CAPTCHA failing repeatedly in Firefox 3.0.3 - 94 views

    Using Firefox 3.0.3 on Mac OS X 10.5.5, I tried three or more times to post a new topic.

    Each time, the CAPTCHA failed. I'm 100% certain I was entering the correct letters.

    I brought Safari to the foreground and posted successfully first time; the result is at http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/group-bookmarks-click-a-group-tag-not-found-6987

    Then again in Firefox I attempted to post this new topic but again it reported (wrongly)

    > Please enter the correct words.

    so now I'm using Safari…

    And again, three times in a row my CATCHA entry is rejected whilst using Firefox, and I am human :) and I am 100% certain that I am entering the four characters correctly.

    We knew there was a problem here, but it's hard to reproduce here. However, we will try to follow the bug and find the solution.

    The first three or four attempts in Firefox to submit http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/mis-counts-of-bookmarks-and-readers-at-reader-community-and-at-site-community-7157 failed.

    Then, I disabled Adblock Plus (a recent addition to my Firefox). The next attempt to submit failed (I had a sense that it might) but the subsequent attempt† succeeded.

    † Probably, the first time that the page had loaded without Adblock Plus.

    PostScript: I did subsequently add (then delete) a new topic with Adblock Plus enabled.

    Cross-referencing this Firefox-related topic with a comparable Safari-related topic http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/captcha-failing-in-safari-7109 I might *guess* that failures in Safari (far less frequent) were associated with PithHelmet or some other criterion.

    Update: using Mac OS X 10.5.5, Firefox 3.0.3, Adblock Plus enabled, multiple tabs:

    * in the left-most tab, composing a reply to a different topic

    * in the right-most tab, testing in relation to that topic

    * in the right-most tab, CAPTCHA failed a few times

    * most likely using command-] and command-[ to navigate tabs

    * eventually CAPTCHA worked properly (resulting in a new topic 'test' within this forum, deleted very shortly after posting)

    * returning to the left-most tab, I posted http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/presence-of-drop-down-menu-of-tags-suggestions-prevents-use-of-submit-button-7113#4 without difficulty.

    Update: the problem is not limited to group forums. Failures occur similarly in the friend request routine.

    Currently using Firefox 3.0.3. in Mac OS X 10.5.5 and again I'm suspecting Adblock Plus:

    1. first few attempts to submit a friend request failed

    2. disabled Adblock Plus

    3. refreshed the CAPTCHA

    4. submitted the friend request - success.

    FWIW I can recommend reCAPTCHA.

    It has the added benefit of being more accessible that what's currently used for Diigo; reCAPTCHA offers an audio alternative to the visual CAPTCHA.
