Hotel Network Security: A Study of Computer Networks in U.S. Hotels - Cornell School of... - 3 views

  • Since many business travelers connect remotely to continue working while on the road, the potential for theft of corporate information exists.

  • hotel could potentially be considered at fault for not taking the necessary precautions to protect their guests from hackers.
  • The VLAN inhibits attackers from using their computer to imitate the hotel’s main server, which is the mechanism most would use to intercept other people’s data
  • Given that the technology exists to increase a hotel network’s security, a hotel could potentially be considered at fault for not taking the necessary precautions to protect their guests from hackers.

The security of guests' connections to the hotels' network seems to be an essential issue in hospitality industry, especially in those commercial hotels. Based on the leaks of the network technology in the hotels, some companies may hire hackers to steal or snoop the secret data of other companies for achieving some business goals during the business people from the victimized companies staying in the hotels. Therefore, if hotels can not make sure their network system can prevent malicious users from intercepting guests' transmissions, they must admit their weaknesses of network technology and warm guests to be cautious when they access the network system of the hotels if they need to view some secret data. Anyway, hotels should keep taking the necessary precautions to protect their guests from malicious users.
  •
From what I research from the article, VLAN as a local area network itself actually is quite secure cause the fake IP address means a private one.  And it is already encrypted. But the hackers had imitate the hotel's main server. As for the technology developing, it seems like the more secure the system make, the smarter the hacker would be.
  •
This article introduced how hotels improve their network to enhance security. To reduce the potential for stealing by theft and hacker, the W Dallas Hotel set up virtual local area networks. Compared with relatively rundimentary hub technology and encryption for Wi-Fi, the biggest advantage of this VLANs is to inhibit attackers from using computer to imitate the hotel'smain server. I think increaing a hotel network's security is very necessary, still, people should pay more attention to this and improve the techonology to make sure the security of all aspects.

Rezbook Review: New Opentable Competitor | Gourmet Marketing - 0 views

  •
The most famous restaurant reservation software -- Opentable, now has a competitor. Rezbook is the cornerstone of Urbanspoon's online reservation system, from which all the parts come together. The already spectacular iPad, with its wireless internet capability, is the main platform that a restaurant manages reservations from Urbanspoon with. While the software techonology in hotel industry developping very fast , in restaurant industry, the upgrade seems to be quite slow. Opentable covers1/3 restaurant reservation business in United States, but 15000 restaurants believed that they have no more choice. Even though OpenTable pulls the strings in online reservation,Urbanspoon, a relative light weight in online reservation, has created a system both refreshing innovative and beautifully simple. Rezbook maintains efficiency and ease of use while maintaining all the requisite features. It's a step forward. To make an analogy: Urbanspoon especially RezBook, the anchor of their reservation system, takes Apple's ethos of simplicity, functionality and style that have catapulted iPhone, iPad, and iMac to being the industry standard. Not coincidentally, Rezbook works off the iPad. This new system smells the trend of Apple products being used everywhere. The perfect combination will sure attract more attention. At the same time, Rezbook's join will sure help to improve the development of restaurant software.

- Hotels Going the Green Way with Technology - 1 views

  •
There are of course numerous ways a hotel property can go green. Depending on need and budget, one can choose from a range of options and technologies. There are tons of technologies right now designed for hotels to save energy. But, since energy-efficient equipment may be costlier both in terms of installation and capital costs; the hospitality industry is acknowledging the long term benefits to be reaped in terms of reduced maintenance and energy saving, especially when energy costs are escalating. With technology constantly improving and becoming cost effective, initiatives that seemed too expensive just a short while earlier are now within reach of most hotels. Going green using techonologies can be easy for big hotels , but for smaller scale hotels, the installation and maintence costs too much. But we believe that with the fast development of technology , go green will be acceptable for every hotel.

  • Any technology investment is a balancing act. Roll out a new technology and run the risk that something better (more affordable, durable, simplified, etc.) will soon be developed. Or wait for “something better” to come along at the risk of being a bit too far behind the competitive curve.
  • On the supplier side, many vendors have already rolled out or will release some form of mobile-ready solution in 2013. Mobile advancements cover both consumer-facing and employee facing. Vendors’ R&D in cloud-based POS should start to come to market in 2013.

This article discusses some of the POS trends that restaurants will be making in 2013. Restaurants have been more dedicated to customer service than technology investment, but that has started to change. Technology advancements over the years have motivated restaurants to into looking into changing their current models of operations. In the case of POS systems, suppliers have made many advancements to positively impact the customer experience. Mobile POS, social media, and tablet hardware are only a few of the advancements suppliers have made to create interest within the restaurant operator community. Restaurant operators were asked what they were looking for in innovations. Online ordering was the number one choice, and mobile phone features were on the list. KLM Announces "Social Seating" with Facebook Data: Brilliant Idea or Nightmare? - 4 views

  •
Would you pick your seat based on an app for your next plane ride? Well on KLM you can and Virgin is working on one too. Personally I use that time to relax but if I could use it to avoid an avid stamp collecting chatter box it would be worth it. There may be a small fee and possible sell of personal information to marketers but on a long haul flight sitting next to a like-minded individual might make all the difference in a good vs awkward ride. Very neat! Unfortunately, the fun and celebrations of the Christmas season are often dampened by the stressful experience of holiday air travel. ...

WOW..That is a very interesting article. The "social seating" is a creative techonology with a great wish. But I think it is not a easy job to solve and avoid the negatives of this program. The article said the program is meant to align people of certain interests and is not meant to be a type of on-board dating service. No...No matter how many times the company emphasizes that the program is not on-board dating service, it would turn into a dating model.

This seems like an idea that would be very popular, particularly with those who are addicted to facebook. I think it's creative and interesting in concept but I don't think I would even use it if it were free. I am pretty tall so getting an aisle or exit row seat is more important to me than who I sit by. Even if I travel with family or friends, I prefer to listen to music or catch up on reading when I fly. This is a pretty cool idea, but it's not for me.
  •
I agree with you Carl, great idea but not for me. I'd prefer physical comfort over social activity when it comes to flying. If you are the social butterfly who uses Facebook on a regular basis you are probably likely to introduce yourself to your seat mate anyways and strike up conversation. I like the mystery. However, crying babies are never fun so I can see how some people may use this to benefit their sanity.
  •
Hate to say it but I would pick either a short quiet bookish seat mate for silent comfort or a hot single well traveled man if I was feeling talkative. You're right Yonghe it would turn into a potential singles app.
  •
I feel that an app that uses information from social media may be too personal for most. However I do see an opportunity from this idea. Airlines may consider adding an option for their passengers to select if they are travelling for business or pleasure. They could assign seat depending on the purpose of the passengers trip.
  •
To tell the truth, I will try it if it is free to choose people around you. But on the other hand, I think it is hard to implement this system.....

Why now is the time to upgrade your POS system | PizzaMarketPlace.com - 1 views

  • The point-of-sale has traditionally been one of the last updates made by a restaurant operator. Updates occur every six or so years on average. But the future has caught up, and outdated POS systems are not just inefficient, they're a competitive disadvantage.
  • "If you're not keeping up, you are losing business to your more connected competitors. And you're spending more to handle the same number of orders," said Jennifer Wiebe, marketing manager at SpeedLine. Some concepts, for example pizzerias, are now generating more than 40 percent of their sales through web and mobile ordering. POS systems should be able to handle these newer channels.
  •
The author stated that "now is the time to upgrade your POS system" for many reasons: 1. This will bring you a competitive advantage, when you are more connected compared to others. Because more than 40 percent of sale has been generating through web and mobile ordering, with these ordering will not only cut the cost but also improve customers' satisfactions.  2. Because of PCI compliancy standards, the POS update is not a need but a requirements for most businesses. With the new POS system, all the information regarding customers' identification, credit card, etc. or owner's data base will be well protected to reduce a risk of data breach. Important issue is that, many manager recommended to upgrade your hardware instead of software, since many error will be continued without changing new hardware. 3. The initial cost of upgrading POS is definitely an investment, but to gain advantage over your competitors and cutting the cost in the long run are worth it. 4. Some key features to look at when considering an POS upgrade : Fit to the business, connections, and business insight.
