I just came across a comparison of Diigo to several similar services, "Streamline It Part I: Diigo or Bust" http://www.bretagdesigns.com/technologist/?p=531. Diigo came out on top, according to the author, lacking just one feature that another (Zotero ) offers: citation management, for scholarly researchers.

So, Maggie & Diigo crew, imagine lacking NONE of the key features of another service, by incorporating citation management! The database aspect is somewhat feasible with Diigo now, but rather awkward, by tagging an article 'author:smith_j', 'title:xxx', 'year:2004', etc. No way to make a bibliography from the tags, however. I haven't yet looked into exporting to Zotero, but how nice to have it all in one place!

    keep up the good work

I use Zotero (all the time) and it is great at citations (fast and very easy). Diigo is better at the integration, communication and most everything else.

Please Kings and Queens of Diigo add Citation list to the tags. it is just a reformatted report from what you already have with the date of the post added in... I think many scholarly writers would flock to your site.

    Please, Please, Please.

    Thank you!

    This would be excellent!

I'm not sure if it makes sense to have diigo try to capture all this data about authors, title, date etc in the main UI however -- but perhaps if there were standardized tags like the ones davido suggested, you could do this through the existing export functionality.

You would need to add a few things:

    1) a way to export the bookmarks from a selected tag or list or group -- similar to the current export feature

    2) Improve the RSS/Xml export feature:
    * Tags should be CATEGORY elements, rather than as text in the description field
    * The Description element should only have the comments and/or annotations
    * Each bookmark should have it's own pubDate set
    * You should add the dc namespace, and specify the dc:creator on each link (particularly important for exporting bookmarks from groups)
    * The GUID should be set to the diigo annotated link (which is unique, I believe)

    3) Some XSL stylesheets could then be created for the RSS files which could format them according to MLA rules or whatever ;-)

Thank you for the feedback Joel!

I would rather have the output come right from Diigo because then i am not playing with the export file. Like Zotero the output would be so fast and we could write so much better.

Nice ideas! It occurs to me that another, potentially very powerful, option would be to add "simultaneous bookmark to Zotero" to Diigo, along with del.icio.us, etc. This would allow use of Zotero's citation functions and Diigo's many others funcs--sort of a mash-up. It would beat an export solution by automating individual 'exports' with each new b'mark.

However, it would need to be a two-way sync to be truly useful--otherwise it would create more versions (and more crazy-making!)

Ok. As so many guys want it, we will look into the citation management feature.

That would be fantastic. It's about the only thing that Diigo still lacks, for me. We've been recommending Furl and similar bookmarking services to our students for years, with the citation features being a big plus. Using several bookmarking and citation services (Furl, LibraryThing, Zotero, Diigo etc) because they all have one feature that we really need but that the others lack is a huge hassle. We could switch to Diigo only if it can do academic citations. Keep up the good work!

I would like to join all the others. If you are aiming at the education sector as well, a citation management features are a must. That would really help. Thanks!!

    Peace.
