Opera diigolet - highlight problems - 577 views

Yes, this is a slightly tricky problem in Diigolet. We have some thought on how to improve it - will add to our To-Do list. However, will not likely to be a high priority since its occurrence is not frequent.

    Michael,

Yes, prototyping website is a great application of Diigo.

Are you and your clients also use Opera exclusively? Have you ever tried out Diigo diigolet or toolbar in any other browser?

By the way, a brand new toolbar is coming soon (FF, IE & Flock) - it's going to be really awesome.

PS. Webslides will be another great way for a website development company to showcase their portfolio to potential clients or do quick guided tour on a subject ... Currently Webslides supports Firefox, IE, Flock and Opera 9.5 - check it out

    Michael,

Can you please recheck the Diigolet in Opera - Just spoke to our engineer - he said the issue that ollitolli had experienced earlier has been solved...

Will take a close look of your post. Thanks for taking the time to write them out. As you know, the more details, the easier is it for us to diagnose the issues.

Which advantage would that have? I just tested whether comments and
notes are already included in full-text searches and they actually are.
So, that can't be the advantage.

    > Also, a couple of pages didn't cache: is there ever a delay? will they

    Here are two relevant threads:

Thread "Full Text Search doesn't work":
    http://forum.diigo.com/topic/350#1216

Core message: There may a delay sometimes but it should be short. In
most cases, the pages will be cached immediately (this is my
    experience).

Thread "Can I update cached pages?":
    http://forum.diigo.com/topic/194#630

Core message: If a page has already been cached, it cannot be re-cached.
The first version of a cached page will always stay the cached version.

The point of the cache is to preserve pages that might otherwise be
    removed from the web.

If a page is removed from the web, the cached version and the notes are
separate entities. One cannot see them together as is normally the case.

Also, when I'm on a computer that doesn't have diigo installed, I again
want to be able to access the cached version with the notes overlaid.
Otherwise, again they are two separate entities.

So, what happens when a page isn't cached after several hours?

OK, now I can see your points.

    > So, what happens when a page isn't cached after several hours?

Normally, caching shouldn't take that long. But I do not know the answer
to your question because I am just a Diigo user myself. Unless you have
put a lot of work into the page by higlighting sections and adding
comments/notes, you could try to delete that page from your personal
bookmark collection and add it again. Maybe that helps.
  • Maggie Tsai

    John,

Thanks for your input. Will consider offering that option. Meanwhile, try clicking on the "about" link for each bookmark - you will see lots of related stuff all nicely presented there.

Caching normally shouldn't take too long, but once in a while our servers get quite busy and some delay may occur. Also, once in a while, certain few pages have somewhat strange behaviors and are not being properly cached - we're looking into that as we're further optimizing our search capability now.

Just convert Diigo group forum to tag forum - 25 views

forum howto news

    Hi everyone,

I just converted this Diigo Central Group Forum from "Categories" to "Tagging".

To do so, it's one simple switch in the "Forum Manage" console for the group manager. Should you have created some categories already, those will automatically be converted to tags.

To add some additional "structure" to our group at this current stage, I'd recommend everyone follows this posting tagging convention: Use "Feature", "Bug", "Discussion", etc. as part of your post tags.

As we reply, we'd also edit your post tags as well to provide some consistency. This will make our group forum's "Tag Cloud" quite useful for anyone who is looking to search for any specific topic, etc.

Note: currently only the group admin (manager and any members designated with moderator status) can edit the post, tags, etc...

Love to hear your comments, suggestions, etc...

I would like to have a permalink to each and every bookmark that I have
on diigo, so I can access it directly, and also share this specific
bookmark with its highlights with my friends and colleagues.

Implement a "permalink" button next to each bookmark, that , when
pressed, will show a page with only this bookmark, and the stuff the
comes up when you press "expand" - it's title, comments, highlights,
annotations, tags, and possibly , some more information from the "about"
page such as who else tagged it.

I forgot what service I used before, it might have been delicious.
Anyway, I was wondering if there is a way to bundle a group of tags
    into one tag.

Say I have some things tagged apples, oranges, peppers, and potatos. I
could have them all linked to a tag named food, but also have a tag
called fruit, that would be be made up of things tagged with apples and
    oranges.

Yes, personally we also found tagging an easier way to find stuff. Of course, traditional category forum is also supported as well, and we offer an easy conversion between two styles for the group administrator to "experiment."

The best of both worlds, hehe :-)

We will do a two-step transition:

    1) Provide a link to the old forum to access data, but all new posts should come here.

    2) When we have some time, will do a data conversion to import old stuff here.

    Great.

    > 1) It would be great to identify the Diigo-Bookmarks base folder. Some users may want to dump their Diigo bookmarks directly into their Favorites folder, or may simply want to change the name of the Diigo-Bookmarks folder.

An additional new way of structuring your data is under development now. Stay tuned :-)

    > 2) Allow the user to define where QuickD favorites get put. I have a temp folder in Favorites\Links that I use for QuickD type favorites now. Because it's in the Links folder it shows up on the IE7 Links toolbar for quick access. It would be useful if I could get QuickD favs to show up in my Temp folder as well.

hm, interesting. This may require some extra work, though certainly doable.
Wonder how much demand is this feature - ie. anything is possible, but we need to be very selective about our development priority to develop something that most users will use, and not just nice-to-have for few users.

    > 3) A way to put only one favorite in the folder structure, regardless of the number of tags, would be great. See next suggestion for ideas.
    >
    > 4) Provide the option to have the Diigo toolbar attempt to delete local bookmarks that have been deleted by the user on the Diigo website. With this option, Diigo could use the current settings to look for a deleted bookmark in the local folder structure. If it's there, delete it. If not (moved by user or something) then do nothing.
    >
    > Long one without a number because it's long and has multiple parts)
    > When adding my own bookmarks to Windows I've generally put them in a folder structure and then renamed the title with a [Tags] keyword. For example the search engine "btjunkie" would live in the folder Favorites\Search\Torrents and have the title "btjunkie.com [Tags] bittorent, search engine". This makes it easy to find favorites whether I'm using WDS or simply navigating the Favorites folder structure. It would be great for Diigo to give more control to the user when 'Local "Bookmarks" folder of your browser" is selected.
    >
    > Right now Diigo adds a bookmark for every tag. This seems like overkill in a folder structure (and creates multiple results when using WDS). Maybe there could be an option to only add the bookmark to a folder for the first tag used for a given bookmark.

Hey, nice. Like your mock-up. Will discuss here, although again, this is not likely to be a super high priority for now, but definitely a good one.

    Another good UI mock-up. Thanks.

Import other bookmarks as public, private and ...? - 60 views

bookmark import
  • Maggie Tsai

Glad that you point it out and think we should put up a better description for the 3rd option.

Basically here is how the 3rd option works: if you have 2 bookmark in del.icio.us, 1 is public, and the other is private. Then, after importing, you also get 1 public 1 private in Diigo.

    Maybe the description should be:

Import to Diigo as: a) All Public, b) All Private c) Duplicate all setting as del.icio.us

The description for c) is still somewhat awkward. Anyone with good suggestion to shorten it and make it pretty clear? Thanks
  • Maggie Tsai

I like the wording "preserve". Also, setting (3) as default is also good.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

    Hi everyone,

We got some press inquiry - they are interested in writing a story about Diigo. However, their editor would like to focus on our users, rather than profiling us. They are interested in connecting with some people who have been using Diigo a while.

Anyone interested and has a good story to share, please let us know, or just drop us an email at info at diigo dot com. Thanks very much for your kind assistance in advance.

Cannot wait to see how this article unfolds :-)

    Hi,

It's a frameset, but Diigo should also be able to mark on it. However, we do notice a new bug introduced by the new version of toolbar - will get it fixed soon. Thanks for bringing it to our attention.

Meanwhile, you can try using Diigolet for pages like this. We tested and put up a public test sticky note using Diigolet - it seems ok.

Thanks for making the special page for us to test - very considerate of you :-)

By the way, please upload your avatar (a favorite photo or icon) in your profile.

Increase size of the Tags field in forum? - 30 views

forum tag
  • Maggie Tsai

    Hi Ole,

    > The "Tags:" field in the forum topic form seems to be set to max. 60 characters. Can you increase it?

I suppose that can be easily done. While tagging is quite useful, personally I'm not crazy about excessive tagging. Because everyone's tagging style and preference is quite different, as the group forum host, I'd like to keep the incoming tags "manageable" especially in a "group env't". So I sometimes do some editing to apply some consistency in the group forum tagging.

In this particular post, for example, the original tags are "forumtopic, tags, topicreplies" --> some tags are fairly unique and likely not used by the majority of group members, so I changed them to "forum, tags"

    Welcome others' input on this.

    > Would it be possible to add tags to individual replies in a topic in the forum?

Anything is possible, but this requires extra effort. Is this feature very needed, or just nice-to-have, and only helpful occasionally?
  • Maggie Tsai

    Hi Ole,

Sounds like a very interesting research. After publishing it, please share with all of us. Love to learn more.

Q: do you really have a strong need to increase the tag field size?

delay in adding bookmarks? - 14 views

    Hi,

Like to clarify a few things:

    1) "I just added about 15 pages to diigo using the toolbar.. but only the first 3 seem to have shown up on the site.." -- > >

    a) were they added one by one via toolbar or website addawebite function?
    b) or were they imported from delicious using the toolbar?

    2) You raised an interesting question about tag with "xxx/yyy" format. We double checked. While you can bookmark something with a tag in that format or import those bookmarks with those tags, and the data do get stored, we do notice that there is actually some complication in displaying

http://www.diigo.com/tag/xxx/yyy (our normal tag url display is http://www.diigo.com/tag/xxx)

While we'll look into it further, this is a rather unusual format and we'd highly recommend that you edit those tags with xxx/yyy format by going to "My tags > > Edit"

Thanks for bringing this to our attention. Hope this helps.

Hey, notice you're an expert use. Great. Welcome to the Diigo community, and glad that you've started to discover Diigo's advanced goodies :-) Look forward to your active participation. See you around
