ENDOGENOUS SEX HORMONES, BLOOD PRESSURE CHANGE, AND RISK OF HYPERTENSION IN POSTMENOPAU... - 0 views

  • Among postmenopausal women, serum T was elevated in hypertensive participants [9, 11, 12], and total T, free T, and DHEA were positively correlated with SBP
  • T and DHEA were attenuated by adjustment for BMI, reflecting either a confounding or a mediating effect of obesity
  • SHBG concentration was inversely associated with risk of hypertension and longitudinal rise of BP over time
  • ...8 more annotations...
  • SHBG has been postulated as a marker for insulin resistance
  • In vitro studies showed that insulin inhibits SHBG production from hepatoma cells
  • In intervention studies, successful weight loss and weight maintenance increased SHBG in men with obesity
  • E2 may also induce insulin resistance and thereafter tend to raise BP.
  • strong association between E2 and measures of insulin resistance in postmenopausal women, independent of adiposity
  • In postmenopausal women that received hormone replacement therapy, estrogen therapy increased mononuclear cell secretion of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)
  • estrone levels were positively associated with inflammatory markers in postmenopausal women
  • higher baseline concentrations of endogenous E2, total and bioavailable T, and DHEA and lower concentration of SHBG were associated with a higher incidence of hypertension and a greater increase in BP during follow-up
  •
Data from MESA study finds that increasing endogenous Estradiol, Total and free Testosterone, DHEA, and lower SHBG were associated with hypertension in postmenopausal women.

Hyperandrogenism sensitizes mononuclear cells to promote glucose-induced inflammation i... - 0 views

  •
Interesting study finds hyperandrogenism stimulates excessive inflammatory response to glucose intake.  This study was done in otherwise healthy women not in women with PCOS.  The inflammatory cytokine production was via NF-KappaB activation.  Again, this has negative implications in women being doped with Testosterone.

Androgen therapy and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease - 0 views

  • In women, it is much clearer that androgen excess is linked to the burden of CVD risk factors
  • insulin resistance is a consequence of androgen effects
  • Women with PCOS have a sustained exposure to high physiologic androgen levels. This condition is associated with endothelial dysfunction, obesity and metabolic abnormalities such as insulin resistance and dyslipidaemia
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • Further evidence of a link between high androgen levels and CVD or CVD risk factors is observed in women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
  • For T treatment in aging women, the current data would suggest androgen excess has adverse effects on CVD risk factors, especially in women with diabetes
  • androgen use and abuse is increasing in our society, either for therapeutic or recreational reasons
  • For men, exogenous T treatment appears largely beneficial
  •
I love these review articles that highlight the metabolic differences of hormones in women versus men.  The medical community as a whole doesn't seem to get this at all.  The marketing-based medical community doesn't either.

Testosterone therapy for reduced libido in women - 0 views

  •
Testosterone and libido in women: the data is limited.  The data that links low T in women to low libido is not present.  That questions the whole low T, libido theory in women.

Comparison of salivary versus serum testos... [Menopause. 2009 Jul-Aug] - PubMed - NCBI - 0 views

  •
this study looked at salivary testosterone to serum testosterone and found poor correlation.  One major problem with this study is the significantly smaller amount (10 fold) of testosterone in women than men in healthy individuals.  This study took place in postmenopausal women, which would have significantly lower levels than healthy women.  They also don't discuss the pitfalls of equilibrium dialysis of serum free testosterone.  Another major flaw is the mere logic of looking at serum for tissue activity.   What is the correlation between serum levels and tissue activity.  There is tremendous assumptions being undertaken that serum levels of testosterone whether total or free translate to genomic or non-genomic signaling.  I also wonder if newer techniques using Mass Spec can better detect the typically pico levels of testosterone in women's saliva?  This study does nothing to dissuade the use of salivary testing.

Black women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) have increased risk for metabolic syn... - 0 views

  •
The medical field continues to be amazed that people are different. More, that different people groups are different.  This study found that black women with PCOS have an elevated risk of metabolic syndrome when compared to white women with PCOS.  Body weight was a variable that was controlled for.  This was a retrospective study.

Effects of androgen supplementation of hormone... [Fertil Steril. 2001] - PubMed - NCBI - 0 views

  •
Testosterone therapy in post menopausal women appears to have adverse cardiovascular effects in women.  The negative effects were an increase in Pulsatility index and adverse change in lipid profiles.  This seemed to counter the positive effects by estrogen.  Others have proposed that combination E2 and T therapy hide the negative effects of testosterone on CV health in women.

Women with elevated androgens, Testosterone and androstenedione, are at higher risk of preeclampsia.  This translates to a higher risk of CVD in women later in life, post pregnancy.  This fits with other literature that CVD is linearly associated with a rising Testosterone.  This has been found in caucasian and black women.

The association between hyperandrogenemia and the metabolic syndrome in morbidly obese ... - 0 views

  • a significant inverse relationship between HA and HDL-cholesterol levels which is in accordance with previous studies of women with PCOS
  • HA was associated with 61 % increased adjusted odds of MetS, and that this association was mainly driven by increased odds of dysglycemia and dyslipidemia
  • the prevalences of MetS, PCOS and HA were high among morbidly obese women <50 years of age
  • ...3 more annotations...
  • Compared to women without HA, those with HA had significantly higher odds of having the MetS, which was mainly explained by the associations between HA and the lipid- and glucose components of the MetS
  • FTI-blood test might add value to the cardiovascular risk assessment of premenopausal women with morbid obesity
  • We calculated the free testosterone index (FTI) using the formula: FTI = 100 x serum testosterone (nmol/L) / sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG, nmol/L)
  •
Another study that finds hyperandrogenism in women is associated with increased Metabolic Syndrome.  This study found obesity was associated with increased hyperandrogegism and Metabolic Syndrome irregardless of PCOS diagnosis or not.

Low free testosterone is associated wit... [Geriatr Gerontol Int. 2014] - PubMed - NCBI - 0 views

  •
Low free Testosterone associated muscle loss in Japanese women.  This points to other studies that low T can cause problems in women--in this case muscle loss.  Like many things, Testosterone in women is likely a "U" shaped curve of function: low and high are bad with physiologic therapy good.

New study finds "modest" association between Testosterone, DHEA, and FSH with libido, masturbation, and climax in women.  The author describes them as "subtle".  The association was not statistically significant.  The study found a great association with relationships than with Testosterone. This study points out the complexity that is libido in women.  It also casts doubt on the massive Testosterone push in women with little documented data.

Urinary estrogen metabolites in women at high risk for breast cancer - 0 views

  • obesity has also been linked to preferential estrogen metabolism via the 16-alpha-hydroxylation pathway; thus, a prediction of the mechanism by which obesity could increase breast cancer risk would be through a lowering of the 2:16 ratio in favor of the 16 pathway
  • increased BMI was associated with a lower 2:16 OHE ratio
  • Our data show a significant association between alcohol use, defined as at least one drink per day or an average of seven per week, and 2:16 OHE ratio
  • ...10 more annotations...
  • An alcohol-induced rise in estrogens as a consequence of alcohol catabolism in the liver has been reported
  • The only study that looked at the association between alcohol and wine consumption in healthy women did not report a clear association
  • smoking has been reported to increase induction of the 2-hydroxylation metabolic pathway (24). However, the few epidemiological studies conducted on healthy women showed no difference in estrogen metabolites with smoking status (22) or smoking dose (20), in line with our findings.
  • Family history of a first-degree family member with breast cancer confers a 2- to 4-fold risk of developing breast cancer
  • 16% of breast cancers are due to unidentified hereditary factors
  • Estrogen metabolism occurs through enzymes whose activity is determined by the presence of specific genetic polymorphisms, thus can be defined as unique to each individual.
  • the metabolism is also influenced by a number of environmental factors, which change over a lifetime
  • significantly lower 2:16 OHE ratio in women who have known breast cancer risk factors compared with healthy women
  • There was an additional significant association specifically with BMI and alcohol use, which also supports the evidence that these factors affect estrogen metabolism
  • Profiling estrogen metabolites may identify women who are more likely to develop breast cancer within a population of women with known risk factors
  •
urinary estrogen metabolites shown to provide insight into breast cancer risk.  This study suggested that a low 2:16 OHE ratio increase breast cancer risk.

Time that physicians start following the science.  Study using data from the Multi-ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis was used to assess hormones and fatty liver in men and women.  Increasing bioavailable Testosterone levels in women was found to be associated with increasing fatty liver in post-menopausal women.  The opposite was found to be true in men.  Higher Estradiol levels were found to be associated with increased fatty liver in both sexes.  However, the statistical significance was higher with men.  Higher SHBG was associated with lower fatty liver incidence in men.

Benefit of A Clinical Hypnotherapist for Women - Trina Blum - Medium - 0 views

  •
Hypnotherapy in our opinion is a self belief to overcome a problem. We personally believe that hypnosis will be optimally effective when the person is highly motivated to overcome his problem and when the hypnotherapist is well trained in general considerations relating to the treatment of their particular problem and hypnosis both. Some patients seem to have higher native hypnotic capacity and talent that may allow them to benefit more efficiently from hypnosis. For women there are many benefits of a clinical hypnotherapist for women
