"If I am going to be drowned--if I am going to be drowned--if I am going to be drowned, why in the name of the seven mad gods who rule the sea, was I allowed to come thus far to contemplate sand and trees?"

How does this relate to Crane's worldview and the fate of the oiler?
  • Zilin Wang

Through this convercation, I found that he is an arrogant man and that is the one of the factors of his death. Arrogant people often do not have a good result, because arrogant people always don't know how to ask for help.
  • Bryan Wang

From the passage, he said he was the strongest guy in the four people, and he is very good at the drown. He think he could fight with the seven mad man which nature. He flaunt his superiority to everyone and seek to do others down. What more he is a arrogant people who thought he could help everyone pass of the hard time, and he did not need others' help.

This quote showed that world is not fair, because fate sent people to that hell's situation and not let them die. They can only see the island but it almost impossible to reach the island. Oiler died, but he is hardest worker and best swimmer. So the world is not fair for him which makes it relate to Crane's worldview.

Crane's worldview is that what you get may not equal to what you thinik you should get. In this quote, it says the feeling of discontented, angry and despair from the members on the boat. The oiler is the best swimmer among these 4 people on the boat. But only he died at the end, it definitely shows the worldview that Crane's has.

Stephen Crane's world view is that no matter how close you get to success, you can always fail. This quote relates to the oiler because, the oiler was the strongest swimmer out of all four men and he was the first to reach the shore, but he was the only one to die.
  • Avery Booth

This quote says a lot of general things, like the world isnt fair, you cant always reach success, etc. Personally i think there is a deeper meaning to it deep down. I think that this quote is saying there is not perfection. No body's perfect. imperfection is perfection. He feels like why out of all the people qas he chosen? because he doesnt feel like hes the best? well that is exactly why he was chosen.

Stephen crane is saying that you might not get to that place that you thought you would have gotten to. the Oiler was the only one who seemed to have a high chance of survival but at then end he was the only one to die.

This sentence express the Stephen Crane's worldview that is sometimes the real life easy fall from hopeful to hopeless. Therefore crane used the oiler' died to prove this truth.
  • Dean Tian

Crane's worldview want to show this world is not fair, oiler never give up and helped other people, also he is good at swimming, but in the end, he died. That shows Crane's worldview is negative, he does not believe people who are pay for somethings will be rewarded.

he really is just telling the truth. i mean the oiler was the most important person i believe in the story. This shows cranes view on how the world is not fair, u could be the nicest most genuin person and you might die tomorrow.

Crane's worldview is that no matter how we are close to success, some unexpected things will happen. Then we will fail. The oiler is strong than other people in this boat. But he was only one person to died. Meanwhile, Crane's worldview is that the world is unfair.
  • Gigi Chen

the oiler is the strangest one in the four people, he dead because he give up in the last second. The Crane's worldview is so positive and unfair, which is true, the world is act like that. Is no matter how hard you working on the road, if you give up in the last moment, you will dead. you need be keep it up, be patient of all the things you are doing.
  • Austin Makris

I believe this quote is Stephen Crane saying, if i am going to die here, why did the world let me come this far? I believe this relates to cranes worldview because it shows he believes the world is a harsh, cruel, and unfair/unreasonable place. It relates to the fate of the oiler in that even if you are the most capable, you may fail if you falter, or if you do not have a bit of good luck.
  • Yi Lin

This quote generally emphasize Stephen Crane's worldview, which satirize the unfairness, inhumanity and ruthless around people in the world, as well as he depicts the gap between the boat and beach by the quote, which indirectly represents the situation that sometimes people see the destination, but they can never get there no matter how hard they tried. In addition, the death of the oiler at the end of the story informs audiences the main idea of the story, which the world is thus unfair and ruthless, because the oiler, who works hard and loyal to everyone else on the boat, but he could not make his way to alive.
  • sam millard

What Crane is trying to comulicate through the oiler is that life is unfare and taughnts people with unreachable desires. Life can put you face to face with your lust, then pull it away without moving a finger.
  • Aidan Sperry

I think Crane has a pessimistic or maybe just a very realistic view of the world. The quote above represents the irony of them making it so far and the oiler dying when they are so close to the shore. And its messed up too but thats part of life and Crane's story is unlike so many with a happy ending, thats why this story is so fascinating, you kind of know its gonna happen, but you never really believe it till it happens. Cranes a crazy mofo.
  • aidan dorvee

I think crane has a very accurate view of the world and that is that you can be so close but still fail. Life does not normally have happy endings and the strongest man aboard their rafts is the only to die. This shows how life will not always be fair and that even the strongest can fall. I think crane is blunt, but still spot on.
  • Rich Ramirez

I think he has reason to be angry and upset, he can see land but he's on the verge of dying so it's it's such a tease. I don't know if anyone has been close to getting something and then just having it taken away from you but that's what this is but on a whole other level.
  • zach harrison

I believe that Crane has a view that the world is unfair, that you can give it your all and still fail. In the case of the Oiler, he was the strongest swimmer, the odds of survival where in his favor; yet despite this he still drowns.
  • Deker Adelman

I think he is saying that you the world isnt fair because he is saying that he made it so far and was so close yet still fail. they make it to view of land and the oiler who know ther most and dosent deserve to die dies.
  • Maryssa Haggett

This quote says that the world isn't fair, and it isn't fair for them to come this far enough and die. In the quote, it sounds like there mad and upset. people come or trie hard enough to get to something, and then all of the sudden, something bad happens and it never happens.
  • Jim Talbott

I want to say that his world view that no matter who you are, what your luck is, what you have down in life, that the world is very unpredictable and its a lot like a board game of chance, you can have the best odds in the game, but if it is your time to lose, you lose, theres know way around it, with no amount of skill or anything.
  • Daniel Shaw-Vicente

This quote relates to Crane's worldview and the fate of the oiler because it represent the fact that one can be so close to their hopes, dreams and goals and yet be so far due to the possibilities of what might go wrong. I think that this is a statement on the way that our American school system is currently operating due to the amount and importance of tests.
  • Pierce Tricarico

i think that he was saying, i know i am going to die one day, but why do i have to die today, in this way, being able to see land and fake hope there is a chance for survival. that nature was playing a trick on him
  • sam zanta

he is saying that sometimes life is unfair and even cruel
  • james lee

He is saying that life Is unfair and why would he get so far to just die now. I think this relates to the worldview of the oiler because no matter how good you are with out a bit of luck
    you can still fail
