10 years of best sellers how the landscape has changed - 0 views

  •
In this Article Minzesheimer discusses Oprah Winfrey's effect on the popular things to read in America. The best sellers have been influenced hugely over the years. The article discussing J.K. Rowling's influence and Oprah's influence all in the same article. This shows me how relevant Oprah has been in the reading of our country. To be put in the same category as the writer of Harry Potter, she must be making a big effect. The article mentions Oprah as being "publishing's darling" and goes into talking about the Oprah effect. This article gives good background information on the effects Oprah has made in reading over the years.

Adolescent Religiosity and School Contexts - 0 views

  •
Adolescence is a period of great intellectual development that holds a lasting, lifelong influence. The authors examine the degree to which a school's religious affiliation and contextual teaching influence the development of adolescent belief systems and attitudes. The researchers find that the religious tenor of the school is incredibly influential in shaping student worldviews. Because religion and science are often viewed as diametrically opposed, I'd like to take this data a little further and ask, to what degree does this trend impede or facilitate scientific literacy?

Teaching Evolutionary Biology: Pressures, Stress, and Coping - 0 views

  •
The teaching of such a controversial social issue as evolution in the classroom presents difficulties to instructors, both on personal and professional levels. Griffith and Brem examined fifteen Arizona biology teachers, pulling their experiences from focus groups, interviews, and surveys. The study contains a great deal of anecdotal information dealing with both internal and external influences on instructors' teaching methods. This research investigates a whole new realm of the issue as it pertains to literacy by looking directly at those who control the flow of information and those who influence it. However, the researchers make little conclusive headway, suggesting simply that instructors should be made more comfortable with the topic by having access to better information and resources. Ultimately, the personal experiences are telling of the political climate and social stressors.

Oprah's influence - 0 views

This article gives good information about the about of books that Oprah Winfrey has made successful. The 48 books that she promoted, at least 650,000 copies of each were sold. The point of this article was to talk about how crazy it is that people can be influenced so greatly by Oprah. It is helpful to me with my paper because it shows how much of a powerful person Oprah is and it cannot be denied! She is undeniably the most influential person on TV.

The authors of this article work to express how huge of a deal Oprah Winfrey is in our reading world. They point out how in the years that Oprah talked about her book club weekly on her show; all of the books were on America's top 150! This is a huge point to support my claim of influence that Oprah has over us. This article was extremely helpful also because there were a lot of graphs that showed the huge relationship between Oprah's announcement and ranking of book. The article gives many more stats and examples of influence and will be very useful to me in my paper.

Gender, the Media, and the Presidential Candidates - 0 views

  •
This article discusses the most recent presidential election and gender bias words used in the media against Hilary Clinton. In many cases she was referred to as "bitch". People often focus on her negative influence and the fact she is a women in the media instead of the positive things she has done. This is very much an opinion piece but shows a different side of the argument. I can use this in my paper to show how gender bias literacy can be used in the media to help persuade voters to vote a certain way. This also shows how by discriminating by race can take away from the positive qualities because the media is to focused on the sex of the person. I can use this example to prove this.

Crossing the Information Highway: The Web of Meanings and Bias in Global Media - 0 views

Semali describes literacy and the teaching of literacy. Semali states that many people are subconsciously gender bias because of things they see. For example, in advertising, a women cleaning the house instead of a man may help support a more gender bias role. Every part of the media has some sort of bias if it does not seem obvious or relevant. This article is relevant to my research because although it is not directly related to politics, it shows how the media can influence people easily. The media is the key reason why a politician wins an election. If the media can control gender bias, then it is more likely to affect other people. The media can control how people are perceived and in this case, men and women.

Fast and Frugal Food Choices: Uncovering Individual Decision Heuristics - 0 views

  •
Scheibehenne conducted computerized surveys in a mall food court in Berlin, Germany. In a controlled setting, 20 different platter options of food were presented and customers were able to choose their meal freely. After choosing, they completed a computerized survey called an FCQ of food choice questionnaire. The unique purpose of this study was to determine the level in which humans make food choices based on heuristics, or "rule of thumb" choices. Interestingly, the results from this study show that the heuristic choices that humans make are just as significant as any other reason for making food decisions. This suggests that nutrition labels on a cereal box, for example, may not be influencing humans as much as the heuristic approach to food choice.

disciplinary in urban city schools - 0 views

  •
The authors Cartledge and Lo explain the discipline problems teacher's deal with in Urban Schools. Many factors influence children in urban school districts to act up in the classroom. They conducted a research program where they selected school H, which consisted of low-income students that were not reaching academic standards. The program recorded the number of disciplinary actions teachers took towards the students. The results showed that more than 50% of students received discipline in one year of teaching, which takes away from their education time. The authors make some significant points, but more can be determined from this study. By looking at the study, people can infer that because of the high disciplinary problems in urban schools that it affects their academics. This can be because of their lives at home and what students go through with their families.

This article discusses Oprah as 20 to 100 times more of a powerful influence than any other media personality. This is interesting to see how popular she really is with our country and how Oprah connects readers and sells books like no one has ever been able to do before. The article brings up her powerful line "Read this book." When she says this people do it! It will be a good article to get information out of about how people are affected.

Mitchard's book went from 100,000 sales to 900,000 when Oprah talked about it on her show. The new authors are very appreciative and surprised at the effect that Oprah has had on their careers.
