Le numérique : mirage industriel ou miracle économique ? On nous rebat les oreilles avec cette industrie dont on nous dit qu'elle est en passe de révolutionner nos modes de consommation et notre vie tout court.  Mais où en est ce marché et quelles sont ses perspectives d'essor pour les années qui viennent ? Le groupe PwC a réalisé une étude sur le sujet dont voici la substantifique moelle.

More and more major businesses and industries are being run on software and delivered as online services-from movies to agriculture to national defense. Many of the winners are Silicon Valley-style entrepreneurial technology companies that are invading and overturning established industry structures. Over the next 10 years, I expect many more industries to be disrupted by software, with new world-beating Silicon Valley companies doing the disruption in more cases than not.

MORE than a million robots work in factories around the world, most of them building cars. But in the view of many experts these machines are akin to the mainframe computers of old: big, expensive, inflexible and requiring teams of specialists to instruct them what to do. One of those experts, Rodney Brooks, has long argued that what industry needs is the robotic equivalent of the PC. Over the past several decades, the globalization of the  manufacturing ecosystem has driven more change and impacted  the prosperity of more companies, nations and people than at any  time since the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. Nations around the  world have taken part in and benefited from the rapid globalization of  industry and expansion of manufacturing. Globalization of  manufacturing has been a key driver of higher-value job creation and  a rising standard of living for the growing middle class in emerging  nation economies. This has dramatically changed the nature of  competition between emerging and developed nations as well as  between companies. Recent research confirms manufacturing has  been immensely important to the prosperity of nations, with over  70% of the income variations of 128 nations explained by differences  in manufactured product export data alone. 

Using wikis and digital fabrication tools, Missouri farmer Marcin Jakubowski is open-sourcing the blueprints for 50 farm machines, allowing anyone to build their own tractor or harvester from scratch. And that's only the first step he's taking to write instruction sets for an entire self-sustaining farm operation with equipment costs of under $10,000.

Pour aujourd'hui, je vous livre les sept points clés que résume ce travail dans son Executive Summary. Il ne donnent qu'une petite idée du contenu car le plus important est l'analyse que font les auteurs.  Mais j'y reviendrai car il y a justement dans ce rapport quelques perles rares à mettre en évidence.

Que ce passerait-il si demain n'importe qui pouvait fabriquer presque n'importe quoi ? Ou, pour être un peu moins caricatural, si tout un chacun pouvait fabriquer presque tout ce qu'il voulait ? C'est ce que proposent dès à présent les FabLabs (abréviation de Fabrication laboratory, laboratoires de fabrication), ces ateliers permettant à tout un chacun de concevoir et construire tout et n'importe quoi. Quels que soient leurs noms (TechShops, HackerSpaces, FabLabs…) des centaines d'espaces de ce type ont récemment vus le jour de part le monde. Que s'y passe-t-il ? Comment y travaille-t-on ? Quelles nouvelles perspectives ces endroits permettent-ils ? Telle était la question que la conférence Lift à Marseille voulait poser à certains de ceux qui sont à l'origine de ces nouveaux espaces censé repenser l'avenir de la production.

3D printing has been boggling minds the world over for years now, but recently the technology has become even more accessible. An object is printed in three dimensions from a digital file by layering solid materials in specific patterns. Companies like Shapeways are helping to make 3D printing consumer-friendly, putting not only the printers but the printed items themselves into the hands of everyday people.
