Fashion Insiders Weigh In: Can Your Style Survive Google Glass? - 0 views

  •
There are two particularly interesting things about the video. The first is that precisely one other person is seen wearing Glass, and it's a fellow sky-diver covered in safety gear. The second is that one of the shots is from the POV of a model on a runway. We suspect that the first fact belies the message of the second: Runway model or no, Google Glass isn't all that great to look at. It's clear that Google is conscious of the fashion implications of a gadget that you wear on your face, and they are trying to position it as a high end item of style. After Sergey Brin jumped out of a zeppelin for I/O, the next place Google debuted the device was New York Fashion Week 2012.

Before and after: Britney Spears releases unretouched Candie's ads - 0 views

Photoshop is a popular topic of discussion here in Fashion + Beauty, and I know that some readers grow tired of hearing about it. We should just assume that all ads and fashion spreads are altered to some degree, right?

Social media coaching for faculty - 2 views

  •
For the last two weeks, I've been engaged in a very interesting experiment. Five faculty members from the Fashion and Apparel department have agreed to explore social media for personal productivity, professional development, curriculum redesign, and program promotion.

Thanks Mathieu for sharing the presentation with me so I can catch up with the rest of the class. It's going to be a very useful learning process. I also think your presentation to FASH 325 would be good to give to students earlier in their UD career. I was thinking about FASH 210, a course on FASH sustainability and business ethics in the Fashion Industry. These sessions will make us more sustainable!
  •
Thanks Martha. I think you're right that students need to be exposed earlier to this, but I also think that we could chunk the session up in little parts, where I wouldn't necessarily need to be directly involved.

"While Amazon has had some success in fashion with Zappos.com, Endless.com, MyHabit.com and Shopbop, it has yet to achieve the level of dominance that it has in other product categories it has targeted."

Don't Kill Fashion Week - Reinvent It! - 0 views

  •
Fashion Week needs reinvention. It's a perfect opportunity for innovators to come up with big ideas to 1) reach more of the world instantaneously and simultaneously; 2) unleash designers' creativity via animation, film, 3-D printing and interactivity; and 3) drive the discovery of new designers.

Influencers Are The New Brands - 0 views

  •
"Influencers are the golden children of marketing strategies right now. Rebecca Minkoff even put influencers front and center in her New York Fashion Week runway show, featuring several popular fashion bloggers-including Chriselle Lim and Arielle Charnas-as models in her Greene Street production. Influencers are the new celebrity endorsements."

The Science of Sentiment - 4 views

  •
"As a rule, fashionistas are fickle. So when merchants make trend-right buying decisions and the fashion-obsessed open their wallets for the season's must-haves, retailers score fast turns and fat margins. But when retailers get it wrong, stores are awash in markdowns and the bottom line takes a hit."

Apparently This Matters: The Hug Me Jacket - 0 views

  •
"But this week, it seemed like the internet went crazy over one particular jacket. And, amazingly, it isn't even made out of kittens. Or "Twilight" books. Or Katy Perry. No, it's much more interesting than that. I'm referring to the wildly bizarre Hug Me Jacket, conceptualized by up-and-coming Macanese fashion designer Si Chan."

Model Behavior Storms Social Media - 0 views

  •
"Runway models, long cast as expressionless figures showcasing Fashion Week's finest wears, are finding their own voice on social media. Sometimes that can land them big endorsement deals. Or, it can backfire. Leslie Yazel explains. Photo: facebook.com/officialKateUpton."

3D-printed lingerie hits the catwalk - 2 views

  •
A collaboration between Victoria's Secret and Swarovski has seen 3D-printed lingerie hit the catwalk in New York. Architect Bradley Rothenberg was invited to help realize the one-of-a-kind design and 3D printing specialist Shapeways provided the technical know-how. The result is a sparkling, snowflake-inspired corset that provided one of the highlights during this year's Victoria's Secret Fashion Show.

Social media efforts are in full swing, too-they have been for the past month.  But is all the chatter effective? Does it matter how many people you reach if you don't reach the right people?

Are social media making the resume obsolete? - 1 views

  •
"Some job experts say we're already there. With news that Facebook might be joining the ranks of online-employment brokers, it's looking more and more like the old-fashioned resume might be growing obsolete."
