      ELL - English Language Learners could work with a partner to research the site, but the sifting and categorizing process is hands on, and doesn't require strong language skills.  By using pictorial examples for instructions, ELL students can be successful in this effort.

    This site doesn't provide specific activities; however, I would design earth science activities to assist kids in researching this park, and the surround area.  We would discuss how and why the area has these deposits, the history of the area, and how to go about finding diamonds and other cool rocks.   Extension activity:  Order bags of dirt from Crater of Diamonds park and have the kids sift through to find and identify various rocks and minerals.   Standards: 3.2.1:  Examine the physical properties of rock samples and sort them into categories based on size using simple tools such as sieves. 3.2.2:  Observe the detailed characteristics of rocks and minerals.  Identify rocks as being composed of different combinations of minerals. 3.2.3:  Classify and identify minerals by their physical properties of hardness, color, luster, and streak.

This activity will also help students who need to apply their knowledge to real objects they can easily see instead of ones in a textbook on a flat surface. This activity could connect to science. Students could hypothesize how much area or volume an object has and then determine if they were correct or not. The students could do this for several items and see if they become more accurate.

      4.G.1  Draw points, lines, line segments, rays, angles, and perpendicular and parallel lines.   Identify these in two-dimensional figures. Differentiation: Pair an ELL student with a classroom "buddy."  This person can help to model the game and walk the student through the directions.  By modeling the game for the ELL student, the other student will be re-affirming their knowledge in the subject.

    This activity will help students find perimeter and area.  Students will draw a card from a bag and then use a colored pencil to draw that shape.  After time, students may flip or rotate their figures to fit on the board but figures may not overlap.  This activity makes students pay attention to precise angles and makes them think critically about a shapes sides and angles when rotating or flipping.

      Very cool website.  This could be a place to discuss African American scientist, George Alcorn.  (invented the Imaging XRay Spectrometer.)  Black History Month opportunity

    VERY cool Earth Science/Space crossover project.  Students can send in a rock from their area, and NASA will use a special tool (like the one on the Mars Exploration Rovers) to tell you what it's made of.  Students could compare rocks on Earth to the rocks found on Mars.   Class can view and print various rock pictures from this website and create their own rock book, differentiating by ability.  (could be categorized by color, composition, geographic location, etc.)  It can be expanded as needed.  Kindergarten example would be to create a journal entitled "My Rock Collection."  They would find pictures of rocks that are blue, red, yellow, green, purple, etc and categorize them.

This activity can be modified for gifted students by having them record their predictions about which particles will sink and which particles will float, rather than solely making the observations. This activity can also be modified for older grades by having them do the same thing. The older students can also be told to gather material that is sand, silt, and clay, and try to keep these in separate jars.

    Students gather dirt samples from different outdoor areas and fill a jar with their dirt samples. The teacher will add water until the jar is two-thirds full and the students will take turns shaking their jar for two minutes. Each group will allow the contents in their jar to settle for fifteen to thirty minutes. Have the students make observations about how the dirt settled. The heaviest pieces of soil will settle first. Have the students identify the different-sized particles.

This activity can be modified for ELL students, gifted students, etc. by using fewer shapes, as well as shapes that are easier to identify. In the other sense, it can be modified to include more shapes that are more difficult to identify. This activity could also be used in other subject areas, such as science. It could be used to identify different classifications of plants and animals. It could also be used in foreign language. The students could read a vocabulary word in the foreign language, and then have to say the correct vocabulary work in English.

    Children make a game board displaying different shapes they should know (polygon, quadrilateral, parallelogram, etc.). Each child roles the die and moves that number of spaces. If that player can correctly identify the shape in their space, they roll again. The first one to the end and back wins!

    Fractions with color tiles.  Allows students to record their findings on graph paper.  Make a game of it by trading papers, and allowing the other student to attempt to build the other student's fraction bar without peeking at the answer.

Students could also find the area of the sides or the perimeter. This activity could also be used when students do not understand the concept of volume. You could start the activity very slow with simply finding the volume of one cube and then gradually make the volumes more complex.

      Make sure to emphasize the need to keep careful records as that is what makes this activity appropriate for teaching the Nature of Science.  This activity is excellent for showing children the value of records as it utilizes information from 50 years ago.  Discovering patterns and trends is also very appropriate in this area of study.  Creating a presentation of the information would offer a chance to incorporate different multiple intelligences.
