    Interesting: study finds no association between tryptophan and serotonin levels and depression.  The study found no difference between 44 "depressed" perimenopausal women and 19 "without depression".  Serotonin therapy of depression??  However, poor sleep and hot flashes did.

    Some with depression are found to have elevated salivary cortisol and others are not.  Likewise, some with depression have low serotonin and others do not.  The point is that the biochemistry of depression is complex and cortisol, serotonin, 5-HTP, tryptophan all may play a role in an individuals "depression".   One thing not included is the out.  How are these individuals metabolizing their cortisol?  As the author stated, some are hyper secretors of cortisol; why not hyper metabolizers?  Weibe has shown many are.

    study points to a modest decrease in dopamine and serotonin production in heroic users.  There appears to be a decrease in dopamine production, which could be via a down regulation of tyrosine hydroxylase enzyme and thus release.  Decreased homovanillate also noted.  Other studies have pointed to a decrease/downregulation of D2/D3 receptors.

    There is just no reason to take SSRIs during pregnancy.  SSRIs increase risk of miscarriage, birth defects, preterm birth, newborn behavior problems, pulmonary hypertension...All women considering pregnancy should removed, yet SSRIs are prescribed as if they are candy.

Testosterone decreases γ-aminobutyric acid concentration in the hypothalamus, which is blocked by flutamide, a testosterone receptor blocker (14, 15). Testosterone, probably by its conversion to estradiol, increases serotonin transporter mRNA expression in dorsal raphe nucleus (16), and it also increases the density of 5-hydroxytryptamine receptors and serotonin transporter sites in the forebrain (3, 16) of castrated male rats.

    very interesting study of 7 men.  Increase brain perfusion found and symptom improvement as a result of Testosterone therapy in men ages 58-72.  Specific increase perfusion by SPECT scans were in the midbrain and Brodman areas 8 and 24 of the cerebral cortex.
