Insect photographer squashed by copyright infringement (Wired UK) - 0 views

"Here is a true story about how copyright infringement costs [a] small photography business thousands of dollars every year. Or, maybe it isn't. It could also be a true story of how copyright infringement earns thousands of dollars every year. I can't be sure."

How To Protect Your Ideas in the Digital Age (Seth Godin) - 4 views

  •
If we're in the idea business, how to protect those ideas? One way is to misuse trademark law. With the help of search engines, greedy lawyers who charge by the letter are busy sending claim letters to anyone who even comes close to using a word or phrase they believe their client 'owns'.

Nature Communications goes open access (Wired UK) - 0 views

  •
Nature Communications has announced it will go open access only from 20 October in a bid to show the world that quality papers do not have to be paid for.
  •
I've chosen to link to the article on Wired which discusses the move as the explanation is easier for those who (like me!) have little experience of academic journals to understand. One of the most important points I've taken from reading this article (and the PDF study explaining the reasons for the move to Open Access, which is linked from the article) is that to date, articles which have previously been published to Nature Communications using the OA model have earned more citations than those published under a subscription model. I'm interested to learn more about the mentioned Creative Commons 4.0 license, which I'm not yet familiar with. If anyone with experience using (or publishing to) academic journals would like to add any relevant points to the potential impact of the magazine's choice to go OA, I would really appreciate the insight!

This Is What Happens When A Kid Leaves Traditional Education - 4 views

  •
"Logan Laplante is a 13 year-old boy who was taken out of the education system to be home schooled instead. Not only was he home schooled, but Logan had the ability to tailor his education to his interests and also his style of learning, something traditional education does not offer." I realise this article (and the video on which the article is based) does not fall neatly into any category we've studied yet, though I hope many of you may find it as interesting and inspiring as I have. At core, this is about "hacking" the educational system. As Logan explains, his methods can be applied in mainstream schooling (or indeed for anyone interested in lifelong/lifewide education). There's also the element of "participatory culture" embedded in the production of this video: Logan is sharing his experiences, allowing others to comment and contribute so that he might learn as others are learning from him.

Why are people so upset about the NSA having the ability to look through their electron... - 1 views

A really interesting view about the lack of privacy from the viewpoint of a lawyer in the USA who is concerned about privacy and client confidentiality. This really opened my eyes to a different viewpoint, that lawyers have to maintain privacy to the best of their ability. Knowing that confidential client data could be accessed has a significant effect on whether law practioners can perform their role effectively.

How a Radical New Teaching Method Could Unleash a Generation of Geniuses | Business | W... - 4 views

This is an excellent article which explains how Sugata Mitra's teaching models helped to transform a failing school in Mexico. It's a story which completely changed my attitude to learning and education and inspired me to discover as much as possible about cloud-based and student-centred learning.
