This an interesting article to follow up my groups presentation this morning on Communication and Organization. We addressed so barriers for remote workers and this piece brings up some interesting advantages to being a remote worker. The use of tools section is particularly relevant to our in-class activity as well.

You can now promote your posts onto your friends' news feeds by paying Facebook to do it. What does this change mean for users? I see this being used for promoting when people enter contests eventually. What will this mean for business exposure?

Watch this beautiful video of Nuit Blanche 2012. It makes me regret not going this year. This got me thinking about video as a medium to build brand value. How could Nuit Blanche use this video (or video in general) to capture the imagination of Torontonians and get more people out on the street and enjoy this event?

.A very topical article for next week's class in "The Virtual Organization" regarding the changing workplace due to digital technologies.Suprisingly, this article reveals that only 20 of the world fortune 500 companies have twitter accounts. Enjoy. 

10% of business reviews will be fake by 2014 -- I found this shocking! Sure, don't believe everything you read online but 10 per cent? If you're a communications manager relying on reviews to promote your company or build trust among customers, how do you maintain your integrity if this kind of statistic is floating around?

I know many of us place high value on online customer reviews. Think of this site as the "Urban Spoon" of software and apps. You can browse technologies by theme (creative, customers, team, productivity etc.) view screen shots and read user reviews. You can also browse compiled lists of technologies posted by users of the site. Ex. "how I manage my retail business" or "28 ideas for an awesome office" This site might be helpful exploring technologies for our research paper!

Been reading up on big data since the first mashup and found this article on big data being our generation's civil rights issue. Personalization is being touted as the future but, as this article states, is it just another word for discrimination as well?

PR Daily shared a list of 25 quotes regarding the power of social networking. I think this list is pretty fitting after our MPC Evening with Industry event, and with all of us looking for or landing internships. I particularly liked this one: "Network continually - 85 percent of all jobs are filled through contacts & personal references." 

In my previous job, we used virtual conferencing on a daily basis. As a media communications company, we were seeking the best conferencing software out there, and we finally found it: Open-tok (tokbox) Please check this page out as it may change your virtual communication lives in your work or home environments! In light of our discussion this week on the social web, this article challenges the dominant history of the internet suggesting that the true social web started in the 1990s with link sharing. Today, the vast trove of social traffic is essentially invisible to most analytic programs. The author calls it the "DARK SOCIAL."

I am not pushing either side of this argument but I thought this documentary did a really good job of illustrating Baym's notion of how there is a discourse of fear surrounding technology.

This short article looks at how non-profits are using new channels like instagram to raise awareness about their issues. This article focuses on an instagram diary created by the UK Charity WaterAid. 

While writing my blog, I found this article which backed up an opinion I had about the use of technology. This is a blog written by an elementary school teacher in California. He writes about using technology in the classroom -- that it should be for learning and not for technology's sake. He brings up some interesting examples and scenarios.

It's amazing that we repeatedly face this debate. Educators at all levels are continually facing a technologically determinist position from the public, technology companies and policy makers. But the writer of this post illustrates really well, that it's how technology is used that's important. Thanks for the great post.

This is perhaps more relevant to our Communications theory class, or even for those of us in the Presentation class, but regardless I found this to be a really concise and interesting way of breaking down communication rhetorical strategies in the political realm.

After reading some of the articles for this week this article seemed relevant as it looks at the effects our mobile technology and the need to be always connected is starting to have on consumers.

Twitter posted this "Best Practices for journalists" on their blog. Twitter wasn't 'meant' or built to be a tool for professional communicators but has obviously been used as such since its creation. I just found it really interesting that the tool is telling the storyteller how to do his/her job. I wonder why Twitter as an organization felt the need to post this best practices for journalists. What is the communication strategy here? Do they hope to change Twitter practices? Bring in more would-be journalists on the site? They even include quantitative research and examples to support their recommendations!

This blog post from the Harvard Business Review fits perfectly into the readings from this past week for PC8005. It speaks to the importance of existing in two systems: local market and global corporation. Great real-world examples are provided.

Really interesting article about a new app that will lock cell phone texts/phone calls to prevent digital eavesdropping/monitoring. I think it will be interesting to see how this plays out and what the long term affects/reaction (both socially and legally) will be. "The legal barrier for eavesdropping has never been lower. We've learned to be comfortable with it because, for the most part, we've never had any means of escape, but Silent Circle could change that."

This website is brilliant. Professional-looking websites are looking more and more alike these days. This one, however, looks like nothing I've ever seen and illustrates how skillful storytelling, good visual skills, and tech savvy come together to read like a window into two peoples lives. What this website is about is a pleasant surprise at the end!
