yes -- Tags should be space-separated, and are case-insensitive. To use a phrase as a single tag, either put quotation marks around the phrase, or use hyphen between words. Unless you combine those two words together, they cannot be edited together.

Ex Post Facto » Diigo as a Teaching Tool - 0 views

  • Diigo as a Teaching Tool I’ve recently started using a new social bookmarking service called Diigo to collect and share online resources with my students. (Diigo has features similar to del.icio.us, which I have also used for teaching, but it’s substantially more powerful.) The appealing thing about Diigo is that it allows me not only to create a list of links but also to highlight and annotate webpages. In other words, I can point to and comment on specific sections of a webpage. Diigo works really well for sharing, but I also think that it could be very useful for doing research online, because you can essentially highlight and annotate much as you do on paper. To get a better idea of what Diigo can do, take a look at my annotated collection of links on “Race, Culture, and Politics in the New South,” or access my links collections

Calling for educators / usecases! - 29 views

I will give a workshop to a group of educators this weekend in SF http://blog.diigo.com/2008/01/30/diigo-workshop-at-classroom20/

Love to hear from educators about their latest projects / experience with diigo in classroom

If you happen to be in the bay area and like to meet up, also drop me a note.

Thanks for some educators who responded. I shared your usecase with others and had a good workshop with a bunch of educators last weekend. Diigo is very well received.

It's quite interesting to see how teachers are exploring new technology to enrich their students' learning experience. We're glad that Diigo can play a role and hopefully makes some meaningful contribution. Our salute to all the educators who are working hard to make a difference!

Glad to hear more and more educators are discovering Diigo and exploring ways to incorporate Diigo into their curriculum. Please see comments below.

I think Diigo is great and has a lot of educational potential. I have several projects in mind, but the one I am delivering this semester is an essay alternative.

    > essays have long been criticized as an opportunity for students to plagiarize. An alternative exercise is to ask students to find the best website on a topic and then to annotate it with references to justify their choice. (they are of course banned from using wikipedia). This can then be followed with a moderation of other students work, etc...

==> Sorry - not clear what you're referring to here. Please elaborate more.

While I can use a private group for the exercise, maintaining an idea of who has done what is tricky. Thus I have asked the students to register with their student ID number - however, Diigo requires a letter for the first character in the username. What would be most useful is if I could create a class list and log the students in (if they do not already have accounts).. What I would do is give them username of "s" plus ID (s is for student). Their email is their ID@........... and I would initially set their password to their ID - telling them to change it to a memorable secret. Is there an ethical consent issue of signing others in? Is there facility to do it?

    > * While my institution is happy for applications like Diigo to be used in innovative teaching, it generally likes to host its teaching resources. Is there any possibility of licensing out a tailor made Diigo for different institutions. I imagine such a package would be sold with a license and would be hosted on a server in the institution and would allow group login possibly through some kind of centralized password system. Even public comments would only be visible to users of that institutionally hosted version.

==> Can discuss later once you folks are certain that diigo needs to be an integral part of your teaching resources.

How to Use Diigo « TrackSuit CEO (version 2.0) - 0 views

  • In preparation for our talk at SXSW and eBook, we’ve been compiling info on our blogging practices and favorite web apps. I have to say, one of the most useful and robust tools we use right now is Diigo. We use Diigo for TrackSuit CEO and for our corporate clients, we also use it for our personal bookmarking. I think our entire team has switched from Del.icio.us to Diigo, and not in a show of solidarity, but out of sheer convenience.

We verified - all should be working fine - annotations should be included during blogthis operation. Also, we check your user account - seem like you haven't done much annotations.

Can you please advise your blog platform & URL (post here or send us a private email to info AT diigo dot com)? Would also be helpful if you can give us a sample URL of your annotated page and a screenshot of your blogthis action, so we can double check?

    Thanks

Thanks for forwarding more info. We found out the problem -- your username is captialized and thus causing some problem. Should be ok now - please check.

    thanks for reporting.

Just FYI: diigolet inserts itself to the frame having largest area. However, web pages varies with browsers - that probably explain what you observe in some pages.

Still, can you please advise some sample URLs, so we can take a look? thanks

    > Any thoughts?

Your workaround is a good one - if you mark those pages private to start with, then your original intention is not to make it public in the first place. Forward to share is a good solution.

    >
    > Also - another request is that we should be able to highlight or sticky anything. ie if I select a widget or a graphic or a button, I should be able to attach a sticky note, donch think?

You should be able to highlight text, image, and flash / video. If you can highlight, then you should be able to add sticky note. We don't think it's a good idea to allow highlighting a widget...

    > Lastly - I love the Diigo toolbar and await one for Safari. In the meantime, I use the diigolet, but unlike the toolbar, I can't set a preference to mark all bookmarks private by default (which I would prefer to opt in to share, not opt out).

We're soooo busy with the new toolbars / site development - don't have plan to develop a Safari toolbar anytime soon (it's a lot of resources and ongoing commitment to support a new platform). Our new toolbars are really, really awesome. You may wish to explore using Firefox browser later? :-)

Bits O' NewMedia - Turn the Web Into a Shareable Notepad with Diigo - 0 views

  • Diigo builds on the MyStickies concept and fuses it with a social bookmarking system similar to Del.icio.us. The result is the best web-clipping/collaboration/bookmarking/thought-organizing tool out there. Once you've installed Diigo, you'll get a Diigo tool bar at the top of your browser. Diigo also offers a little javascript link you can drag into your links bar that essentially does the same thing without taking up as much room. Using the Diigo tool bar you can highlight text on a web page, add sticky notes, bookmark and tag a page, and see public comments made by other Diigo users.
  • But the feature that catapults Diigo into the stratosphere in my mind is its ability to search annotations.  If you do any blogging, I'm sure you know why this is such a helpful tool. Now I can annotate facts and figures on web pages and tag them. In the future, when I desperately need references and links for an article, I have a whole database of searchable stickies and bookmarks. When I return to the web pages I've annotated, there are all my notes and highlights. Also, since all of my Diigo data is out in the cloud, I can access it from any computer.
