      This game can be differentiated by grouping students (7 cards, six cards, five cards) and they can earn a certificate when they demonstrate they are ready to move up to a new group.  This is a great way to reinforce skills and also assess students' progress.

      For differentiated learning, have sections of students competing.  Some could compete at the seven card level, others at six, and others at five.  As they "pass" each level, they earn a certificate entitling them to compete at the next level.  Great way to improve skills and assess progress!

On long strips of paper I made place value charts, making sure the commas were in place and writing the words (ones, tens, hundreds, etc.) under the blank line where a number will be placed. Laminate. With a partner and a deck of cards the children shuffle the deck and then pass out the predetermined number of cards according to how far you want them to learn place value. Hundred thousands would be 6 cards, millions 7 cards, 10 millions 8 cards, etc. Cards are face down in a pile. Face cards equal 1, aces are 0, and everything else what they say. They are trying to make the largest number possible to win (or smallest). Both players turn over a card at the same time and decide where to place it. Once placed it must stay there....

    This is a GREAT game idea to reinforce place value.  FANTASTIC!  Kids love games. Easy and inexpensive to make.  You need paper (laminate finished product) and decks of cards.  Can be independent learning, homework, or station time with students.

      This activity could be used for home practice (as flash cards) as well as an independent station.  For differentiation, students may utilize a number line if they need help.  It would be easy to make additional cards that incorporate numbers up to and through the one hundreds for students as they attain mastery at various levels.

      Differentiated curriculum:  Assign teams, and allow each "team" to design a different biome at the zoo.  Students would be grouped by the teacher into teams with different abilities.

  • pennies and dimes on a piggy bank bulletin board I also count the first 100 days of school. On a bulletin board I have a pig pink piggy bank cut out. Everyday we put up a penny (velcro spots on the bulletin board and on back of large paper coins). When we get 10 pennies, I take them down, change to a dime and stick it in the bank.       This would be a wonderful connection to literature and a service learning project. Are you familiar with the counting rice website where the students calculate math problems while earning rice for people living in third world countries?

    I would modify this idea to include nickels and quarters also.  The students add one penny for each day.  When ten pennies accumulate, a dime is substituted.  Perhaps they add a nickel for each rainy day until five nickels accumulate (and a quarter is substituted.)  We would skip count by fives and tens (depending on what we have on our piggy) until we can total our amount.  Each day we will accumulate more of each.

This activity would make a good station activity for a small group of students. For ELLs make sure to only include the symbols (+, =, etc.) so they do not have to read equals and add.

Students could hypothesize how much area or volume an object has and then determine if they were correct or not. The students could do this for several items and see if they become more accurate.

      Allow students to work independently or in small groups.  Provide legos and base plates for student use.  Differentiation may include the chance to design the entire room, or just the toy box.  Students would have an opportunity to visually present, or just set up the model.

  • Addition Mission         Game mats               Number cards This game is designed to practice addition skills. Children should be somewhat familiar with addition before playing. Print one set of game mats (enough for 6 players) and one set of number cards (pages 2-5 ONLY). Then reinsert the number card pages into your printer so that you can print Buzz Light Year (page 1 ONLY) on the back (or use your printers double-sided feature if it has one). Cut apart number cards. Laminate the game mats or place inside plastic protectors. To play, children take turns choosing 2 Buzz cards. The child adds the numbers together and if he has the matching sum on his game mat, he places the cards on the mat. If not, he discards them. Play continues until one player fills his game mat. This player wins.

    Fractions with color tiles.  Allows students to record their findings on graph paper.  Make a game of it by trading papers, and allowing the other student to attempt to build the other student's fraction bar without peeking at the answer.

  • Activity: Blubber GloveThis teacher assisted activity will help the children to understand how the layer of blubber keeps the polar bear warm. I got this idea from the (Editors of Publications International, Ltd). These are the items you will need: Crisco, 1 cup 2 large zip-lock bags Bucket for ice and water Fill the bowl with ice and water. With one bag filled with the shortening, the child places his hand in the other zip-lock bag, used as a glove. He then slides it into the bag of "blubber". Seal the edges on each side as close to the child's hand as possible. Help the child to swish the shortening evenly around his hand, then dip it into the bucket of ice water. As the child tests the ice water with the other hand, ask to compare how it felt with and without the "blubber glove". Make a chart to record the student's observations, with and without the "blubber". Explain that the polar bear has up to 4 inches of blubber that insulates his body to keep him warm.
