National Center for Education Statistics, The Nation's Report Card: Writing 2011 - 2 views

  •
Asa Spencer of the Thomas B. Fordham Institute writes in the Education Gadfly Weekly: "Traditionalists cringe, tech buffs rejoice: This latest NAEP writing assessment for grades eight and twelve marks the first computer-based appraisal (by the "nation's report card") of student proficiency in this subject. It evaluates students' writing skills (what NAEP calls both academic and workplace writing) based on three criteria: idea development, organization, and language facility and conventions. Results were predictably bad: Just twenty-four percent of eighth graders and 27 percent of twelfth graders scored proficient or above. Boys performed particularly poorly; half as many eighth-grade males reached proficiency as their female counterparts. The use of computers adds a level of complexity to these analyses: The software allows those being tested to use a thesaurus (which 29 percent of eighth graders exploited), text-to-speech software (71 percent of eighth graders used), spell check (three-quarters of twelfth graders), and kindred functions. It is unclear whether use of these crutches affected a student's "language facility" scores, though it sure seems likely. While this new mechanism for assessing kids' writing prowess makes it impossible to track trend data, one can make (disheartening) comparisons across subjects. About a third of eighth graders hit the NAEP proficiency benchmark in the latest science, math, and reading assessments, compared to a quarter for writing. So where to go from here? The report also notes that twelfth-grade students who write four to five pages a week score ten points higher than those who write just one page a week. Encouraging students to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard) is a start."

We'll be using this on our snowdays. Kids and teachers will meet in scheduled classes and continue to work using this as one of our tools.

I once held a department meeting when I was out of the building using this. I have also used it while showing a movie to classes; students can comment and get questions answered right away.

I've used it during a video in class. Kids are able to pose questions to each other, provide comments, state their opinions and express themself. Worked great.

Plan to use it for discussion during class movie showing, for which I have in the past used Meebo rooms (no longer available) or piratepad: http://the-ed-rush.blogspot.com/2008/11/talking-through-movie.html This looks like it might work very well.

Recently I had 9th graders talking to each other and me while they read a selection from their text. A couple of students did not like it, but most said it was helpful in understanding the material they were reading.

I use this often during my PBL activities. As students are researching, they post links to websites that are helpful for others and they post their ideas. At the end of the lesson, we look over the list one last time and make our whole-class decision based on our findings. My 5th graders love it and it has made their problem solving much better since it is based on research and collaboration.

Nothing makes you more blue than a clogged up useless glue (bottle). We've all felt the frustration and disgust when glue bottles don't work right. But have we considered how this makes THEM feel? This original musical Fugleflick by Dryden 5th graders may change the way glue bottles are used everywhere!

Second-Graders At Elmwood Franklin School Edit NFL Tweets For Bad Grammar (PHOTOS) - 42 views

"NFL players steal the spotlight for lots of reasons. Proficiency in grammar has never been one of them. Mark Saldanha, a second-grade teacher at Elmwood Franklin School in Buffalo, N.Y., decided to use that to his advantage last week, when his class selected tweets from NFL players -- and then corrected them."

When an adult took standardized tests forced on kids - The Answer Sheet - The Washingto... - 6 views

  • A test that can determine a student’s future life chances should surely relate in some practical way to the requirements of life. I can’t see how that could possibly be true of the test I took.”
  • “If I’d been required to take those two tests when I was a 10th grader, my life would almost certainly have been very different. I’d have been told I wasn’t ‘college material,’ would probably have believed it, and looked for work appropriate for the level of ability that the test said I had.
  • “It makes no sense to me that a test with the potential for shaping a student’s entire future has so little apparent relevance to adult, real-world functioning.

Thanks for sharing insights on this large-scale roll out. Gives me further considerations about the next level of our 1:1 pilot programme. Love the shift in paradigm on printing - do you know whether they were using Edmodo for task submissions? Or does Schoology take care of the online exchange?
