      This activity could also be connected to health class when learning about the systems of the body. Students could also create other objects that resemble body parts and their functions. This activity can be connected to langauge arts by having students research and write about the function of the vertebral column.

    This activity addresses the third grade Physical Science standards 3.1.1, 3.1.2, and 3.1.3.  It meets the core standard of Observe and describe how sound is produced by vibrations. I like this activity because it allows students to choose where their journey will take them.  Internet access is a requirement.  I do not think this activity would be as dynamic if it were adapted to be just a listening activity.   ELL's could use the internet to "travel" and investigate sound in their native language.  High ability learners could create an atlas to go with their journals.

      I love this game. There is really no need to come up with new ways to extend this activity, as the students pass each level they get a little more difficult! I think kids will LOVE this activity and not even realize they are learning! This will be good for working on introducing computer skills as well. Be sure to go over how to use the mouse for younger grades and ELL and special need students.

      Common core math 5.MD.4  I like that this allows students to ponder different questions, think through different ideas on how to calculate it, and in the process, learn about volume.  Students who need an extra challenge could determine how many peas would fill their homes, or how many to fill the school.  Students needing extra assistance can be paired with students who are stronger in math, and/or work with the teacher in small groups.

Differentiation: Pair an ELL student with a classroom "buddy."  This person can help to model the game and walk the student through the directions.  By modeling the game for the ELL student, the other student will be re-affirming their knowledge in the subject.

    This activity will help students find perimeter and area.  Students will draw a card from a bag and then use a colored pencil to draw that shape.  After time, students may flip or rotate their figures to fit on the board but figures may not overlap.  This activity makes students pay attention to precise angles and makes them think critically about a shapes sides and angles when rotating or flipping.

      Extension:  If each ordered pair is graphed accurately and each point is connected in the given order, you will have created a five-pointed star!  This makes a connection with math to art (shapes are an element of art). Adaptations: ESL students would see the answer in picture form.  Gifted students could make other graphs with this activity.  Special Ed students could work in pairs.

For Kindergarten or 1st grade you can extend this activity by creating a center of a dinosaur dig and have the students make their own fossil as well as draw a picture of the fossil they "dug up" and writing a simple sentence about what they think their fossil is.

      This is a great activity that takes this standard to a whole new level- using the body to make a model of a machine.  Once the students have completed the activity, I would challenge them to think of what we use in our every day life that is made out of machines like the "marshmallow-smashing machine." Sixth grade students will love coming up with silly noises and motions- awesome learning tool/visual for kinesthetic students!

    Children are formed into groups to 'invent' a pretend machine that smashes marshmallows. Each child plays the role of a cog or part of the machine to move the marshmallow along. Children then read the story Mike Mulligan and His Steam Shovel, a machine that digs its way to a happy ending, and recognize how technological devices affect our lives.

      K.2.3 "Describe in words and pictures the changes in weather from month to month and season to season."  This activity can be adjusted for ELL students by allowing them to use only pictures for recording their observations. If the students are feeling somewhat comfortable with the new language, they can be paired with English speaking students to work together to spell and sound out words for their notebooks. This activity can be modified for older age groups by having the students make predictions about what is going to happen with the weather conditions. These students can also make predictions about why they think the seasons change.

    Students can participate in this long-term activity by observing and recording the weather each week of the school term, or the school year. The students can do various activities within this long-term activity, such as measuring the amount of rain or snow, recording weather conditions, making observations in a notebook, etc. This is a great way to observe and learn the seasons!
