That's a key piece of lifelong learning -- the learning is self-funded. These are people who want to learn something and are willing to pay to do so.
As more content, more communities, and more marketplaces spring up online to support these alt-edu endeavors, we may begin to rethink what it means to spend so much time focusing on the classroom when in fact, learning is lifelong.
the Internet is doing far more than opening doors for K-12 and higher education students. It's also a huge boon for "lifelong learners,"
Much of the buzz around the educational benefits of Internet technology has focused on the potential for the classroom -- or perhaps, if we add to that, the boom in mobile technology, the potential to bridge the classroom and the home.
Hi Keith, At some point in the unit we are doing I have each student create a glog showing how all of the pieces we have covered so far fit together. They grab information from youtube, add docume...
To plan out my WebSlides above, I followed this process:
Wrote a short narrative for the introduction
Created a List in Diigo so that I could save my bookmarks to it while bookmarking the web pages I would use.
Actually Bookmarked the web pages that I would use, making sure to highlight and add comments about parts I wanted to call attention to, as well as check the box that said ADD TO LIST and choosing the list I wanted to save bookmarks to.
Recorded my audio using Audacity (free audio recorder that works on Windows, Mac and GNU/Linux computers)
Viewed the MyList page and clicked on WebSlides, then clicked on the preferences to upload my audio.
Adjusted the duration of the slides to match my narration.
Relaxed and enjoyed the audio narrated WebSlide.
Be sure to share your examples of educational Diigo WebSlides!

There are initially two options to choose from. Either displaying a widget on selected or displaying a widget on every page except selected
Ok, now we need an example. Lets say I want to display the default recent comments widget only on the homepage since that is the only place where it makes sense to display it. I would simply add the recent comments widget to the sidebar, click the edit link, select “Display Only On Selected“, check mark the Homepage box and then, click done. The recent comments will now only show up on the homepage.
Feed readers
are probably the most important digital tool for today's learner because they
make sifting through the amazing amount of content added to the Internet
easy. Also known as aggregators, feed readers are free tools that can
automatically check nearly any website for new content dozens of times a
day---saving ridiculous amounts of time and customizing learning experiences for
anyone.
Imagine
never having to go hunting for new information from your favorite sources
again. Learning goes from a frustrating search through thousands of
marginal links written by questionable characters to quickly browsing the
thoughts of writers that you trust, respect and enjoy.
Feed readers can
quickly and easily support blogging in the classroom, allowing teachers to
provide students with ready access to age-appropriate sites of interest that are
connected to the curriculum. By collecting sites in advance and organizing
them with a feed reader, teachers can make accessing information manageable for
their students.
Here are several
examples of feed readers in action:
Used specifically as
a part of one classroom project, this feed list contains information related to
global warming that students can use as a starting point for individual
research.
While there are literally dozens of different feed reader
programs to choose from (Bloglines andGoogle Reader are two
biggies), Pageflakes is a favorite of
many educators because it has a visual layout that is easy to read and
interesting to look at. It is also free and web-based. That
means that users can check accounts from any computer with an Internet
connection. Finally, Pageflakes makes it quick and easy to add new
websites to a growing feed list—and to get rid of any websites that users are no
longer interested in.
What's even
better: Pageflakes has been developinga teacher version of their tooljust for us that includes an online grade tracker,
a task list and a built in writing tutor. As Pageflakes works to perfect
its teacher product, this might become one of the first kid-friendly feed
readers on the market. Teacher Pageflakes users can actually blog and create a
discussion forum directly in their feed reader---making an all-in-one digital
home for students.

PresentationTube Recorder is a simple tool designed to help instructors, students and business professionals record their PowerPoint presentations from the comfort of home or office, and without the need to have Internet connection while recording. The Recorder synchronizes presenter's video, PowerPoint slides, drawing board, and whiteboard and generate videos ready for uploading to PresentationTube network. With visual aids, like the drawing board, presenters can draw lines, curves, graphs, and shapes on the screen to emphasize or clarify their ideas, so the demonstration can be clearer. The whiteboard also allows the presenter to type text while presenting using the keyboard making it an ideal tool to add more details, or explain equations using words, numbers, and symbols. Just follow the instructions below to download and install PresentationTube Recorder. Recorder in your computer. A great iOS and Android app for editing photos and images to show only selected objects in colour on an otherwise monochrome image. Start with a completely greyscale image and add the colours back by moving your finger over the areas you want.
This is a wonderful site and iPad app where you can create and watch video lessons. Make changes to your whiteboard screen, type text, record audio and add images from your computer or Dropbox to create an immersive lesson on any topic you choose. Then embed or share the link for others to view.

I think that diigo is wonderful. It is such a good way to organise your bookmarks. It's also a great way to collaborate on resources. I often find great websites that my colleagues may find useful, though I'm never quite sure if they are worthy of clogging their inboxes. With diigo I can just add to a group list and then everyone can access them.
