Diigo : The End Of Bookmarks? - 2 views

  • Diigo is perhaps one of the web’s premier research tools - this is widely accepted.
  • Diigo as a tool, could be viewed as a much more serious innovation by comparison.
  • In a real way I do not understand how anyone would need another bookmarking or annotation service. It is also a little puzzling that Diigo has not taken the Web by storm. Perhaps there are not enough people with serious research or knowledge needs out there. But that is a question for another discourse, I suggest checking Diigo out.
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • With the release of Version 3, Diigo has fairly effectively expanded its reach into the social networking venue even farther. Aside from that, the inherent tools available on Diigo as a aggregationa and research platform have been expanded greatly also. So many startups have been either hyped or constructively accentuated that it is sometimes difficult to put an actual value on them, this is not the case for any of Diigo’s faithful users.
  • Good to stress again that Diigo is not just another social bookmarking site, but a sophisticated research tool and a knowledge-sharing and social content site. Moreover the well designed user interface makes it useful for as well elementary bookmarking and note taking as for professional annotating and documentation purposes. I expect that these features will soon be widely recognized.
  • I’ve just started using Diigo and I am still in the process of discovering what great stuff it has to offer. I believe it’s one of the best tools there is for research and annotations and it’s bookmarking system might prove a lot more efficient than everything I tried before.
  • Diigo is a wonderful tool, overall. The features it offers are pretty amazing. I anticipate Diigo will revolutionize the way some things get done over the Web

  • So I opened an account. I set up about 20 accounts a week and rarely do much with them. But I love Diigo. It truly rocks. And I have set up a group called eLearning 2.0. The description reads “This group is for all those interested in the use of social software for learning and in developing new pedagogic approaches to elearning.” So please come along and join. Lets share bookmarks!

Web Worker Daily » Archive Diigo: All Things to All Bookmarks « - 0 views

  • Most web workers use some sort of online bookmarking service. We recognize that our brains can only hold so much information, and it’s useful to have our pointers available no matter where we happen to be. But how do you decide which service to use? With its version 3 relaunch, Diigo has an answer to that question: they’ve piled on the features to become the most comprehensive bookmarking site around. Whether you’ll use all of those features is another question, but their combination is at least worth a look.

iJump.co.nz » Change » Diigo (social bookmarking 2.0 style) - my new best friend - 0 views

  • Diigo (pronounced Dee’go) is a great social bookmarking site if you like to bookmark, highlight, put sticky notes (comments) on certain information you’re interested in when searching the web. Diigo is great for research. If you collect a lot of information like me, this is a great place to store everything. I know when I start to research a topic offline it usually means a tonne of books on the desk, bits and pieces of loose paper everywhere, writing pads, folders, paper, pens, highlighters. I think you get the image.  Diigo does all of the above and so much more online. And if that isn’t enough you can even blog from there too.  The tutorials are very clear and easy to understand.  I know I seriously sound like an infomercial right now but I think I’ve found a site I didn’t know I was looking for it.  Over the Easter break I’m locking myself away with a mission to learn how to drive it!

Here is a particularly informative one, http://www.phil-butler.com/2008/03/21/diigo-test-it/

If you like Diigo, please help spread the words. One easy way is to simply use the "Share" button at the bottom of the review above to share to your favorite social media sites and to your friends by email.

Your suggestion will take quite a bit more work. But I can see its value. We will look into that a little after the new release is out (soon!)

If you like our current version, the new release is going to blow you away :)

    Andrew,

Diigo's annotations are all url-centric. Generalizing that may be possible, but it would involve too much more complexity for limited benefits.

When will be possible to edit a link ?? - 172 views

edit links 553935 548173

currently Diigo only allows you to edit the url while saving the bookmark. Once saved, the only way to edit the url is to delete the bookmark and save it again.
  • Wade Ren

This will cause some complexity that we are not sure it is really worth the trouble.

for example, if you have highlighted on a url, and then changes that url to another url, do you transfer those highlights to the new url? and if so, how do we know that highlight even exist on the new url?

can you share the scenarios under which you really want to edit the url?

in the new toolbar version, you can easily remove a bookmark from the toolbar

So I think you will find "remove and re-bookmark" is just as easy as "edit"

thanks for this thoughtful piece. I think you are right on.

--- I desperately need a MY FEEDS section!!! Somewhere where I can manage the feeds from my lists, groups, tags, etc.

What do you like to do with "managing the feeds"?
  • Wade Ren

I really like that you are using diigo's annotation features to produce newsletter-like feeds.

Have you checked out our lists and webslides features? It seems to offer much of what you want for publishing, such as title and description. please let me know if that works for you.
  • Wade Ren

There are several ways to go about this.

You can keep your bookmarks private, but you can add them to a list or a group. You can then use the rss address of the list or the group to publish elsewhere.

You can do this even if the group is private . In the new release, a private list will also have a secret rss address.

    Hope these solve your needs.

I literally don't use ANY of the other features of the toolbar. In fact, I move that main button off the diigo toolbar and put int on my main toolbar -- and close the diigo toolbar altogether.
    >
    > More to the point, I actually use the Yahoo! Delicious bookmarks extension in Firefox. Yep, even though I bookmark everything through Diigo, I have the Diigo toolbar add things to Delicious -- and I'm rather frustrated about it. Because I use their toolbar to access my bookmarks, if I have to make changes to a bookmark (or delete an old one when I find the site I bookmarked is gone and replaced by URL campers) I end up making them on Delicious instead of Diigo, so my Diigo bookmarks are getting out of date! Anyway, I thought I would post a list of the things I "need" from this tool, in hopes that maybe I can stop using two services ;-)
    >
    > 1) Bookmarks Toolbar. Two Modes:
    >
    > 1.A) Recent Bookmarks: This should show the most recent bookmarks on the toolbar, not in a menu, and should allow filtering by tag(s). This lets me see the most recent 7 or 8 bookmarks on the toolbar, and should show a drop-down at the end so I can see the next most recent 20 or so (however many fit on the screen, at least). I use these bookmarks all the time when I bookmark something at home in the evening as a reminder to check it out during work hours (or vice versa). I realize this is *very* much like the "My Bookmarks" feature that's already in the tool, but having it on the toolbar serves as a visual reminder, and makes those most recent ones easier to access.

have you tried our " filtered bookmarks" button on the toolbar (which can also be dragged elsewhere) ? It provides some of the features you want above.

    >
    > 1.B) Tag Groups: shows each tag (or tag union/intersection) I select as a button on the toolbar which produces a drop down (much like putting folders inside your bookmarks toolbar folder in firefox). Pretty much like above, each menu should show the most recent bookmarks in that tag or tags, and basically serves a similar purpose except with some organization.
    >
    > 2) Search in the sidebar. I can't stress enough how being able to search without opening the web page makes the difference between relying on the bookmark service and just using my own bookmarks folder (and/or google). It should search the local copy, ideally, so it's FAST. It should also have a split results view like the one Delicious' sidebar creates -- so when you do a search you see matching tags, and then you see bookmarks which match. It should also search EVERYTHING in the bookmark (tags, name, url, my comments...). Oh, and I should be able to order the results alphabetically or chronologically (by the order I bookmarked them).

in the new toolbar to come out in a few weeks, there will be a sidebar that meets most of these needs.

    >
    > As a side note (I know I've said this before, but it bears repeating) I don't find the web search or highlighting options in the existing Diigo toolbar compelling -- they simply do not compare favorably to existing 3rd party extensions, and as a result they _detract_ from what is otherwise a very good extension (since I don't use, and can't get rid of, your search thing on my right-click menu, it's just annoyingly in the way).

we will make this optional in the right-click menu also. btw, if you do use a variety of search engines, you should experiment with our customizable search menu -- very handy.

    > I should add that one of the huge things for Del.icio.us integration was that they support "keywords" on the bookmarks, because it lets me assign a single keyword to a specific URL (even script bookmarklets) and be able to type that work into the address bar and it works -- just like the "real" Firefox bookmarks.

btw, you can also save user name or other private notes as private page comment.

another use I found for diigo is to track changing stats. for example, on this page
http://www.mybloglog.com/buzz/members/Eric/, you see how many users mybloglog has at any given time - just look at the number of friends Eric has :)

then you can add that number as a page comment and the next time you come around, you can see what was the number before and add the new number as a page comment again. This way you can track how the number changes over time.

Is the site slow for you? - 107 views

performance speed
  • Wade Ren

Recently, our personal experience (from USA) with the diigo site has been fairly speedy -- most of the pages load in 1-2 seconds for myself.

But it seems that some users are still complaining about the site performance. if you do experience slow pages, please let us know:

    -- your location
    -- which pages?
    -- when?
    - roughly how many seconds of loading time?
    - if you are accessing Diigo from outside of USA, how does our site speed compare with other US sites such as del.icio.us?

Our team is working hard to improve all aspects of the user experience, and we won't stop until it is perfect! Your help is greatly appreciated!
  • Wade Ren

We have carefully examined the system log and have not been able to see anything related to your experience. If you can recall anymore details, it would really help. Your experience could also be related to temporary poor connection such as packet loss between you and our server.

In the future, it would really help us greatly if the person reporting problems can do the following:

    - capture the screenshots of any error message you see
    - run command: "ping www.diigo.com -t" and let us know what you see.

    Thanks!

    Hans,

diigo full-text caching is done by server robot in the background, so if the page is password protected, we can not access it. also, we will not include the indexed page in the public search result if it is a private bookmark.

I'm asking since I can imagine several very different scenarios depending on how caching has been implemented and I would like to have enough of an understanding of the diigo implementation to adequately appreciate the security considerations that may apply.

As the group admin, you can just delete it.

Two ways to do delete / edit:

    1) check off any number of bookmarks and use "delete" in the "More Action" pull down menu

    2) You can find the delete function (along with edit, forward, etc..) when you move your mouse around the "blank space" in the right -hand side of each bookmark. You will see additional functions show up when you mouse over that space... give that a try.
