Flipped Classroom - 13 views

" Moving lectures outside of the classroom allows teachers to spend more 1:1 time with each student. Students have the opportunity to ask questions and work through problems with the guidance of their teachers and the support of their peers - creating a collaborative learning environment."

Updated comment! Educators, whether parents, teachers or lecturers have a huge task in keeping up with what is really important - there are a lot of courses on what social-media is, but very few (that I can see) on the relational and dialogic aspects of social media. Challenging times!

A very worthwhile read, just to remind us that integrating technology into a classroom has to carefully planned.

You are absolutely right.  Moreover, technology exposes the weakness of our teaching methods.

This seems a little skewed. To say that the students did not do well on the test is to say they did not do well in terms of listening to the lecturer. However, it does not mean they did not deeply understand the topic. Who wrote the test? And what information was tested? While I agree that technology can be a distraction, it is also important for teachers to understand that we must change our pedagogy to keep up with the ways students are learning currently--which may not be through lecture.

The Transformational Potential of Flipped Classrooms : Education Next - 3 views

  •
"the flipped classroom is a form of blended learning in which students learn online at least part of the time while attending a brick-and-mortar school. Either at home or during a homework period at school, students view lessons and lectures online. Time in the classroom, previously reserved for teacher instruction, is spent on what we used to call homework, with teacher assistance as needed. How can this improve student learning? "

Podcasting Business Learning: Addressing the New Learning Styles for Generation Y - 1 views

  •
by Stevina Evuleocha, Steve Ugbah California State University Abstract The quest for an ideal medium to deliver business content to Gen Y learners has led instructors to consider the Internet, since digital content that exists in databases can be manipulated by a range of programming services (Shim et al., 2006). Shim et al., have also asserted that web development has been hampered by bandwidth and difficulties of "back end integration," consequently, impacting the presentational aspects of data and user interfaces (Yang & Tang, 2005). Innovations in computer and software technologies appear to have ameliorated the technical difficulties, resulting in the emergence of new media such as podcasting, webcasting, videostreaming, blogging, and Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) technologies (Shim, 2002). These new media streams can be integrated into traditional lectures, thus enhancing the educational environment (McLaughlin, 2006), particularly for Gen Y learners. This paper discusses the efficacy of podcasting in business education, reviews the characteristics of Generation Y (Gen Y) learners, discusses learning styles and theories that support mobile learning, reviews learning styles of Gen Y learners, and discusses whether adaptations are necessary to address the updated needs of this new generation of learners in the business communication context.

Is Brick & Mortar Education Going to be Left in the Dust by Online Learning &... - 52 views

"Cognitive theories of education that anchor approaches like Constructivism have been suggested as preferable approaches for many decades. Unfortunately traditional educational institutions, as well as certification bodies and most notably political administrations have long favored didactic instruction (basically drill and kill, lecture-centric approaches to education) because the results of these methods are far simpler to track and report. Assessing the effects of interactive blogging on student attitudes towards peer interac... - 2 views

  •
Blogs have been increasingly used to supplement traditional classroom lectures in higher education. This paper explores the use of blogs, and how student attitudes towards online peer interaction and peer learning, as well as motivation to learn from peers, may differ when using the blog comments feature, and when students are encouraged to read and comment on each other's work. We contrast two ways blogs affect learning engagement: (1) solitary blogs as personal digital portfolios for writers; or (2) blogs used interactively to facilitate peer interaction by exposing blogging content and comments to peers. A quasi-experiment was conducted across two semesters, involving 154 graduate and undergraduate students. The result suggests that interactive blogs, compared with isolated blogs, are associated with positive attitudes towards academic achievement in course subjects and in online peer interaction. Students showed positive motivation to learn from peer work, regardless of whether blogs were interactive or solitary.

  • except for the occasional late bloomer, we fail miserably at creating sustained intellectual fires among the vast majority of our practical, credential-driven students.
  • better and more widely achievable educational goal should therefore be to inculcate a respect for learning and the pursuit of knowledge.
