Common Cloud Examples and Cloud Hardware - What Is Cloud Computing? | PCMag.com - 0 views

  •
This article explains cloud computing and the difference between consumers using the cloud and business' using the cloud. It first off explains that the cloud stored information using the Internet rather than using hardware that is an external use for storage. The article states that for consumers or small business' they regularly rely on just the basic Internet to keep track of their information. Larger companies go through an application, which is what they use to store their information. It is still a cloud, but not accessed by millions. The article states that McKinsey & Company survey companies in North America and collected data stating that 80% of large companies are looking to start using the cloud. It continues to say that the cloud market is on its way to generating $100 billion a year. Because companies only pay for what they use, shows consumers that there are more consumers and companies using the cloud then originally thought about.

HNN - Hotel industry explores voice tech, smart speakers - 0 views

  • Through the smart speaker, guests can request information, such as hours of breakfast or for the fitness center, and they’ll receive an immediate “canned” response, he said. For other more specific requests, such as asking for more towels or for a late check out, the platform converts the request through a tablet, which triggers hotels staff to respond accordingly and complete the request.
  • Hotel companies have begun switching over some requests that would normally go to a concierge, such as restaurant recommendations, to voice-activated smart devices, while some have gone a step further and let guests control lights, shades and the HVAC system, said Victor Idrac, project coordinator at HTNG.

This article discusses the never ending demand and growth of technology in the hospitality and tourism industry. The article specially discusses voice technology. Similar to the Amazon Alexa and Google Dot.  Many hotels across the United States have already implemented this technology into their guest rooms. According to the article, "it provides better tracking capability." Ron Phol SVP and COO of Best Western Hotel & Resorts.  A guest can put in a request through the voice technology and software is able to track the time it takes for a guest to receive a response back. This voice technology is still in its baby stages. So an extended amount of training and care is involved when introducing it to hotels, not only for the staff but also the guest.  There is also the concern of security breaches and down time that can slow down the day to day functions of a hotel.

Who takes responsibility for cyber security in a hotel? - 0 views

  • it is vital that franchisors and their corporate security teams communicate franchisees’ contractual duties;
  • It’s you who may need to ensure all policies are upheld, that’s why it pays to provide incentives that will make it worth franchisees’ while to comply.
  • The study also reported that the cost for each lost or stolen record containing sensitive and confidential information increased from an average of $154 to $158.
  • ...9 more annotations...
  • And, while there’s no definitive answer to who owns cyber security in a hotel franchise, hotel owners or franchisees can take measures, such as investing in cyber insurance and maintaining updated systems, to prevent a cyber attack.
  • there have been multiple data breaches in some of the biggest hotel chains, with 55% of data compromises resulting from a corporate/internal network breach.
  • If the lines are still blurred come May 2018 – when GDPR is implemented – hotels may not be compliant and will face strict penalties.
  • Last year’s Ponemon study found the average total cost of a data breach is $4 million.
  • Adding to the cyber security difficulty: most franchisees have multiple properties, each with their own brands and contracts, making it even more important for cyber security policies to be implemented and upheld.
  • However, currently, too many hotel owners rely heavily on central reservation systems; thus, they don’t have much, if any, involvement in data collection or storage. That makes it difficult to implement an effective cyber security policy.
  • Many of the vulnerabilities are due to a gap in hotel franchise’s cyber security responsibility.
  • Unfortunately, this industry is a popular target for attack, because of the type of data it holds – credit card data, frequently used throughout the hotel either at check-in, in bars, restaurants, or shops – as well as relatively poor cyber security.
  • According to a recent Trustwave 2016 Global Security Report, the hospitality industry accounted for the second largest share of data compromises among any other last year.
  •
This article discusses the liability for a cyber breach at various branded hotels between the franchise owner or the corporation. The Trustwave 2016 Global Security Report stated that the hospitality industry had the second largest amount of data breaches. Additionally, more than half of the breaches are from a corporate/internal network breach. According to a Ponemon study, the average cost of a data breach is $4 million. While this is alarming, it is a surprise since hotels store numerous amounts of personal customer data including guest's credit card information. The article states that cyber hacks are largely due to the gap in not knowing who is responsible for the cyber security. There is an issue of control of data versus franchise network requirements. The hotel brand places individual franchisees in control of their own cyber security. However; they must rely on many centralized corporate owned reservation systems that could be possible access point for cyber attacks. The article suggests that the individual franchisee should make more effort in protecting their customers information as the hotel brand will take most of the blame. This does not help either side. Also, it mentions that in order to protect the hotel franchise it is important to have updated systems and should consider investing in cyber insurance.

8 Functions Your Property Management System Needs - 2 views

  • A property management system (PMS) can be one of your property’s greatest assets. A good PMS streamlines everyday tasks and increases efficiency. However, a bad PMS can make your life miserable. A PMS should make your life easier, not harder. Here are the features you should look for when deciding which software product to use.
  • Housekeeping functionality will help keep properties of all sizes running smoothly. Your property management system should automate administrative tasks and create more efficient systems. A housekeeping report falls into this category.
  • Sales and Cancellations You also want to look for sales and cancellations functionality. These tools allow you to see today’s sales and cancellations so you can make the appropriate changes.
  • ...6 more annotations...
  • Calendar A calendar is a great way to visualize reservations and give yourself clarity. With an easy-to-read calendar, you are able to see availability and unlock new possibilities
  • Dashboard When you log in and open your property management system, a friendly, helpful dashboard should greet you. An easy-to-read and understandable dashboard provides an instant snapshot. With the right information, you’ll be able to complete tasks faster and easier. Your property management system should offer you a swift homepage that updates in real time.
  • Best Available Rates (BAR) BAR functionality allows you to control your rate plans. With BAR, you can manage promotions, employee rates, and respond to market conditions.
  • Payment Processor A payment processor built in to your PMS will help you streamline accounting and keep more accurate reports. If a PMS does not have a payment processor
  • Reporting Reports are an essential part to any property. We wrote three articles about reports you should run every night; one about revenue management, and another on learning revenue management secrets from big chain hotels. Needless to say, we believe reports and knowledge are the best way to take your property to the next level. Your property management system should have built-in reporting functionalities
  • Direct Booking Engine Choose a property management system with a commission-free booking engine. Direct bookings are among the most valuable sources of revenue for most properties.
  •
The articles discusses about the eight major function of PMS. The PMS has become on of the key factors for the operations in hotels. The system literally connects all the departments of the hotel under one umbrella. It is easier faster and useful for any hotel organization. The PMS should include these 8 parts: Dashboard: The dashboard should be simple and easily understood by the employees, this will make the check in and check out process quick, even in restaurants the staff would be able to handle orders from the guest quickly. Sales and Cancellation: This will provide a better daily picture about functioning of the hotel rooms. Calendar: This function will help in tracking the booking, noting down occupancy for a particular day. Housekeeping: The housekeeping department would be able to have a proper track of rooms, dirty, clean, dirty vacant and occupied. The housekeeping staff would not have ton call at the front desk all the time to check status of a particular room. Best available rate: The system will give a broader image of rates which needs to be set for the future months, comparing the sales from previous years. Direct booking engine: This what all the hotels wants, to save commission which needs to be provided to the third parties.

The article addresses 5 great benefits that comes with modern accounting but does not take into consideration the drawbacks of using technology to calculate data.
  • 1. Automation and Accuracy: A hotel accounting system makes it easy for you to generate invoices, account statements, produce payslips, and much more.
  • 2. Access from anywhere:

The merge between PMS system and accounting (financial) system.

Accounting within a hotel is very important because it helps to generate reports to determine the cash flow within a hotel. The article that I choose summarizes the changes that have occured that have affected the way accounting is done within a hotel. It touches briefly of how old school vs new school accounting is done. The way accounting was done a few years back was by being done manually with spreadsheets and needed more time to create invoices. As far as the new way accounting is done, there are accounting softwares that allow us to track real time numbers within seconds to determine budgets, statements and other reports. The idea of using the software is to create a more accurate and faster routine to have data represented correctly. It also mentions the integration of PMS and the hotel accounting management software to work together to make it easier for hotels to use. After reading the article, the idea of having these softwares put into place to make it "easier", also comes with the fear of having this technology backfire. With so many benefits being mentioned throughout the article, we would also have to analyze the negatives being hacking, malfunctions and other issues within having technology. Within a hotel, accountants have a lot of individual and group accounts that requires personal information and also deadlines. The use of accounting systems would help to facilitate the amount of data that is being processed and also ensure that its accurate to prevent any mistakes.

This article talks about the various ways virtual reality can be used in the hotel industry. VR can be used to entice consumers to increase their amount of travel, by immersing them in VR versions of almost any travel destination. The article also briefly touches on the use of VR for hotel booking and even training employees.
  •
Very interesting read. I have always had mixed emotions as it relates to the use of virtual reality in the hospitality and tourism sector. On one hand, it is my opinion that virtual reality can add to the guest and consumer experience. Virtual reality can allow consumers to experience multiple levels of travel with the purchase of one ticket or hotel booking. While on the other hand, I am also of the view that virtual reality can limit the amount of travel and hotel bookings that can actually occur. Why would consumers travel to a specific location when they can travel virtually? The article highlights various ways that virtual reality can be used in the hotel industry. Technology is changing and the industry must continue to adapt and make use of the new trends and technological advances. I look forward to the future with virtual reality.
  •
The use of VR as an augmentative tool in Hospitality and Tourism is virtually a non-sequitur. In an industry that is built on experiences its use and value is almost limitless. In of itself, no doubt we will see "Virtual Tourism" become an actual industry. I do believe the timelines being pushed forth by the article represent fairly conservative estimates even with the current limitations of the technology. Oddly it leaves out augmented reality, which is already seeing heavy increases in usage from previewing venues to experiencing the product before you try. With the current rapid progress and access of the technology to the general end user growing, we will see consumer driven adoption outpacing industry delivered implementations quite soon. Once driven by the desires of the consumer, not unlike the advent of the OTA, we will see the industry adopt much more quickly than I think this article presents.

7 Event Technology Trends to Explore in 2019 - Eventbrite US Blog - 1 views

    • mrueda

The article discusses seven event technology trends that are trending in 2018. Event planners are on the hunt to discover the next new products or services that will help them stand out in a coward full of competitors. One trend, that I find so interesting is facial recognition technology. Event planners are using algorithms to reach out to new audiences via social media, improve check-in and security! Another trend, that caught my eye was artificial intelligence for events. Technology such as "chatbots." Chatbot is an automated customer service that helps both guests and event organizers. It will alleviate some of the duties of the staff to be more efficient and address guest issues faster. There are also the right APPs that are being created for events for guest to search, book, post and review events in one place. Also for event organizers to price, communicate and organize all in one place.

  • The right event apps

So, being an event professional in the hospitality industry this article intrigued me. Some of the trends listed are trends that my clients and I have already been using for a few years now like livestreaming events, I had a wedding in Jamaica in 2015 in which my clients live-streamed their nuptials for those daily and friends who could not make the trip. What I did find intriguing was the Facial Recognition aspect of Event Technology. That is unbelievable to me. I know we now have iPhoneXs and SnapChat that already do this so I guess its just a matter of having the right type of phone and app that is compatible with this feature.

This article for event planning and technology shared the current trends of event technology for this year. Facial recognition is becoming popular and is encouraged to use to target an expansive audience. Some events encourage audiences to take advantage of technology by using Facebook to tag photos of the event attendees to to a personalized album. The article also predicts that the future holds facial recognition for attendees checking in for a further improved event. RFID is being widely used by experienced event coordinators in place of event tickets and to reduce payments made physically. With the usage of RFID, it enhances the productivity for the attendees, as well as, make special features, such as raffles, much easier and fun to conduct. Automated customer service features are also rising as it enables guests to conveniently have their questions answered without having to wait to get a response. For example, according to the article, Sound on Sound Fest is a festival for music lovers that created a customer service feature via Facebook Messenger to answer any questions from the potential and prospective attendees. It was said to have instant gratification and success in the ease of asking and answering questions. Apps are also taking a part in events. Apps, such as, Pathable (connect with attendees throughout entire event), Presdo (takes into consideration behavior of attendees), and attendify (share photos, messages, and comments with attendees) are example of applications that events benefit from in this growing trend of event technology. Broadcasting events also assist in gaining popularity for an event and social media walls encourage attendees to post photos of the event with hashtags. Technology is growing and gaining popularity in events. Due to the fact that people are almost never without their cellphones, nevertheless, on their cellphones, the discussed features are popular amongst event attendees and aids in bubbling the posit

Ten Fresh Event Safety Tips for a Brave New World - 0 views

  • From eliminating foreseeable risks to being prepared for the worst, there’s never been a more critical time for event marketers to arm themselves with the intelligence and resources necessary to maintain safe and secure event
  • In the event of an emergency, especially a medical crisis, documenting the incident is vital to keeping insurance premiums in check and staff informed.
  • “You want to document everything to make sure your insurance is covered, your event is covered and everyone knows what happened,” says Connor Fitzpatrick, coo at event medical services company
  • ...13 more annotations...
  • When it comes to selecting a location for your event, make sure the venue is willing to do its part to communicate key messaging to attendees. Remember: if an incident occurs, cooperation will be key.
  • Might sound like a no-brainer, but establishing exactly who is in charge of what and when can save precious minutes in an emergency. From brand ambassadors to event managers, everyone should be crystal clear about what their role entails.
  • “The key thing here is when it comes to decision-making, who is in charge?” says Shannon Jones, vp at Civic Entertainment Group. “The chain of command at an event needs to filter to the overall broader chain of command in an emergency situation as it relates to the company or brand.”
  • The uptick in terrorist attacks, including the Las Vegas shooting, which was executed from a hotel room and stands as the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history, has many event marketers on edge. And while planning for these types of crises is essential, don’t assume that past tactics will be used at future events
  • The approach may vary depending on your budget, but implementing an attendee screening process is a highly effective security measure that can be executed before the event even begins. “Many events these days, particularly the corporate activation events, are free,” says Anthony Davis, president at AD Entertainment Services. “So, you have an audience that has not paid an admission or whatever format you use to access them.
  • Medical emergencies can, and do, occur at events of every variety, so having medical personnel on-site is crucial. Just as important is ensuring that the team is friendly enough for attendees to approach in the case of an emergency. Remember that uniformed first responders can be intimidating, especially in regards to drug-related incidents.
  • Hiring security staff is a great start when it comes to maintaining a safe event, but communicating your event’s layout, including areas of concern, is absolutely essential to getting the most bang for your security buck.
  • Bad news travels fast, so you have to be clear about who has the authority to develop crisis communications. (Hint: It’s not the guy handing out samples.)
  • You don’t want a brand ambassador or event staff taking it upon themselves to communicate what’s going on if there is some sort of emergency information. The cascade of information in that scenario is really critical as is deciding what the key points are and the information you want them to disseminate.”
  • When it comes to event safety and security, there is probably no more important document than your on-site emergency action plan. It’s an essential guide to navigating and preparing for foreseeable risks, informing event staffers of the appropriate safety protocol and ensuring insurance premiums don’t skyrocket
  • Every live experience is unique, so it’s important to establish priorities for taking action in a variety of emergency scenarios. If you fail to do so, you may find yourself in hot water with your employer, your insurance agency or the law.
  • In an industry that prides itself on producing unforgettable experiences, the last thing you want burning in your attendees’ minds is how poorly your staff handled an emergency. So, be informed, be attentive and be prepared—but don’t let the process get you down.
  • As Davis puts it, “For years we’ve taken it for granted that it’s a fun day, it’s a nice special event, let’s just get out and have fun. And we should still have that mentality. We shouldn’t let recent terrorist acts or potential acts deter us from producing special events. The onus is now on us to be more creative in terms of our staffing.”
  •
This article reviews ten tips on how companies can better prepare for event security. Based on recent terrorism attacks, threats, and natural disasters it is important to prepare for any type of emergency especially in events. This article offers insight on tips to navigate event security. For example, one tip is to document everything. In any type of emergency, it is important to document names of attendees and employees who were involved in the crisis. This way if insurance or any assistance is needed, companies have detailed information of who was involved or affected by the disaster. This article is very useful because some things can be forgotten however this can be used as points to discuss other security measures.

Although this article circulates around hospitality, it just goes to show how broad networking has become in this day and age. Individuals from all over the work are using networks to connect with one another and form communities. Throughout the article, the author refers to Andrea Wittel's notion of network sociality and relates it network hospitality. The article goes on to state that Wittel's use of the term 'network' refers both to new structures of electronic connectivity and to practices of making social and professional ties.

How does the GDS fit into your revenue strategy? - Duetto - 0 views

  • Most recently, TravelClick reported the industry is seeing an all-time record use of the GDS for booking hotels. In its annual Global Travel Agent GDS study, TravelClick says over half (51%) of global travel agencies have reported using GDSs more often than compared to the past two years.
  • Just because the few travel agents that are left are using the GDS a bit more doesn’t mean it’s a lucrative channel for your hotel inventory.
  • “The growth reinforces the importance for hoteliers to pay extra attention to the GDS, especially as it is one of the highest average daily rate channels for maximizing revenue per available room (RevPAR).”
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • The safe bet is to analyze your own booking data and crunch the numbers yourselves.
  • You can use this information to calculate Net RevPAR, or revenue per available room after subtracting all the costs it took to acquire that guest.
  •
According to this article, there is a common misconception that Travel Agents always book through GDS's and that they are the reason for increase in GDS bookings. This is false. As years pass, Travel Agents are losing their value over the online world that now consumes everyone's time. According to the article, in 1995 there were approximately 35,000 accredited travel agencies and last reported, in 2015, that number dropped to 12,780! I personally thought that Travel Agents were the main reason for the grand majority of these GDS bookings, but in the article they mention a fair point - Travel Agents have access to GDS, but if rates are lower elsewhere, they will not book through the GDS. It is important for a hotel property to track what rates they are showing on all channels.
  •
This is one of the topics that has greatly affected the hotel industry. When guests seek the lowest rate possible, we are losing potential revenue and considering a travel agent seeks commissionable rates, our net profit is much less than the displayed rate.

Bed & Breakfasts | Email Marketing | StreamSend - 1 views

  • Bed and breakfasts often do not get the opportunity to market their businesses the way they should
  • With email marketing software, marketing has now become more affordable than ever – even for a quaint bed and breakfast.
  • Flyers and television advertisements are costly marketing techniques that often do not showcase the level of quality in their accommodations

  • When innkeepers send an email blast with easy-to-use email marketing software, customers can see updates to the breakfast menu, local weather conditions for their weekend stay, special offers for specific events within your area or even special weekend packages!
  • Email blasts are a great way to keep customers engaged and up to date with your bed and breakfast.
  • With email marketing driven by the power of the internet and social media, bed and breakfasts can bring together those with a passion for travel, pampering, sightseeing and first class food; what a magnificent combination!
  • Dan Forootan is the President of EZ Publishing. The firm specializes in helping businesses harness the power of the Internet for marketing and to automate business processes.
  •
The lodging industry is one of the most popular in the hospitality industry. Bed and Breakfasts provide an alternative to hotels and motels by providing a literal home away from home experience. Unfortunately, the advertising and marketing of a bed a breakfast, according to this article, needs to upgrade. Email marketing would be a great addition to this sector of the industry to promote deals, updated breakfast menus, and etc. Giving customers an email blast every now and then can help. This can also increase customer loyalty. According to the article, it is a great way to keep customers engaged and up to date. The article promotes StreamSend, which is an email marketing software that helps with marketing by including vibrant imagery, videos, surveys, and other interactive elements (StreamSend). This is also said to be affordable and dependable, making it ideal for any industry including a bed and breakfast. I think this is a great start, specifically for those in the bed and breakfast sector of hospitality. The bed and breakfast brings airbnb and a hotel together with different amenities and not just another place to stay for the night. So it makes sense for the innkeepers to jump into email marketing to promote their business in different ways and to have more access to guests in regards to promotions.

Why GDS Will Remain a Crucial Booking Channel for Hoteliers in 2017 and Beyond. - Monda... - 1 views

  • Even though online bookings continue to grow and will do so for the foreseeable future, hoteliers need to maintain a focus on the GDS channel, which will remain a critical source of revenue and bookings both in 2017 and for the next several years.
  • offline sales will continue to dominate the marketplace in 2017
  • an effective hotel distribution strategy must consider all distribution channels, including GDS, to find the strategy that's best for a particular hotel and market.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • But despite years of predictions that agent-booked travel would decrease, GDS bookings remain strong: In our sample of data from Sabre hotels, the number of room nights booked via GDS grew by 1.08 million from 2015 to 2016, an increase of 10.4 percent. These numbers underscore industry analysts’ expectations for growth in this channel.
  • Successful inventory and distribution management strategies also require the right technology platform
  •
This article explains the booking trend of hotel in 2017 and afterward. Even though online booking tools such as website, mobile apps have made tourists easier to book the hotel in the world, in hotel's perspective, GDS is still the main contributor to increasing bookings and enhancing the hotel revenue. According to the article, GDS booking increased by 11.6 percent between the year 2015 and 2016, and around 60 percent of bookings at hotel were made through offline sources including CRS, walk-in, call or GDS. Among these, the major tool was GDS. Furthermore, the change of economic and political environment has caused hotels to have the right tools to decrease the loss. Thus, hotels should be equipped with the technology platform to monitor and support inventory and distribution channels. Every hotel has different situation and different booking channel. For example, when I was working at reservation department, our main booking source was an online. In other words, each hotel should find out what their main booking channel is, and based on that, suitable strategy to improve revenue should be developed even though this article emphasizes the importance of GDS booking.

Travel Agents Rely on GDS for Hotel Selection | News | Breaking Travel News - 0 views

  • Conducted by NFO Plog Research, the study shows approximately 60% of all travel agents are aware of advertising via GDS media, a proportion that is unchanged from research conducted two years ago.
  • The research study also demonstrates that travel agents are increasing their reliance on GDS systems for hotel information. Nearly 90% of travel agents say that they use their GDS and GDS shopping displays as much or more today than two years ago. Travel agents also report increased use of hotel property Web sites compared to two years ago. Travel agents are less likely now to use printed hotel directories, direct mail, fax, and the phone to gather information about hotels.
  • The GDS remains one of the most critical and productive marketing channels for a hotel,” said Roland Tanner, president of the Hotel Electronic Distribution Network Association. “The travel agent GDS marketplace remains the largest single source of electronic business for the hospitality industry, and, although we are seeing large volume growth in the Internet distribution channels, the GDS is still a much larger source of room night revenue compared to the entire Internet channel.”
  •
The research the article reports supports traditional travel agents reliance on GDS for hotel selections. The article reports travel agents respond to GDS media used mostly by hotels. The information shared in the article written in 2003 and reported there was an increase in the use of their GDS from two years prior. Considering the growth of GSD today offering more selections sixteen years later, it should be more beneficial for travel agents.
