Coffee and cancer risk: a summary overview - 0 views

  •
2017 meta-analysis finds no increase relative risk (RR) of cancer with coffee consumption.  First, this must consider all the "other" junk put in coffee these days.  Second, and most important, this study looked at RR which tells us nothing about risk.  Studies like this don't do much more than confuse the general public, doctors, and judges--recent judge ruling in California that coffee needs a carcinogenic lable.  Third, epigenetis will tell us about individual risk.  I am growing more concerned that the majority of studies published today are merely statistical dances to ensure publication.  Is it good that no RR was found? yes, does that give any indication of absolute risk?  No.  Take home: enjoy your morning cup of joe as nature prescribed--no additives.

Salivary Sex Hormone Measurement in a National, Population-Based Study of Older Adults - 0 views

  •
Another study supports saliva hormone testing.  This study involved 2,722 individuals and tested estradiol, progesterone, DHEA and testosterone in men and women.  All of these are sex hormones.  Someone needs to tell the insurance companies that the overwhelming evidence supports saliva hormone testing.  But, that would mean they are even interested in the science.

Only abstract available here.  The quote that "the toxicity of vitamin E is very low" tells the story.  Always have levels evaluated to ensure need.  In this review of human studies, doses up to 3,200 IU daily "led to no consistent adverse effects".  Also consider the effects of vitamin K effects in those on vitamin E therapy.

High total cholesterol levels in late life associated with a reduced risk of dementia - 0 views

  •
higher cholesterol levels associated with a decreased dementia risk in the elderly population.  Stop the press!!  Yes, basic physiology tells us this. The brain loves cholesterol, cholesterol is needed. The question is: what will be the impact of "neurodegenerative diseases" by the overzealous use of statins?

Cholesterol-lowering therapy and cell membranes. Stable plaque at the expense of unsta... - 0 views

  •
This article tells it all in the conclusion: "Changing our current practice pattern could take many years, but we may one day prescribe cholesterol-raising medications to certain patients". The long term effect of lowering cholesterol MAY stabilize plaques (not reduce), but at the expense of the brain. So, we may all have stable plaques, but we just won't know it because our brains will be fried.

Estrogen attenuates glutamate-induced cell death by inhibiting Ca2+ influx through L-ty... - 0 views

  •
Estradiol inhibits glutamate mediated influx of calcium and thus cell death in cell line.  Glutamate, the principle excitatory neurotransmitter, is involved in neurodegeneration through activation of calcium channels.  This study of cell line cultures found that Estradiol inhibits this process.  I question whether this is applicable to both men and women.  Time will tell.

Progesterone Metabolites Regulate Breast Cell Tumors - 0 views

  •
As much fanfare that is given to ER/PR + breast cancer, the large percentage of breast cancers are ER/PR -.  Thus, hormonal therapy doesn't work...at least that is how the story goes. This study finds the metabolites of Progesterone to be equally telling.  Two Progesterone metabolites play significant roles in growth versus inhibition of growth.  The metabolite 5alpha-dihydroprogesterone is procarcingenic in in vitro and in vivo studies and the metabolite 3alpha-dihydroprogesterone inhibits the pro growth effects in the same in vitro and in vivo studies.

Cervical Collar Hard Adjustable With Chin - 0 views

  •
The soft cervical collar is constructed of foam rubber and covered with a stockinette material. Normally, the closure is achieved with Velcro. Depending on the patient's pathology and body structure, physician and/or orthotist will determine the proper height of the collar. When worn, the soft cervical collar is a reminder to keep in head and neck in a restricted position. It is the mildest design of cervical immobilization. Cervical collars are applied to blunt trauma patients all the time. And most of the time, the neck is fine. It's just those few patients that have fracture or ligamentous injury that really need it. The Cervical Collar provides firm, comfortable support which helps to relieve neck discomfort while providing extra support. Cervical Collar has a convenient hook and loop closure which allows the unit to be adjusted for a proper fit. The Cervical Collar is constructed of soft, porous cotton cover for comfort which is over polyfoam for the best support. Cervical collars are an orthotic device used primarily in the treatment of neck injuries and strains. The most common use of cervical collars is during recovery after surgery on the cervical spine. They are also used in whiplash injuries and conditions like Cervical Radiculopathy, which is caused by the nerves in the neck compressing due to herniated disks in the spinal cord. The main function of the cervical collar is to immobilize the neck and hold it in a gravity-neutral position Tynor Cervical Collar Hard Adjustable is used for supporting, immobilizing or adjusting the neck in the flexion, extension, or hyperextension position. Recommended where a rigid immobilization of the cervical region is required. Anatomical shape. Comfortable edge padding. Adjustable height. Slight weight. Latex free. The soft cervical collar is not designed to completely restrict motion. It depends on providing resistance to movement, which tells the patient to restrict their movements. The soft collar i
