Differentiation: Have ELL students keep a picture journal of drawings of their compost 2 times a week.  Observe the changes over time.

    This activity is an awesome life science experiment that students can use for the rest of their lives- making compost! Compost is a great way to deal with waste that often ends up in landfills.  In this activity students will watch different kinds of vegetation decompose and turn into rich, useful soil! This could even be used for a class or school garden!

      5.4.2 Investigate the purpose of prototypes and models when designing a solution to a problem and how limitations in cost and design features might affect their construction. Differentiation: For special needs students to practice their life skills, give them a Wal-Mart or grocery store add and help them look up the price of one roll of aluminum foil.  Then, help them look up the price of a newspaper.  Assist students in deciding which material was more cost effective, and which material worked the best.  Take a vote on which you would use.

    This activity is unique because it combines science with a practical application that provides a solution to a problem. In this activity, students will be put a small bowl of hot oatmeal into a plastic baggie, test the temperature, and seal it.  Then students will place three sheets of aluminum foil or three sheets of newspaper over the baggie.  After 15 minutes the students will re-test the temperature using a thermometer and discover which material saved heat!

Differentiation: Gifted students could go a step further and cover the next standard "6.4.3 Describe the transfer of energy amongst energy interactions" and do a write up on how energy was transferred during this activity

    This is a familiar activity!  This fun activity teaches students about harnessing potential and kinetic energy!  Very good for students who need to learn or like to work in teams!  Also would be fun on a family night.

      3.3.1 Identify the common structures of a plant including its roots, stems, leaves, flowers, fruits and seeds. Describe their functions.3.3.2 Investigate plant growth over time, take measurements in SI units, record the data and display the data in graphs. Examine factors that might influence plant growth. Differentiation: Have gifted and special needs students come up with a creative way to display their plant's structures.  This can be oral, artistic, acted out, etc...

    Using household items such as a shoebox, plastic wrap, potting soil, and an old sock, students can grow their own plants! Students will tae care of their plants and chart the plant's progress and changes. They will also analyze their plant's structures and compare their common structures with other plants while discussing their purpose.

Differentiation: Have ELL students record their biome's progress and changes using a picture graph.

    In this activity, students will make a mini biome in the bottom of a one liter bottle.  Students will be able to plant a seed and give it certain nutrients to watch it grow, adapt, and change to its environment.

Differentiation: Instead of writing out a hypothesis, have special education students draw the designs or what they predict will happen to the salt when they swing their pendulum.

    Using paper, string, and salt, students will create a cone out of the paper that will act as their pendulum.  They will swing the pendulum so it just touches the pile of salt and watch the designs it makes.  Students can change the pendulum's direction to see if that changes the design.

Differentiation: Gifted students could do extended research on how people used to make butter in the pioneer days.  Have them note what was similar to how they made butter, and what was different.

    In this activity, students will shake heavy cream in a jar to watch a liquid turn into a solid-butter!  This is a very simple, yet exciting project that can then be eaten later!

      5.4.1 Investigate technologies that mimic human or animal musculoskeletal systems in order to meet a need.5.4.2 Investigate the purpose of prototypes and models when designing a solution to a problem and how limitations in cost and design features might affect their construction.5.4.3 Design solutions to problems in the context of musculoskeletal body systems. Using suitable tools, techniques and materials, draw or build a prototype or model of a proposed design. Differentiation: For ELL and special education students; Create the model hand with the class as they create it.  Go step by step and do the process with them so they can watch you and hear the directions you are giving.

    Have students look up a prototype online that mimics a human musculoskeletal system.  Have them share with the class the purpose and prototype. Next, as a class students will create a model hand using simple materials such as string, paper, and a pen or pencil.  Have the students create this hand and see how the "tendons" mimic the musculoskeletal system in a real human hand.

Explain the direction the heat moved. Differentiation: For ELL students, allow them to draw their predictions and also draw which direction they think the heat is moving after testing.

    In this activity, students will make predictions about how heat moves in a hot drink.  Students will make predictions about how cool a drink will get over time and what some factors are in changing the heat.  Then hot and cold water and milk, students will test these predictions.

Record the sounds and then discuss and share the results. 3.1.3 Investigate and recognize that sound moves through solids, liquids and gases (e.g., air). Differentiation: Assign a student with poor fine motor skills a partner to do their hole poking for them.  With their partner, have students build their telephones with help from a peer.  Although this project may seem simple to build, students with under-developed motor skills would have great difficulty with this task.  Having a students get help from a peer would allow them to complete the task and practice working collaboratively with others.

    In this activity, students will create a telephone using paper cups and string.  Students will use their telephones to observe how sound and vibrations travel through air.

    Using a container lid, scissors, a marker, a straw, and a pin students will create their own weather vanes that they can use to go outside and observe the act and direction of wind.

    Using a chocolate bar or chocolate chips students will experiment with melting the chocolate in a microwave or over a stove.  Students will make predictions and will make observations about the solid turning into a liquid.  After they have made these observations they will put the chocolate back into the freezer and make predictions and observations about what happens next.

Differentiation: Allow ELL students to present orally, in written expression, or artistically (poster, picture...) on a severe weather phenomena that is common in the area where they are from and the safety procedures for this weather.  This will allow students to present on a topic that is familiar and also educate other students on their background.

    Help students to understand what goes on in a tornado by creating one of your own!  This is a common severe weather phenomena that happens in Indiana and should be combined with safety procedures on the topic.

Differentiation: For students with learning disabilities, coming up with the words to describe what their senses are communicating to them can be very difficult.  Writing down their experience can be even more difficult.  Instead, allow students to draw what they think they are tasting and pictures to represent certain adjectives such as 'sweet'.

    In this activity students have to use their knowledge of the phases of the moon to analyze children's books and their depictions of the moon.  Using the list of  books, students are to review the depiction of the moon and determine if it is accurate or inaccurate.  Then, students are to look at books like "Goodnight Moon" and analyze a story where the moon is depicted accurately.

    This activity can be adapted to practice basic facts, identifying simple polygons, or finding the meaning of fractions. The game involves rolling a die and landing on a marker.  Each player must either solve a problem on the marker or answer a question in a cell to move forward.
