Why Remote Workers Are More (Yes, More) Engaged - 0 views

  •
This an interesting article to follow up my groups presentation this morning on Communication and Organization. We addressed so barriers for remote workers and this piece brings up some interesting advantages to being a remote worker. The use of tools section is particularly relevant to our in-class activity as well.

Best Software & App Ratings - BestVendor.com - 1 views

I know many of us place high value on online customer reviews. Think of this site as the "Urban Spoon" of software and apps. You can browse technologies by theme (creative, customers, team, productivity etc.) view screen shots and read user reviews. You can also browse compiled lists of technologies posted by users of the site. Ex. "how I manage my retail business" or "28 ideas for an awesome office" This site might be helpful exploring technologies for our research paper!

When Phones Come Out Long Before the Turkey - NYTimes.com - 2 views

Really interesting how people are using their digital devices to tell their stories and capture memories. A common social trend in my opinion.

CBC - Doc Zone - Episode - Facebook Follies - 0 views

  •
This is a documentary and brief article about some of the dangers of sharing personal information on social media. I haven't watched it yet, but I think it looks pretty relevant to what we discussed in class on Monday, so it is on my "to do" list

Creating the Next New App - 0 views

  •
My 89 year old grandpa of all people tipped me on to this article. Interesting because much of the action happens at Ryersons Digital Media Zone. Also, for those of you who heard my educative speech about apps - this is a somewhat complementary article.

Interesting article showing how the internet is still a difficult place to regulate and also relates to building online identity; the topic I am doing for my educative speech.

Free video chat API and Widgets | TokBox - 0 views

  •
In my previous job, we used virtual conferencing on a daily basis. As a media communications company, we were seeking the best conferencing software out there, and we finally found it: Open-tok (tokbox) Please check this page out as it may change your virtual communication lives in your work or home environments! Details: "This is a unique video conferencing service that lets your audience (up to 200 people per conference) send you video questions, really making your virtual conference feel like a face-to-face one. Video questions can be sent in advance of the meeting, so presenters can review them and decide if they want to make the video public. Presenters can also put meeting participants on screen and move them off at any time."

Facebook & Work: Will Friending Your Manager Help Your Career? Read more: http://busin... - 0 views

  •
Interesting article about the increasing blend of work life and personal life. I'm not sure if I'd advocate adding a friend on Facebook - while I can control my own posts I'm not sure I can trust that I'd be able to manage my Facebook in a way that would absolutely ensure a manager wouldn't see an undesirable post from someone else before I had time to delete it.

What is StumbleUpon? | StumbleUpon.com - 0 views

  •
One of my favourite websites for everything that has to do with advertising, photography, and video...Stumble helps you easily discover new and interesting stuff on the Web. Tell them what you like, and they'll introduce you to amazing web pages, videos, photos and more that you wouldn't have found on your own.

Mobile Email Newsletters (Jakob Nielsen's Alertbox) - 0 views

  •
This in an interesting study about newsletters and usability issues on a mobile platform, that came to me via some of my Linkedin contacts. I have been responsible for the office newsletter in several workplaces and making the newsletter accessible via mobile phones is definitely something to think about especially as more companies are providing smartphones for employees.

Why a 22-year-old shouldn't be handling your social media - 1 views

  •
For those of us born before 1990, the rigours of social media can seem like a chore. Though most business owners would agree that a presence on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest is a necessity in today's competitive market, the question still looms: Who's going to do all the tweeting and posting and pinning?
  •
Interesting article. They may have written the headline just to catch one's attention, but I don't agree that it has to do with your age. I think whomever gets the position of handling the company's social media should be an articulate writer, have strong business etiquette, and a strong understanding of the company's objectives and corporate social responsibility. This can be either a 22-year old or a 50-year old. I don't think age is the question here. Perhaps the headline writer had limited space to work with : )

Foxconn's Taiyuan plant on riot, facilities damaged - 0 views

  •
Foxconn, which makes high tech parts for companies such as Apple, has been criticized for the poor conditions of its factory complexes. Breaking news of this riot forces me to wonder: "My iPhone, at what cost?" This is purely speculation, but could consumer demand for the iPhone 5 be exacerbating supply problems?

Unmasking Reddit's Violentacrez, The Biggest Troll on the Web - 0 views

  •
Gawker's Adrian Chen tracks down the identity of reddit.com's violentacrez. I'd never heard of this person, but the headline grabbed my attention. The article has some really great insight into how reddit is run and the role of moderators on the sites boards. Also an interesting read in regards to the politics of online identity protection and the role of anonymity in online communications.

Circa News App - 0 views

The Circa app for news just launched and I'm already pretty obsessed with it. For my personal life I love this because it is a quick easy way to catch up on daily news. From a communication perspective it makes us rethink what is essential to a news story. Instead of lengthy (or even short) news stories, Circa packages up facts, quotes and photos into a very easy to read format. This app speaks to our constant need for information.

Facebook Couple Pages - 0 views

  •
Facebook is now automatically creating 'couple' pages for anyone who is linked to another person through relationship status. There is no opt out option and Facebook pulls in any pictures or check in's in which you have both been tagged. I'm not sure if I'm more bothered by the gross invasion of privacy or the fact that Facebook thinks we would be interested in seeing couples pages (uh no).
  •
    wow.....thats scary
  •
I almost posted the same topic. Yes, it is scary, especially since I found my profile listed on this new page. Very intrusive. Here's a similar article: http://www.cnn.com/2012/11/12/tech/social-media/facebook-couples-pages/

4 things PR pros should never say to reporters - 3 views

  •
Tthis is a helpful read to squash some bad PR habits.
  •
This one really grabbed my attention Corinne! I was really expecting to see the phrase, "I don't know" in there as well, but maybe that one is too obvious. In the few jobs I've had that required speaking to the media, it was really stressed to never say "I don't know," even if you really didn't know how to answer the question.
