#14 Aaron Leffert on 01 Jun 14In Gogol's, The Overcoat, the key thing being criticized is materialistic items do not make up who a person truly is. This is shown when the main character, Akakiy, feels the need to go and get a new overcoat to stop the harassment from other employees in his place of business. Just because you look good, doesn't mean your good. Just because you look smart doesn't mean you are smart and just because you have a nice overcoat doesn't mean you automatically are a better person. The satire in this is just that. The fact that materialistic items show more value than the emotional and physical character of the person itself. The haunting is due to wanting the coat back, and with the excessive use of overcoats in the cold, its easier to steal them.
