Adding a Sticky Note to an Unmarked URL - 533 views

My Bookmarks interface allows us to preview and comment upon a URL, for example:
If we take a 'New window' view of the URL, then present the Diigolet toolbar, we have the Floating Sticky Note option.
If we compare:
a) a comment
b) a floating sticky note
c) a highlight as the foundation for a sticky note
then a) and/or b) may be preferable to c), in particular for URLs at which content (the subject of a highlight) may change.

Not that I can see, it could be a reasonable feature request. I imagine

How can I remove a comment from my Comment Wall?
I see the option to visit the offender's page, then flag that user as a spammer, but I don't wish to visit the offender's page.
Add an answer to http://help.diigo.com/ if you like.

tag editing dialogue does not hint to use "quotation mark enclosure" for multiple-word ... - 34 views
-
Low priority
= Example =
http://groups.diigo.com/cloud/orcrilin?sort=0
Five single-word tags were edited, expanded to multiple word tags.
Without the hint to enclose in quotation marks, the first of five edits succeeded. Where previously there was one word to the tag, Diigo showed multiple words for the one tag.
So, I proceeded to edit the other tags.
It was only after I navigated away from, then returned to the cloud, that I discovered the breakage.
= Suggestions =
At least: present the "… …" hint wherever it's required.
Ideally: sense the entry of multiple words, guide the user *as they type*.

consistent use of expressions (URL, link, page etc.) - 55 views
-
Low priority
Following on from http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/diigolet-get-annotated-link-7124
Now might be a good time to distinguish between
'Generate a short url (SRL) of this page'
and
'Get Annotated Link'
- the annotated link may be by coincidence (or by design) *also* a short URL
- certainly: when I first encountered an 'About…' page, I did expect to find there an option to easily share my URL-specific annotations with non-users of Diigo (that was long before I discovered the superior features of the toolbar).
----
More generally, slightly mixed expressions such as
This URL
About this URL
About this page
Get Annotated Link
may add to the potential for confusion.
The potential for discrepancies, and for confusion, is inherent to the multiple interface situation:
1. Diigolets for various browsers
2. Diigo Toolbar for Mozilla Firefox
3. Diigo Toolbar for Internet Explorer
4. www.diigo.com and thereabouts
Whilst we can't expect all Diigo help-related documentation, tutorials, videos etc. to be completely up-to-date with all interfaces to Diigo, we can reduce the learning curves for new users if expressions are reasonably standardised.
Personally, I favour
URL
more than 'link' or 'page'.
It's true that 'page' is a more human expression, but we might assume that
* most people who have an interest in Diigo and Diigo-like features will also have an understanding of the expression 'URL'.
A Diigo guide to standard use of expressions could be a fine neighbour to the Diigo API.
Not intending to spark a great debate, just food for thought…

2. In your series of tags, make the ultimate entry a word that causes the menu to disappear.
The second workaround is easier.

According to the information panel at a Group Tag Dictionary page, the *positive* intention is to *encourage*:
>> Option 3: The group owner can pre-define a set of group tags to encourage consistency.
(neither _enforce consistency_ nor _prevent submission_, both of which are *negative*).
So, for as long as the effect 'feels' negative, I tend to view this as a bug.

Fix confirmed: the 'Submit' button does now respond to a click even when the menu of suggested tags is present.

Diigo Community forum CAPTCHA failures in WebKit have become rare enough for me to treat them as negligible.
The failures that do occur are probably caused by the
poor choice of characters that are presented to the human.
Resolution of this topic 7109 leaves us with a few other CAPTCHA-related bugs:

Editing a multiple word group tag should "enclose all words" in the editing field - 38 views

In response to the 'Edit' click, when the editing field presents itself, "all words within the tag should be enclosed".

Enter " and " manually at each extreme of the string of words.

CAPTCHA failing repeatedly in Firefox 3.0.3 - 94 views

Using Firefox 3.0.3 on Mac OS X 10.5.5, I tried three or more times to post a new topic.
Each time, the CAPTCHA failed. I'm 100% certain I was entering the correct letters.
I brought Safari to the foreground and posted successfully first time; the result is at http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/group-bookmarks-click-a-group-tag-not-found-6987
Then again in Firefox I attempted to post this new topic but again it reported (wrongly)

group | Bookmarks | click a group tag | ~ not found - 30 views

The problem (or its symptoms) seem to have passed now but, for the record …
… an hour or so ago, not long before posting http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/group-tag-dictionary-6251#5 I noted that
* when command-clicking on any (private) group tag at http://groups.diigo.com/centrim/bookmark
* a new tab opened, as expected (using Firefox 3.0.3 on Mac OS X 10.5.5)
* however: the result said something about "…not found…".
(Sorry, I didn't note the exact error message.)
Could the issue be related to the fact that those particular tags (within the group tag dictionary for my private group) were recently created?
TIA
Graham -
The issue is still apparent and it does seem to occur only with recently added tags.
In detail:
1. http://groups.diigo.com/centrim/bookmark/tag/no_tag
2. edit one of the two bookmarks
3. overtype no_tag
4. type University of Brighton (forgetting to enclose as "University of Brighton") then Submit
5. simply click the Brighton tag

This bug recurred today in a private group.
It seems to bite sometimes, not always, for URLs that are not at the beginning (left hand extreme) of a line.
For this reason my habit, a precaution against the bug, is to use a line break before any hyperlink. -

I have what may be the same problem, or some other complication, with my group tag dictionary for CENTRIM - a private group.
Using Diigo toolbar 3.1.6.2 with Firefox 3.0.3 on Mac OS X 10.5.5.
A few pre-defined tags, some of which are multiple words.
For any bookmark - even bookmarks that do already have tags - when I click 'Edit', the dialogue:
* omits all existing tags
* presents 'no_tag'
and of greater concern:
* if I enter a tag (in lieu of no_tag) then click Submit, it effectively overwrites (loses) whatever tags may have existed beforehand. - ...2 more comments...

FWIW I sometimes lurk in irc://irc.freenode.net/#webkit, less frequently in irc://irc.freenode.net/#chromium and irc://irc.freenode.net/#chromium-dev
- the latter logged at http://echelog.matzon.dk/logs/ - I'm not a developer, simply interested in how things there may develop.
Thinking Chrome: presentation of tabs *above* the URL/address field is a radical departure from the norm. I have no idea whether people are embracing novelties such as that, but it's good to consider novelties that truly reflect users' requirements.
Thinking Diigo: let's be inspired by novel UIs. We might come up with something that makes Diigo universally (at least broadly) easier to use.
Totally off-topic from Diigo: I don't believe that all Google alternatives to the norm are acceptable. UI of Google Code was (maybe still is) particularly inferior. As a busy member of a project that was previously hosted by Google Code, I was terribly frustrated by obstacles, omissions and bugs in the UI - *really* not what I wanted from an issue tracker ;)
