      When doing an assessment vary questions asked to help them remain successful. Most students should have no problems assembling the sandwich. If the noise does not agree with a student, consider making another instrument, like a drum to keep them involved.

    Awesome activity to shows students about sound. This site has video tutorials and 3 links that provide a concept map, instructions to perform activity in class or in after school activities, and websites that allow students or educator go deeper in their understanding of sound. You can essentially make your own assessment for the activity.

      This is a creative activity that addresses science and language arts curricula.  Computers/internet access is required.

    This activity addresses the third grade Physical Science standards 3.1.1, 3.1.2, and 3.1.3.  It meets the core standard of Observe and describe how sound is produced by vibrations. I like this activity because it allows students to choose where their journey will take them.  Internet access is a requirement.  I do not think this activity would be as dynamic if it were adapted to be just a listening activity.   ELL's could use the internet to "travel" and investigate sound in their native language.  High ability learners could create an atlas to go with their journals.

      K.2.3 "Describe in words and pictures the changes in weather from month to month and season to season."  This activity can be adjusted for ELL students by allowing them to use only pictures for recording their observations. If the students are feeling somewhat comfortable with the new language, they can be paired with English speaking students to work together to spell and sound out words for their notebooks. This activity can be modified for older age groups by having the students make predictions about what is going to happen with the weather conditions. These students can also make predictions about why they think the seasons change.

    Students can participate in this long-term activity by observing and recording the weather each week of the school term, or the school year. The students can do various activities within this long-term activity, such as measuring the amount of rain or snow, recording weather conditions, making observations in a notebook, etc. This is a great way to observe and learn the seasons!

    state standard: 5.1.4 This activity may not exactly fit the bill for a state standard, but this is sure to be an activity that will get students attention. You could use this activity as a reward for good behavior or good work ethics from the entire class.

    We will be doing this activity at our scientific celebration. A variation I would suggest is to have the kids wear gloves or mittens in order to keep their hands from getting too cold.

    This is a familiar activity!  This fun activity teaches students about harnessing potential and kinetic energy!  Very good for students who need to learn or like to work in teams!  Also would be fun on a family night.

      To increase the difficulty of this activity you could also use subtraction, multiplication, and division. Students who need extra help could be paired up to help eachother during the activity. This activity would make a good station activity for a small group of students. For ELLs make sure to only include the symbols (+, =, etc.) so they do not have to read equals and add.

    Here's a hands-on activity that classroom teachers use to help kids get a feel for equations and start building lifelong skills. Popsicle sticks are used to create different addition problems.

    Adaption: SEE "MOON PHASES ACTIVITY-PHRASES FOR PHASES: A MOON TUNE. Extensions: You can extend this activity for 6th grade my having them creat a model of the moon and it's phases and demonstrating their understanding through a presentations. ( I would group them and have each person write about their part of the demonstration and that it what they present) You can extend it you younger grades by having them draw the phases of the moon and with parents (as homework) go outside at night and dermine which phase the moon is in and drawing a picture of that phase on the claendar. 5.2.4 Use a calendar to record observations of the shape of the moon and the rising and setting times over the course of a month. Based on the observations, describe patterns in the moon cycle. 5.2.1 Recognize that our earth is part of the solar system in which the sun, an average star, is the central and largest body. Observe that our solar system includes the sun, moon, seven other planets and their moons, and many other smaller objects like asteroids and comets.

      5.4.2 Investigate the purpose of prototypes and models when designing a solution to a problem and how limitations in cost and design features might affect their construction. Differentiation: For special needs students to practice their life skills, give them a Wal-Mart or grocery store add and help them look up the price of one roll of aluminum foil.  Then, help them look up the price of a newspaper.  Assist students in deciding which material was more cost effective, and which material worked the best.  Take a vote on which you would use.

    This activity is unique because it combines science with a practical application that provides a solution to a problem. In this activity, students will be put a small bowl of hot oatmeal into a plastic baggie, test the temperature, and seal it.  Then students will place three sheets of aluminum foil or three sheets of newspaper over the baggie.  After 15 minutes the students will re-test the temperature using a thermometer and discover which material saved heat!

Compost is a great way to deal with waste that often ends up in landfills.  In this activity students will watch different kinds of vegetation decompose and turn into rich, useful soil! This could even be used for a class or school garden!

      ELL - English Language Learners could work with a partner to research the site, but the sifting and categorizing process is hands on, and doesn't require strong language skills.  By using pictorial examples for instructions, ELL students can be successful in this effort.

    This site doesn't provide specific activities; however, I would design earth science activities to assist kids in researching this park, and the surround area.  We would discuss how and why the area has these deposits, the history of the area, and how to go about finding diamonds and other cool rocks.   Extension activity:  Order bags of dirt from Crater of Diamonds park and have the kids sift through to find and identify various rocks and minerals.   Standards: 3.2.1:  Examine the physical properties of rock samples and sort them into categories based on size using simple tools such as sieves. 3.2.2:  Observe the detailed characteristics of rocks and minerals.  Identify rocks as being composed of different combinations of minerals. 3.2.3:  Classify and identify minerals by their physical properties of hardness, color, luster, and streak.

Students could hypothesize how much area or volume an object has and then determine if they were correct or not. The students could do this for several items and see if they become more accurate.

      4.G.3 "Recognize a line of symmetry for a two-dimensional figure as a line across the figure such that the figure can be folded along the line into matching parts. Identify line-symmetric figures and draw lines of symmetry." This activity can be modified for gifted students by challenging them with more cards. Encourage them to use as many cards as they would like while participating in this activity! This activity can be used with younger ages by using objects other than cards. A big picture cut into pieces would help the students visualize symmetry, as it would be more like putting a puzzle together. The leader just gets to choose in what order the puzzle is assembled! Both players could check their work by knowing if the picture looks right.

    A pair of students work together for this symmetry activity. The students sit across from one another, with playing cards dealt for each student. A ruler or other dividing line separates one student's side from the other. One player starts as the leader, and places one of their cards down on the table. The player on the other side of the line follows the leader in an attempt to match the first player's moves perfectly on their side of the divider.
