciitis.  Study after study has shown this connection and now studies are showing this translocation of immune cells to the brain resulting in neuro-inflammation.  All I hear from pro vaccinators is vitriol.  Here is science.

New study finds no cardiovascular benefits from resveratrol.  It has long been claimed that reserveratrol is the polyphenol from red wine and chocolate that is the source of cardiovascular benefits such as found in the "french paradox".  However, this new study finds that resveratrol provides no benefit.  Studies still point to dark chocolate and red wine as means to reduce inflammation and reduce CVD risk, this study just points away from resveratrol as the source of the benefit.

Testosterone therapy aids weight loss in study of obese men.  The presentation of the potentially biased study (study was funded by the makers of the Testosterone used in the study) proposes Testosterone as a pharmacologic bariatric treatment.  That conclusion is ludicrous!  Testosterone therapy has been shown to improve insulin sensitivity, improve glucose uptake, reduces inflammation, improve muscle building, and reduce the parameters of metabolic syndrome--all of which underlies the obesity.  Thus, men with low T and obesity, Testosterone therapy is playing a causal role in the obesity and thus Testosterone therapy is treating the cause.  But to describe it as pharmacologic bariatric therapy is false and misleading. http://ow.ly/CKrje 

Study finds desiccated thyroid (armour thyroid) was associated with great weight loss, mood improvement than T4 alone.  Desiccated thyroid was preferred by patients in the study.  Conversion rate was 100 mcg T4 to 88 mg desiccated thyroid.

This study of inner city men found low T associated with methadone use.  Narcotics are a known risk factor for low T.  The free T was calculated from serum.  This equilibrium dialysis is based on too many variables.  Look at the studies on equilibrium dialysis.  This study also found calculated free T was not associated with insulin resistance.  However, insulin resistance is a peripheral tissue dysfunction not a serum dysfunction.  So, a calculated free T (not reality) in the serum shows me nothing of the peripheral activity.  For example, inflammation has been shown to increase aromatase activity in the prostate tissue only.  The thinking in the conclusions of so many of these studies is soooo flawed.

Study reviews the studies of IV vitamin C and cancer.  The authors discuss the mechanism of action of the high dose vitamin C.  The authors are correct in their conclusion that a large body of evidence is lacking and that the majority are case study.  However, to even discount these in the face of the safety and the reduction in side effects associated with chemotherapy by IV vitamin C would be unacceptable. To delay recommendation due to a full lack of understanding would be unacceptable as well.   No deaths have been reported due to IV vitamin C.  Contrast this with chemotherapy.  However, case studies have pointed to IV vitamin C as a positive tool to attach cancer.  

MMAS study finds an age associated decline in Total Testosterone and free Testosterone levels. This study focus on the % decline based on other variables i.e. age, BMI...IN contrast, a 3.5% rise in DHT levels were observed. There is debate about the correlation of serum DHT and intra-tissue DHT. In fact, studies suggest there is little correlation.

This study finds a strong correlation between advancing breast cancer, decreased catalase and SOD with increasing MDA.  The authors of this study conclude this is a key factor in carcinogenesis and not a by-product of cancer.  This flies in the face of traditional medicines fear of antioxidant therapy in cancer.

Nice study from a few years ago found that a low dose vitamin D3 (1200 IU) significantly reduced the relative risk of the flu in school age children.  Also of note, a significant reduction in asthma attacks in those children with asthma were significantly reduced in the vitamin D3 treated group.  One interesting thing about this study was that they did not check prior or during the study if vitamin D deficiency was even present.  This study was conducted in Japan

New study: vitamin C levels correlate with cognitive and metabolic health. What is your vitamin C level? Despite the adequate levels of vitamin C intake, a large % of the individuals had inadequate vitamin C levels which points to a demand issue.  Higher oxidative stress, chronic inflammation... would drive demand for vitamin C higher. Lower vitamin C levels were associated with more metabolic disease, ie. DM, and more cognitive decline.

what a silly study!  They look at free T4, the weakest thyroid hormone and found high levels to be associated with dementia.  However, they failed to assess free T3, the most biologically active, and reverse T3, inactive.  This study was like they intentionally blinded themselves of the body's physiology to study dementia.  This is the problem with a lot of research today: they have forgotten their foundation. Many older adults struggle with poor free T4 to free T3 conversion and high reverse T3 conversion.  So, without knowing what these clients were doing in these pathways makes their conclusion obsolete.
