    Wireless networking is a important application of computer networks. And this news is very interesting. Because with my own experiences during traveling, I found out that a lot of passengers do not want to turn-off their phones during their flying time, some may choose to turn to the fight mode. And when I took Qatar airline, I found out that they install the wireless services for people to send message or make phone calls. That was the first time I experience this kind of service, I was very excited but calmed down when I saw the expensive fees I need to pay if I want to use. So I think it is time for FAA to look ways which can satisfy travelers' demand through possible new allowances.

    I am one of those Americans that have a hard time disconnecting from technology when boarding an aircraft. I usually fly American Airlines and a majority of their airplane offer Wi-Fi available for purchase, I don't mind paying $12.95 so that I can stay entertain, I can't wait to hear the chime at 10,000 feet followed with the message from the flight crew telling me that "it is now safe to use electronic devices." On May 16th, 2012, Virgin Atlantic announced that passengers would be able use cell phones onboard the airplane utilizing VoIP.     Great article on the rise of mobile payment systems and how businesses who in the past may have been cash only or otherwise are seeing increased sales as the ability to take credit card payments with little hardware and software infrastructure costs. Down the street from me is probably my favorite Rib joint in town, Uncle Rodney's House of Ribs is the name. I love that place, but rarely go because they are a cash only business due in large part to the fact that the owner does not wish to pay for wireless or otherwise internet related services to make his business able to accept credit cards. What are everyone's thought to the increased use of mobile payment systems for restaurants and other businesses?

    I think mobile payment systems are great. I personally have not used them very much but I think they would be very handy at events. I am a Timberwolves season ticket holder and my seats are close to the court where a serving staff is able to get food and beverages for you. Fans are able to pay with credit cards but the server has to take your card to the back area to ring everything up. If the servers were able to carry mobile credit card readers they would be able to speed up transactions and take more orders. It would be a benefit to everyone - the team would be able to sell more items, the servers would make more tips, and the fans would be more satisfied. If someone wanted to keep an open tab until the end of the game I'm sure there could be an app for adding items to a specific seat location instead of doing multiple credit card transactions. I'm sure mobile payment devices are being used by staff at many events and I'm a little surprised it hasn't made it's way into the Target Center yet.

    It sounds great. I think it is convenience, cause I can pay by my phone whenever I need. But maybe the biggest problem is the security. How to guarantee it, we always use mobile connect ing internet which increase the danger coefficient.

    I like this idea of mobile payments. It saves business people time and money which they were supposed to spend on the traditional way of credit card payment. It turns out more likely to be a self-monitored business transaction way. However, before signing the contract, the business owner should consider the security level of this payment method from the customers's standpoint. I'm pretty sure that some customers may feel weird and unsecured when they swipe their card on a mobile device.

    This is a fascinating article. On one hand I can absolutely see the benefits for a mobile business or a business that increases it's sales by accepting mobile payments. It also seems that security would be increased for the merchant as there is not much cash available on hand for petty thieves. The crooks of the future will need to be technologically sophisticated. The increased use of smart phones has greatly increased my small business as many of my customers make their purchases through their smart phones. My personal concern is that our country will see an increase in debt and over spending as purchasing with your credit card account becomes even easier. Will it even be possible to pay with cash in the future or will it all be electronic? Also, what happens if your cell phone is stolen and all of your financial world is on there. Do these scanning systems have much security if there is not a credit card to verify a signature against? Is everything stored in cyber space where the phone thief cannot reach it without expensive technical knowledge?

    This is an interesting article, and it is quite amazing to see how the way of payment is drastically shifting with new technological devices such as smartphones, card readers. Just a couple of years ago, if I wanted to buy something online, I had to start my computer then go on whatever website I bought something from which took some time. Now, however, I don't even have to turn on my computer to purchase something on the web because I can buy many things through my smartphone whenever and wherever I want. It is a lot easier and faster than what it used to be.

    A digital solutions named Beyond Digital Solutions based in the United Kingdom provided a technology for an airport hotel to enable guests to check their flight status. The technology is being used at the Hampton by Hilton near the Luton Airport just north of London. The hotel "installed a digital screen in its reception area to provide live flight arrival and departure details." This system also allows guests of the hotel to check-in for flights and print boarding passes. The company Beyond Digital Solutions has provided other hospitality technology for the industry such as digital signing that helps to provide information for guests regarding the local area or activity schedules.  I personally believe this is a smart idea for an airport hotel. Having the ability to check a flight status before you leave the hotel can help guests decide if they need to leave or wait if their flight is delayed. When traveling abroad not all the time do I have access to an internet device or my smartphone, so I feel this would be convenient. If my flight is delayed for a longer period of time, I could have the ability to stay at the hotel longer if I did not want to wait at the airport for an extended period of time. Even when traveling in the United States not all the time do I think to check my flight status ahead of time. If I saw this screen I would have the option to check my flight status because it is right there in front of me. I hope to see a system like this added to more airport hotels in the future. I see this as a huge benefit to airport hotels.

Personally I use that time to relax but if I could use it to avoid an avid stamp collecting chatter box it would be worth it. There may be a small fee and possible sell of personal information to marketers but on a long haul flight sitting next to a like-minded individual might make all the difference in a good vs awkward ride. Very neat! Unfortunately, the fun and celebrations of the Christmas season are often dampened by the stressful experience of holiday air travel. ...

    WOW..That is a very interesting article. The "social seating" is a creative techonology with a great wish. But I think it is not a easy job to solve and avoid the negatives of this program. The article said the program is meant to align people of certain interests and is not meant to be a type of on-board dating service. No...No matter how many times the company emphasizes that the program is not on-board dating service, it would turn into a dating model.

    This seems like an idea that would be very popular, particularly with those who are addicted to facebook. I think it's creative and interesting in concept but I don't think I would even use it if it were free. I am pretty tall so getting an aisle or exit row seat is more important to me than who I sit by. Even if I travel with family or friends, I prefer to listen to music or catch up on reading when I fly. This is a pretty cool idea, but it's not for me.

    I agree with you Carl, great idea but not for me. I'd prefer physical comfort over social activity when it comes to flying. If you are the social butterfly who uses Facebook on a regular basis you are probably likely to introduce yourself to your seat mate anyways and strike up conversation. I like the mystery. However, crying babies are never fun so I can see how some people may use this to benefit their sanity.

    I feel that an app that uses information from social media may be too personal for most. However I do see an opportunity from this idea. Airlines may consider adding an option for their passengers to select if they are travelling for business or pleasure. They could assign seat depending on the purpose of the passengers trip.

LightStay is the companies tracking system which will track the process of its donations. Hilton reached their five year goal to reduce their waste by 20% which turned out to be two years ahead of schedule. LightStay is the company's tracking system which tracks their donations to Good360. When I first read this article I thought I was going to read something about Hilton's products going overseas like we watched on 60 minutes. I'm happy to see these mattresses aren't going overseas to harm people. I recently just bought a new mattress and the company that picked up my old mattress and they were going to recycle it. After watching the 60 Minutes I will always inquire about such recycling. I was told they clean the old mattresses and donate them to families in need and shelters. After watching the video clip I wish I would have asked further questions about the donations to be sure. As a consumer I would like to hear more businesses talk about the different programs they offer to go green and recycle. As someone in the multi-family housing industry I think recycling and going green is an area we need to focus on. As a Hilton Diamond Member I'm happy to see the Hilton is trying to go green. This article was from 2012, so I'm looking forward to see what they will be doing in the future.

Out of the travel agents they surveyed, 66% said that they were aware of the "promotional messages requested addition information by looking at the screen attached to he promotional message." From this survey it showed that promotional messages are an excellent way to reach travel agents and from reaching the agent, they also reaching the customer, it's a win-win reaction.

    I've encountered this issue at numerous hotels in my travels. I would be up for paying an increased fee for better wi-fi if I had assurances that that was indeed what I was getting. I think that is the direction most properties will end up going as more people invest in data heavy machines such as tablet pc's, macbook air's and similar products. When I travel I need wi-fi access in my room as well as the conference or meeting rooms, and its hit or miss most times. You would think that they would have an idea of what level of bandwith is needed for 200+ internet marketing professionals but often times that is not the case. I am looking to invest in mobile hotspots such as mi-fi's or similar services provided by AT&T or Verizon, as the convenience of knowing there is a connection I can trust is well worth the investment.

As the rise of smart phones and ultra-lightweight laptops case the bandwidth problems. I think the hotel can deal with this problems by create various account levels for guests, stuff and visitors. The hotel can allow the visitors to use free WiFi and provide high level account to overnight guests.

    I personally prefer to use WIFI in my own room when I visit a hotel because I have more privacy. Some hotels they may offer free/complimentary WIFI in the public area, for example, the lobby, the lounge, etc. At the same time, to limit the overuse of public WIFI, the WIFI in the guests' room are charged by different time period and the length of using the WIFI. It seems to be not fair to those business people who require internet all day long. However, it lowers the expense of the WIFI service and improves the guests' satisfaction of the internet service.

    I am all for getting rid of hotel room key cards. I have the worst time keeping track of them. I also find your comments on the generation gap to be compelling. My Dad is terrified of anything electronic. I cannot imagine that he would easily trust technology to check him into a hotel and do the basic functions of customer service. He would walk right past the touch screen computers and ask the desk receptionist for area attractions. I do see the decrease in human interaction as a negative. I personally enjoy the opinions of local people when it comes to ideas about where to eat or what to see. All of this rapid technological change can be intimidating, but I am sure that once we all grow accustomed to the new ways of staying in a hotel, then the old key cards will seem like dinosaurs.

    This is an informative article, and I also understand Mary's opinion. Over decades, technology has rapidly advanced and it seems to be quite hard to catch up with all the new technology released quickly. For example, I stayed in a hotel called Aria, one of the newly built hotels in Las Vegas, and the hotel is equipped with state-of-the-art room technology (not just room but all over the hotel). To get into a room, unlike other hotels, I just put a room key on a sensor instead of inserting a key; as well as, I just touched a button right next to the door for privacy instead of putting the "Do not Disturb" card on a door knob. This is not something really huge, however this is how hotels are technologically changing. As a person studying Hospitality Management, the change was very impressive, but at the same time, it was intimidating. Obviously, our parents generation should have harder time to use new technology and/or to get used it than I do. I totally agree that there should be a balance between technology advancement and human interation.

    Yes I have ordered flowers online before through 1-800 Flowers because I needed flowers delivered in another state and I was not familiar with the florists in the area. I trusted the Teleflora company (1-800 Flowers) to have the same quality of flowers in all locations but this is simply not true. I was very disappointed on several occasions by having wilted old flowers in small arrangements delivered. Not only is it embarrassing but it is frustrating to the consumer having paid so much money and not been happy with the product. I do not use these online companies anymore. I go to the florist websites and go by word of mouth which is time consuming (something I was hoping to avoid by using the online florist in the first place). That is why I bring up the question of how this FloristAdvisor differs from other companies and how are they succeeding? Bing I like to go to the supermarket and make my own arrangements if they receiver of my intended bouquet is close by. The author opens the article discussing the main reasons we still continue to use seatbelts; even though they aren't the most comfortable or fashionable items to use, they still do their jobs in saving our lives when it comes to a collision of some sort. The author is in favor of GDS and makes the claim that like seatbelts, the GDS may not be the most up-to-date or may not appear to be as nice as other local systems to each individual airline, but they get the job done and there are no other systems out there like it that we know of (no other systems that do everything he GDS system does that is). The main topic of discussion that the article is concerned with is the recent decision made by the company Lufthansa to start charging its customers an additional surcharge for using GDS systems instead of going through its own system. The author clearly makes it know that she doesn't believe Lufthansa when they say they are charging this additional surcharge because GDS is the most expensive channel to go through. "Because there's no reason to think that an airline should expect to distribute its products without any cost, Lufthansa's recent gambit seems more of a tactic for increasing lagging direct distribution... The importance of having the proper securities in place, the proper malware and security software is really important. Having had a catering company for 20 years I had to do PCI compliance tests every 6 months and for years I just handed it over to my IT to do the test. Sounds like a great concept; it uses mobile devices, which most people have, to send an alert once shoppers are within range advising that bargains are available.  The consumer then has the choice to accept (or not) the message, which could be a simple discount or even an interactive game.  The consumer's privacy is protected as it is at no cost to them.  This can potentially increase retailer sales, at a lower costs, and produces data on consumer buying habits.  Win-Win. The issue I have with this is the overall multitude of alerts received from various retails.  I am not concerned about privacy issues; it is more of an annoyance issue.

    I actually like this idea because I shop aimlessly. When I'm in the radius of a sale I get excited!!. It makes it easy to choose which store I will go into. It will be great if you can turn the alert on and off. On days I'm not shopping I don't want the alerts to go off. That can be distracting and annoying.

I can relate to those people that have had credit card numbers stolen, because it has happened to my husband and me, and it is a horrible feeling trying to get your life back on track and recover your money.  I think it would be a great idea, with some research, to get the point to point encryption technology in a field where credit cards are used so often, not only to cover the business (hotel), but also to protect the guest, so they feel at easy when they travel on vacation or business.  The overall point of this technology is to encrypt the information as close to the point of entry, i.e. the swiping of the credit card, as possible. This would in turn "significantly reduce a merchant's card data environment", as the program would encrypt the information so that hackers cannot access the customer's information. As I mentioned earlier, questions should be asked before buying this technology, as there is always something new on the market that may be better. Credit cards are not always swiped, but can also be manually placed in the system, so you want to make sure, that both transactions are protected. Overall, the establishment should always be concerned about the customer and their safety, whether physical or mental and always be prepared for the worse.

    Marilyn, This is a great article and I wish this type of technology was everywhere because like yourself I have credit card numbers stolen before and it is a long process to end that. Working in the hospitality industry we would need to make sure that it is everywhere that a credit card is entered whether that being swiped in house, typed in the system manually, or even processed via the internet. In the hospitality industry we should be very aware of our guests safety and like you mention it is not only just physical safety that is a concern it is the mental state as well making sure the guests credit cards are safe and do not have a chance of being stolen by a hacker.     Great article! Personally after being a victim of credit card fraud, I'm very apprehensive of where I shop, who handles my card and how long it takes them to return it. I recently cancelled a large purchased after the cashier insisted on rubbing my card number on the reciept after the transactions had be approved. In my mind, I was thinking "If I let you do that, then I've open the door for anyone to charge thousand of dollars. I don't think so." As a manager, who hands credit card numbers for manual input, I'm very cautious of them and want to insure that they don't get into the wrong hand. Aftern each transactions is approved, that number is shredded and the credit card machine is batched out. Companies don't realize how important it is to PCI compliant. The risk in exposing sensitive information of our clients and customers can cost thousand of dolllars in fines and fee, in addition to the lost of that customer/client.

    Marilyn, Great Article...as a Front Desk Manager, it is my responsibility to randomly check our computers to ensure employees are not placing USB driver to collect data from our system. Our company has taking this a step further by putting metal locked case around the PC to avoid possible fraudulent activity. If we have to open a PC, we must log it to show proof why a PC became unlock. Companies should adopt similar procedures to protect the consumers/guests. Nelson

    Actually I use two internet browsers on my computer. The Firefox and the 360. They have their own advantages and I use them to open separate pages. And when I used to internship in business center in hotel, I found it is really necessary because according to kinds of requirements from customer, only one browser sometimes can not satisfy customers. So no matter for what reason, for customer service, for information collected, or development of hotel, there should have at least two browsers.

    Most of the time, two browsers work perfectly fine on the laptop. I think it's necessary to install to browsers just in case one of them doesn't work fine sometimes. However, the two browsers on my laptop would conflict with each other. There was a period that I could not open them at the same time otherwise my laptop will completely shut down. For the hospitality industry, installing two browsers may benefit the guests. It saves guests time and money when they use the computer devices with two browsers because it provide them two ways to browse the internet.

    I totally understand that there are lots of benefits to have at least two browsers. Actually I used to have more than two. And I was happy at that time that I have more than one browser because my Internet Explorer was infected by a virus and my computer would shut down by itself with no reason each time I opened the explorer. I didn't have time to fix my computer and remove the virus because I was preparing a final paper and I had to turn it in next day. So I just easily searched for information through other website browsers. For a hotel, that would be more important to keep the daily operation smooth with more than one browser in case that one of them was not working.
