#1 Peter E. Rowe on 09 Sep 13"Gazing up into the darkness I saw myself as a creature driven and derided by vanity; and my eyes burned with anguish and anger."
-
#2 Hang Zhao on 09 Sep 13The boy is angry, because he feels that he was shamed by the girl. He saw her was talking to other two men, when he arrived the bazaar.
-
#3 Ryan Moran on 09 Sep 13I think what this means is that the boy felt a lot of jealousy and anger. He felt these emotions because Mangan's Sister invited him to the bazaar in Araby and he thought it was sort of like a date. Little did he know that she just invited him there to try and sell him those two pots or other things. She was also openly flirting with those two other guys right in front of him. That is why he felt all those negative emotions at the end.

#4 Aidan Sperry on 10 Sep 13The gift he sees himself giving her is a ticket. In his fantasy he imagines himself finding a wonderful gift for her and somehow this will lead to a relationship or something, I'm not sure he really knows what. The gift represents much more than a material object, it becomes an idea which consumes his thoughts. This girl is so angelic and mysterious to him the gift and bazaar becomes his one material connection to her. When he arrives at the market and the stark reality of the bazaar procures itself, his fantasy is shattered. The perfect gift he foresees, the perfect world that was the bazaar, is dreary and desolate. His misconceptions tumble around him and the realization that the girl will never be his leaves him reeling and confused.

#6 tenzin crane on 10 Sep 13the boy has had his feelings switched from love/emptathy to hate and despair. and for once he thought something good was going to come up out of this crush/love, but nothing happened but having his own heart broken. i think he was definitely way to sensitive and to clingy to this girl. He was a pretty big loser.

#7 Jeans Jiaraksa on 10 Sep 13Mangan's sister is goin to break his heart. He is going to become depressed and very let down. The boy thought that he might have found his one true love, but at the end it only ended up to be another person just passing through his life.

#8 Gigi Chen on 10 Sep 13the boy is so so angry and don't know what he can say to the girl because he didn't buy a thing for her. He will nervous go back to the place where he live. He will star think about why he love her. when he found the reason he won't love the girl any more.

#9 xiaogang wu on 10 Sep 13The boy just realize that he does meaningless things just because a girl that he does not even talk to each other. He feel vanity, because that he is trying to buy a gift which is a material way to get a date chance. He believe that he meet a true love, but this dream has collapsed. So he felt anguish He felt anger, because he realized how naive he was and how shameful is that he is trying to use material way to get a date rather than know the girls first and it took long time to realize those things . He realized that he is too naive for a world like this.

#10 Yi Lin on 10 Sep 13I think he is going to get a real heart break by Mangan's sister, due to he did everything he could but nothing gets better about getting close to Mangan's sister. However, I think he is about realizing that nothing is gonna happen between the girl and himself just because he is too naive which caused him had a hope of dating with her.
-
#11 zeyuan tang on 10 Sep 13The boy was felt a lot jealousy and anger, because he think he want to bought something for the girl who he love that was peacockish and stupid. I think this is a good way to give us imaginary space after it.Maybe he going to say with the girl!
-
#12 Dow Drukker on 10 Sep 13The boy had such high hopes for his relationship with the girl, but after his poor experience at the bazaar his feelings flipped. He realized that this girl wasn't what he had imagined her in his dreams, and that upset the boy and angered him.
-
#13 Dean Tian on 10 Sep 13I think he was very angry and hesitate. He had a lot of anger at this time for what happened to him by the girl, he though this woman is peacockish, he hesitated about should he go to talk to her or meet her in the future. He hated the whole world !!!
-
#14 Avery Booth on 10 Sep 13He is experiencing feelings just like we do when we have crushes. he is feeling jealous because she is talking to two other guys when he sees her. He is now going to be broken hearted because he never got to give the gift to her, fall in love with her, etc.
-
#15 Bryan Wang on 10 Sep 13The boy was felt angry and foolish. He did so much thing but he got nothing. The Mangan's sister maybe was the young lady in the shop. She was playing a young boy who crush on her. Although, the Mangan's sister did not like him, he still could be her friends.
-
#16 Deker Adelman on 10 Sep 13I think that he is hurt because he was stood up and he really had feelings for her but she didnt feel the same way about him, and think that he notices that and will get over it and realize its not the end of the world.
-
#17 Bixi Zeng on 10 Sep 13The boy is very sad and angry. He crush that girl, but that girl did not know. The girl is talking with others and not renumber who the boy is. The boy is brokenhearted about his first crush.I think, however, that is good start for the boy.
-
#18 Bailey Evans on 10 Sep 13The girl was simply being kind to the boy by inviting him to the bazar. They clearly were not on the same page, which in the end really left the boy heartbroken and shameful. I wonder how it would have changed if he would have vocalized his feelings for her just the slightest bit more?
-
#19 aidan dorvee on 11 Sep 13I think that the anger and other negative emotions that the boy is experiencing are more directed towards himself then to her. I believe that he is angry at himself for believing that she had feelings of the same status that he has for her, and assuming this with no bases. The other feeling that the boy expresses is jealousy, those two boys were able to attract and earn the attention of Mangan's sister while he was quickly dismissed by this girl that ruled his thoughts. This will do nothing but help this young boy from getting hurt as easily in the future.
-
#20 zach harrison on 11 Sep 13The boy was not only angry but also felt cheated, because his uncle didn't give him the money he needed until just before the bazaar closed. He was also afraid that his one chance to impress the girl was ruined because he left empty handed.
-
#21 Cris Boeckel on 14 Oct 13The boy in the story feels angry and upset because he realizes that he will never really have a chance with Magnan's sister. She is older and out of his reach. He finally realizes this at the end of the story when he is interacting with the girl behind the stand.
-
#22 james lee on 15 Oct 13He has a crush on Megan's sister, so just like anyone else when we see our crush talking to other guys we get jealous. so he was heart broken and i think stopped loving her because he realized that it would never happen.
-
#23 sam millard on 17 Oct 13Araby ended with the boy relizing that he isn't prince charming because a girl at one of the stands at the fair was more into two men then him.
-
#24 Rich Ramirez on 30 Oct 13It really feels like this short story isn't like any other in regards to the fact that it doesn't end all happy. He leaves the marketplace feeling very distraught. I think that Joyce does that exact opposite of what Hans Christian Anderson does and most story tellers do in ending the story all happy. I like the controversy that Joyce sets with the theme.
-
#25 Peter E. Rowe on 02 Nov 13Sometimes, our anticipation of an event is so much greater than the actual event itself. The boy is clearly disillusioned. Araby was supposed to be majestically. He seems to realize that his whole journey was a fool's errand.
-
#26 Maryssa Haggett on 04 Nov 13his very heart broken and felt very upset with mangens sister. They were supposed to meet in the bazar, but she was flirting with the two men in there and got the boy got very hurt. he puts his head down and walks away feeling darkness and anger.
-
#27 Jim Talbott on 05 Nov 13I think the boy is hurt because he was stood up, and he is just taking it all out on himself, he things he just isn't good enough, sort of like he had the confidence on his way to araby and lost it after she stood him up like that, and just doesn't understand what he did wrong, rather then just not over thinking it and understanding that its not always a personal reflection of ones self, sometimes things just don't go the way we want them to.

#28 Daniel Shaw-Vicente on 05 Nov 13In my person opinion I believe that this quote was written to reflect how we all act when we have fallen deep into love. In my personal experience I have noticed that we all become weak and extremely vulnerable during the time in which we have recently become enamored with another. We lose sight of most if not everything else around us and within our lives except for the one who holds the key to our hearts. We all become obsessed and insane and everything begins to revolve around the one we love especially our happiness and self worth. However I believe that this quote from the story Araby is addressing this topic and attempting to convey the message that we also become creatures of vanity when we have fallen deep within Love's grasp meaning that we lose sight on what is truly important and focus on something that is not particularly important which in Jame's Joyce's opinion is love. I think that the author believes that Love is a trap that one can only fall in like the small boy in Araby.
-
#29 Pierce Tricarico on 19 Nov 13i think that the ending showed how angry the boy was when he saw the girl, and realized that she was just trying to be nice, and never really had an interest in her. i think he lost sight in what was really going on, and was in a fairytale of what he wanted to happen with this girl.

#30 sam zanta on 03 Dec 13he was so obsessed with how much he liked the girl that he couldn't see that she wasn't interested in him
