Data from MESA study finds that increasing endogenous Estradiol, Total and free Testosterone, DHEA, and lower SHBG were associated with hypertension in postmenopausal women.

Interesting study finds hyperandrogenism stimulates excessive inflammatory response to glucose intake.  This study was done in otherwise healthy women not in women with PCOS.  The inflammatory cytokine production was via NF-KappaB activation.  Again, this has negative implications in women being doped with Testosterone.

I love these review articles that highlight the metabolic differences of hormones in women versus men.  The medical community as a whole doesn't seem to get this at all.  The marketing-based medical community doesn't either.

Testosterone and libido in women: the data is limited.  The data that links low T in women to low libido is not present.  That questions the whole low T, libido theory in women.

this study looked at salivary testosterone to serum testosterone and found poor correlation.  One major problem with this study is the significantly smaller amount (10 fold) of testosterone in women than men in healthy individuals.  This study took place in postmenopausal women, which would have significantly lower levels than healthy women.  They also don't discuss the pitfalls of equilibrium dialysis of serum free testosterone.  Another major flaw is the mere logic of looking at serum for tissue activity.   What is the correlation between serum levels and tissue activity.  There is tremendous assumptions being undertaken that serum levels of testosterone whether total or free translate to genomic or non-genomic signaling.  I also wonder if newer techniques using Mass Spec can better detect the typically pico levels of testosterone in women's saliva?  This study does nothing to dissuade the use of salivary testing.

The medical field continues to be amazed that people are different. More, that different people groups are different.  This study found that black women with PCOS have an elevated risk of metabolic syndrome when compared to white women with PCOS.  Body weight was a variable that was controlled for.  This was a retrospective study.

review of the literature finds that Testosterone therapy in women with low libido improves sexual activity without CVD and breast cancer risk in postmenopausal women.  Post menopause is a time associated with an increased risk of CVD in women.

Testosterone therapy in post menopausal women appears to have adverse cardiovascular effects in women.  The negative effects were an increase in Pulsatility index and adverse change in lipid profiles.  This seemed to counter the positive effects by estrogen.  Others have proposed that combination E2 and T therapy hide the negative effects of testosterone on CV health in women.

Women with elevated androgens, Testosterone and androstenedione, are at higher risk of preeclampsia.  This translates to a higher risk of CVD in women later in life, post pregnancy.  This fits with other literature that CVD is linearly associated with a rising Testosterone.  This has been found in caucasian and black women.

Another study that finds hyperandrogenism in women is associated with increased Metabolic Syndrome.  This study found obesity was associated with increased hyperandrogegism and Metabolic Syndrome irregardless of PCOS diagnosis or not.

Study looked at serum and salivary obesity in women: found that low cortisol was found in anorexia and class I obese women compared to normal weight women and that class II obesity was associated with hypercortisolism.

Low free Testosterone associated muscle loss in Japanese women.  This points to other studies that low T can cause problems in women--in this case muscle loss.  Like many things, Testosterone in women is likely a "U" shaped curve of function: low and high are bad with physiologic therapy good.

New study finds "modest" association between Testosterone, DHEA, and FSH with libido, masturbation, and climax in women.  The author describes them as "subtle".  The association was not statistically significant.  The study found a great association with relationships than with Testosterone. This study points out the complexity that is libido in women.  It also casts doubt on the massive Testosterone push in women with little documented data.

urinary estrogen metabolites shown to provide insight into breast cancer risk.  This study suggested that a low 2:16 OHE ratio increase breast cancer risk.

Time that physicians start following the science.  Study using data from the Multi-ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis was used to assess hormones and fatty liver in men and women.  Increasing bioavailable Testosterone levels in women was found to be associated with increasing fatty liver in post-menopausal women.  The opposite was found to be true in men.  Higher Estradiol levels were found to be associated with increased fatty liver in both sexes.  However, the statistical significance was higher with men.  Higher SHBG was associated with lower fatty liver incidence in men.  

Women with hot flashes and night sweats have increased cardiovascular risk compared to women that do not.

High HDL found to actually increase cardiovascular risk in men and women. Peak benefit is found at 58 mg/dl and 77 mg/dl for men and women respectively. Higher levels of HDL >90 increased risk and all-cause mortality in men and women.
