Gefilus MAX® - 0 views

  •
Valio Gefilus® MAX has been shown in tests to calm a stressed stomach. Valio Gefilus® MAX products contain a combination of four functional bacterial strains or probiotics. The core of the probiotic combination is Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG (LGG®, ATCC 53103), familiar from other Valio Gefilus® products. LGG® is the most researched probiotic strain in the world and is known particularly for its effect in strengthening immunity. It has been suggested that a combination of several probiotic strains alleviates the symptoms of stressed stomach more efficiently. In addition to LGG®, Gefilus® MAX products contain three other functional bacterial strains (L. rhamnosus Lc705, Propionibacterium freudenreichii ssp. shermanii JS, Bifidobactetrium animalis subsp. lactis Bb-12®). Together these four probiotic strains form a unique combination that strengthens immunity and calms a stressed stomach.

Vitamin D Status: Measurement, Interpretation, and Clinical Application - 0 views

Vitamin D status: measurement, interpretation, and clinical application. Holick MF. Ann Epidemiol. 2009 Feb;19(2):73-8. Epub 2008 Mar 10. Review. PMID: 18329892 Conclusion The only way to determine whether a person is vitamin D deficient or sufficient is to measure their circulating level of 25(OH)D. There are a variety of assays used to measure 25(OH)D. The radioimmunoassays and competitive protein binding assays for 25(OH)D are useful in detecting vitamin D deficiency and sufficiency. However, these assays are fraught with technical difficulties, especially if they are not run routinely (Fig. 4) (33). Several reference laboratories have now switched to LC-MS ,which measures both 25(OH)D2 and 25(OH)D3 quantitatively. The total 25(OH)D, i.e., 25(OH)D2 plus 25(OH)D3, is what physicians need to be aware of for their patients. A level >30 ng/mL is

Serum vitamin D concentrations among elderly people in Europe : The Lancet - 0 views

van der Wielen RP, Lowik MR, van den BH, de Groot LC, Haller J, Moreiras O, van Staveren WA (1995) Serum vitamin D concentrations among elderly people in Europe. Lancet 346: 207-210 These findings show that free-living elderly Europeans, regardless of geographical location, are at substantial risk of inadequate vitamin D status during winter and that dietary enrichment or supplementation with vitamin D should be seriously considered during this season.

Prevalence of Vitamin D Insufficiency in Brazilian Adolescents - 0 views

Prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in Brazilian adolescents. Peters BS, dos Santos LC, Fisberg M, Wood RJ, Martini LA. Ann Nutr Metab. 2009;54(1):15-21. Epub 2009 Feb 5. PMID: 19194104 DOI: 10.1159/000199454 CONCLUSIONS: The present study suggests that even in a sunny climate like Brazil the prevalence of vitamin D insufficiency in adolescents is high. Most likely this is due to low intakes of vitamin D in this group. Due to the limited extent of natural dietary sources of vitamin D, a policy of vitamin D food fortification should be considered in the future, and in the meantime greater use of vitamin D supplements in this population group should be encouraged to provide the increased amounts of this essential nutrient for optimal health.

Use of cod liver oil during the first year of life is associated with lower risk of childhood-onset type 1 diabetes: a large, population-based, case-control study. Stene LC, Joner G; Norwegian Childhood Diabetes Study Group. Am J Clin Nutr. 2003 Dec;78(6):1128-34. PMID: 14668274 Conclusion: Cod liver oil may reduce the risk of type 1 diabetes, perhaps through the antiinflammatory effects of long-chain n-3 fatty acids.

A randomised comparison of increase in serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D concentration after 4 weeks of daily oral intake of 10 microg cholecalciferol from multivitamin tablets or fish oil capsules in healthy young adults. Holvik K, Madar AA, Meyer HE, Lofthus CM, Stene LC. Br J Nutr. 2007 Sep;98(3):620-5. Epub 2007 Apr 24. PMID: 17456248 We conclude that fish oil capsules and multivitamin tablets containing 10 microg cholecalciferol administered over a 4-week period produced a similar mean increase in s-25(OH)D concentration.

Low-carbohydrate diets increase LDL: debunking the myth | The Blog of Michael R. Eades... - 0 views

  •
This week sees the publication of yet another study showing the superiority of the low-carbohydrate diet as compared to the low-fat diet. This study, published in the prestigious American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, demonstrates that subjects following the low-carb diet experience a decrease in triglyceride levels and an increase in HDL-cholesterol (HDL) levels; and that these changes are accompanied by a minor increase in LDL-cholesterol (LDL), which prompts the authors to issue a caveat. Yes, although just about all the parameters that lipophobes worry about improved with the low-carb diet, the small increase in LDL has caused great concern and has prompted the authors to gravely announce that this small increase is troublesome and should be monitored closely in anyone who may be at risk for heart disease. Since most people who go on low-carb diets do so to deal with obesity issues, and since obesity is a risk factor for heart disease, it would appear that this small increase in LDL often seen in those following a low-carb diet could put these dieters at risk. Does it? We'll see.

Measuring 25-hydroxyvitamin D in a clinical environment: challenges and needs. Hollis BW. Am J Clin Nutr. 2008 Aug;88(2):507S-510S. Review. PMID: 18689391 In this article, I provide an overview of the techniques available for measuring 25(OH)D, compare these techniques with one another, and assess their clinical utility. I also briefly discuss the stability of 25(OH)D in biological media and present an overview of the Vitamin D External Quality Assessment Scheme.
