For those of us born before 1990, the rigours of social media can seem like a chore. Though most business owners would agree that a presence on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest is a necessity in today's competitive market, the question still looms: Who's going to do all the tweeting and posting and pinning?

Interesting article. They may have written the headline just to catch one's attention, but I don't agree that it has to do with your age. I think whomever gets the position of handling the company's social media should be an articulate writer, have strong business etiquette, and a strong understanding of the company's objectives and corporate social responsibility. This can be either a 22-year old or a 50-year old. I don't think age is the question here. Perhaps the headline writer had limited space to work with : )

OTTAWA - Tony Clement may be king of social media in political circles on Parliament Hill, but he didn't get to be mayor of his own Twitter town hall. During an online chat on the subject of open government, the Treasury Board president, who is a prolific tweeter, had a ghostwriter doing most of the work for him.

I thought this was an interesting article connecting the social media platform of twitter with the political world.

Been reading up on big data since the first mashup and found this article on big data being our generation's civil rights issue. Personalization is being touted as the future but, as this article states, is it just another word for discrimination as well?

The theme of cyber bullying seems to be unfortunately making headlines in every newspaper, I thought it would be interesting to explore this article which explores the technologies behind virtual bullying and the real like consequences that come from it. 

Building off of Yates article...Union Square Ventures recently posted an opening for an investment analyst. Instead of asking for résumés, the New York venture-capital firm asked applicants to send links representing their "Web presence," such as a Twitter account or Tumblr blog. Something to think about when applying for internships and jobs in the future!

I agree with you Rya. While I appreciate such innovation, it's difficult for me to comprehend the privacy issues related with such a thing. Doesn't LinkedIn suffice anymore?

I agree with both of your comments Rya and Raman. There really does seem to be a privacy issue here. I suppose with all the recent competition for work, employers are looking for ways to distinguish candidates (doesn't seem fair). Although we started off building our "online presence" for personal reasons, there appears to be a need to build a public professional presence as well. Perhaps the trick is to keep your personal account private to maintain our sense of privacy and start building an online professional profile that is public. Blogging about a professionally related topic, linking field-specific articles etc. might be the way to get noticed.

News organizations sometimes post content that was apparently captured by citizen eyewitnesses without any clear attribution as to the original producer. Citizens are posting copyrighted material without permission. And the creator of some material cannot be identified. All this creates the potential for news to be manufactured, or even falsified, without giving audiences much ability to know who produced it or how to verify it.

10% of business reviews will be fake by 2014 -- I found this shocking! Sure, don't believe everything you read online but 10 per cent? If you're a communications manager relying on reviews to promote your company or build trust among customers, how do you maintain your integrity if this kind of statistic is floating around?

Really interesting article about a new app that will lock cell phone texts/phone calls to prevent digital eavesdropping/monitoring. I think it will be interesting to see how this plays out and what the long term affects/reaction (both socially and legally) will be. "The legal barrier for eavesdropping has never been lower. We've learned to be comfortable with it because, for the most part, we've never had any means of escape, but Silent Circle could change that."

Interesting article about how Apple is now on a course similar to other techno companies -- "tweaking" their products and using timely release dates to maximize profits. But will they be able to innovate?

Twitter posted this "Best Practices for journalists" on their blog. Twitter wasn't 'meant' or built to be a tool for professional communicators but has obviously been used as such since its creation. I just found it really interesting that the tool is telling the storyteller how to do his/her job. I wonder why Twitter as an organization felt the need to post this best practices for journalists. What is the communication strategy here? Do they hope to change Twitter practices? Bring in more would-be journalists on the site? They even include quantitative research and examples to support their recommendations!

This article speaks to how direct marketing concepts can be altered and applied to the digital realm. I thought the paragraph about real-time data flow was the most relevant to our course work.

This an interesting article to follow up my groups presentation this morning on Communication and Organization. We addressed so barriers for remote workers and this piece brings up some interesting advantages to being a remote worker. The use of tools section is particularly relevant to our in-class activity as well.

I know many of us place high value on online customer reviews. Think of this site as the "Urban Spoon" of software and apps. You can browse technologies by theme (creative, customers, team, productivity etc.) view screen shots and read user reviews. You can also browse compiled lists of technologies posted by users of the site. Ex. "how I manage my retail business" or "28 ideas for an awesome office" This site might be helpful exploring technologies for our research paper!

We've been talking about Wente in class so much recently, I thought it would be good to take a look at an article she wrote concerning a topic we are all familiar with: university. Interesting to see the rhetorical devices at play.

I'm still learning about SEO but I'm really interested in its effect on website content. Planning keywords into content, especially on news articles, can be dangerous to the art of writing.

Looking at how a politician turns to reddit to see legislative advice. Showing how technology/social media is being used to engage the public on political issues- even the future of their governance.

Reading about this has given me a new respect for LinkedIn. It seems like it's the new Facebook (in terms of being a media darling). It also made me think about being a "prosumer" and how LinkedIn creates a win-win situation for both recruiters and users.

To eliminate cheating while writing tests for an online course, several top U.S. Universities have hired online "proctors" who can watch you take an online exam via webcam. Hmmm...
