"On the surface the problem with wearables - and smartwatches in particular - is that the technology just isn't mature enough to support the ambitions. Screen resolutions may have improved, processors made more efficient and sensors miniaturised, but it's still hugely challenging technically to squeeze everything into a surface area the size of a watch face - and to keep it all going for any reasonable length of time."

Our students want to be creative, collaborate, utilize technology for learning, connect with their peers in other countries, understand the messages that media convey, and solve real-world problems.  Schools and systems of education that do not embrace digital learning and place a high emphasis on standardization will always fail to resonate with our students

The sci-fi future where the co-evolution of human and machine pushes us towards a singularity is nearly upon us, but before we step into the realm of the cyborg, we're going to have to first get comfortable with the idea of wearable technology. We need look no further than Google Glass, which has occupied many a newspaper inch this past year, but the futuristic glasses are just the tip of the wearable tech iceberg. Analysts from research and analytics firm IHS predict that demand for wearable gadgets will go from 14 million to 200 million devices over the next two years.

Patti Hart, CEO of International Game Technology, says that all too often, executives try to avoid making mistakes. That is a mistake.

"Alongside the expansion of the social web came a generation of students who have never known life without the technologies that many of us have come to depend on. Although there are significant within-group exceptions related to socioeconomic status and ethnic background, today's traditional-aged students are more comfortable than any other generation in history with expanding their lives by living in both physical and digital spaces."

The rise of the social Web has led to a fundamental shift in the way businesses of all sizes engage with their customers. Rather than focusing on "touch points" during the marketing and sales process, they're using social technologies to form meaningful, ongoing relationships that involve frequent online interactions, oftentimes through social channels.  

"The idea of social business is to apply social software to improve and accelerate how work gets done on the inside of the firewall. Whereas social branding -- blogs, wikis, bookmarks, videos, message boards, Facebook, Twitter, and similar tools -- is increasingly being used by companies to communicate with the external world, what's often missing is the application of those same tools and techniques to create an open, supportive culture internally."

I was talking with industry peer Michael Brito (former Intel and now at Edelman) about the maturity of the space at Cisco's social media week yesterday, and we both agree this space is just heating up.

Our industry is afflicted with shiny object syndrome, a focus on the new tools, without thinking about the content that will drive it. As we mature and the tools make it easier to share information, companies need to be extra sensitive to the content that will be shared, both that's created by the brand, and the customer.
