    Crap detection is so important, especially in these days of more open knowledge, where there are so, so many avenues to get information, but not many obvious ways to know what is "good" information and what "bad".

    We are not aware of all the mistaken information that is online and that's why crap detection is so important.

    I strongly disagree with their list of 'crap' detecting guidelines. "Credentials"? "Reputable"? Fact or Fiction"? You gotta be kidding me. Most credentialed people I know are lost in the sea of institutionalized learning, and with it comes their arrogance that they know better - they don't. Those known as reputable are not walking the bleeding edge of knowledge. And fact/fiction is turning inside out as we begin to see more and more historical fictional information is now shown to be based in fact. ... LOL! ... (Not that I have an emotional attachment to this issue.) ;) ;)

    Libraries have long been a source of mostly free information for many people dating back to the Library of Alexandria. Early libraries used scrolls, but Tod Colgrove suggests that more learning may have taken place via person to person learning in those spaces, then from the scrolls themselves. 2000 years later, although we have vastly upgraded the technology and have an abundance of information at our fingertips, right now we are still learning from each other by taking part in this MOOC and sharing our information and knowledge so that we can learn from each other. Another important point Colgrove makes is that as long as librarians can come up with cutting edge ways to share knowledge, there will be a place for libraries in our schools and public places.

    Ad Huikeshoven , I do agree with you. There is nothing new with social learning. In the african context,that was the way of learning through informal gatherings, story tellings around fire or while drinking some traditional beer. Otherwise we are just acknowledging that, there is plenty to learn from each other and through each other. The wheel can not be reinvented for sure.

It´s important to know your rights on the street as well as on the internet, does anyone know a good resource for reading about what our rights are on the internet? Besides that, does the internet give us more freedom or does it take it away by monitoring us and making our personal profiles into data? I think that was the transcending question and dilemma which the first module presented, so do we accept the internet as an oxymoron, if not what is happening in the world inregards to being able to opt out from being monitored and used as a statistic and still enjoy the benefits of internet.

    The wonderful blog, Hack Library School, has recently posted a piece on open access publishing. This piece is a great overview, which covers many of the basic concepts covered in Module 6. The article discusses what open access is (and what it isn't) and some of the biggest discussion points on the issue today. It's a great overview and well worth the read if you want an overview or a refresher on the topic!

    This blog covers a lot of relevant concepts related to OA, but a finer point need to be clarified. Regarding Google Scholar, not everything retrieved from GS is OA. GS is a web crowler, it crows wherever it is allowed, including references and citations to articles behind paywalls. On the other hand, many librarians are working to make their paid journals subscriptions available to their faculty and students via Google Scholar. So when faculty/students are on their universities' network, they can search GS, find articles from journals. If their library subscribes to that journal, there is a good chance a link to the full text will be available.

    I agree with the point that "findability" for green OA articles is a current problem. We need a PubMed or Web of Science for green OA articles!
