    What digital footprint are you building? It is good practice to review the importance of maintaining a positive digital presence with your students whenever there is an online component to a class. It is important that this "born digital" generation understands the serious, future consequences of what they post through online media. I chose this resource because it is important for teachers to show students how their digital footprint can be exposed on line and to be aware of what they are posting and how. These short videos are very informative and easy for busy teachers to learn from and share with students.

    This is an interesting presentation given at 'EUNIS 2014 Conference: Higher Education in the Digital Era' by professors from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB). Although the presentation concentrates on UAB experience and the COURSERA platform, it gives also a European perspective on use of MOOCs. According to the presentation, there were 510 MOOCs in April 2014 in Europe. Some findings are especially thought provoking. The UAB course on Egyptology had 25350 initially enrolled students. Only 1/3 of them watched the first video, and a completion certificate was issued to only 2950 students (11.7%). Another course (Pre-Calculus) had only 0.01% completion ratio. Something to really think about!

    I've read in Japanese paper that Ricoh and Canon started producing and announced 3D printers. The market has been expanding. It used such as a design of dental work etc. I don't think it's matter of that "open source" is winning or not. It's been and will continue to utilize, but how to use it could be changing. Maybe more creative way, people may need to be smarter about how to analyze to SELECT right source before analyze the source of data, etc..

    Interesting article but he couldn't really develop a cogent argument in a op-ed. However, "open is the new green" could be true. That's why I want to learn about 'open' now so I can be ahead and stay ahead of what happens to 'open' when it gets reduced, like 'the environment' did to 'green'.

    Open Access also opens up a much wider ability to adopt other forms of information transmission than print. The embedding of the videos into this MOOC is a case in point. As librarians, we are then challenged to ensure that our intermediation, whether through Information Literacy training or direct reference assistance, takes into account the growing need of users to be able to make sense of all forms of communication.     It's common knowledge that the amount of online rich media consumption is increasing exponentially on an annual basis. But how much video traffic is projected over the next five years? And what does this growth really mean for global residential, business, and mobile subscribers and the service providers that support them? I have used this infographic many times since I have found it. There are times in presentations or when trying to educate people on the size and scope of the internet that words do not do enough. The pictures and numbers and scaling provided by this infographic conveys the message quite well even if the numbers are losing their meaning because they are so large. The other important part of this infographic is that is is updated constantly. When I first found this link it was referring to the year 2014, as of this post it is now referencing 2015 and what will be available on line at that time.

    "Project Information Literacy (PIL) is a large-scale, national study about early adults and their research habits, conducted in partnership with the University of Washington's iSchool." This website contains a wealth of knowledge about the literacy habits of students making the transition into university. In particular, check out the "publications" tab for some of the project's preliminary results, and both published and news articles on the topic. The site also contains links to other relevant resources on the same topic (in the "Practical PIL" tab).

    I love the idea that progress and science being based on communication. Often the idea that I have in my mind is a scientist working alone, and that is never truly how the great break-throughs come, but rather from building on the science that we have learned about previously. I still have a problem with the Author Pay part of Open Access publishing, and it seems like it is not actually "Open" if you have to pay to play. The Utopic Version is really the way that I think of "Open" publishing even with all the pit falls of finding the Utopia. I like the rebirth by giving the onus to the reader to review, and that is a model that works as seen by Wikipedia, because people are willing to aid progress with out conventional compensation. I understand all of the problems with this, but I love the possibility.

    Adding a few high quality photos is a great way to improve a website, article or presentation - but be careful. A search engine like Google Images will quickly locate just about any shot you could ever want, but using them will almost certainly violate someone's copyright.

    This is a great contribution. I looked into TinEye, and had no idea a service like that existed! It definitely makes you think twice when adding pictures to presentations and websites. I wonder where the line is drawn when it comes to copyright. If I were to use x photographer's picture in an academic paper and I cited it, that would not be copyright infringement (right?!), but once I start making money off of that paper then we enter the world of legal issues. I get it, it's not fair to make money off of someone else's work. But is money the only thing that I would be benefitting from by using this picture in a paper that I would sell? What if my paper was on a hot subject and it therefore became "big" in academia or even pop culture? Am I not adding positively to my reputation by writing this paper, which happens to feature someone else's photograph? It's funny that money is the only thing that matters in copyright, unless I have not understood the law in its entirety. Any clarification would be awesome.

    Thanks Kim! I didn't become aware of the importance of this until I began helping teens in the library produce video book talks. The importance of knowing your image source and respecting its creator/owner is not a top priority for teens, however I tried to stress the availability and convenience of sites like the ones mentioned in the article you shared. Its cache of resources I can't wait to utilize and share.

    Is good to be aware of credits and source for what is being used online...there is the phenomena of cut and paste thesis for students willing to degree....can't find the source by the hundred times the same thesis has been copy around the web...It's enough to take a phrase of what the student "has written" to find clones around the web...what a coincidence... :)

This article is relevant to this course, as it relates to the notion of critical consumption; some users are unable to filter information effectively, which should be recognized as a concern.     Some might argue that this article shows the downside of connected learning and e-resources, however this is not the case. Certain web activities mentioned in the paper such as chat rooms, social media, and video games are not the focus of this course. Open Knowledge deals with the light side of the internet, which is the interconnectivity, the accelerated learning, and the ability to publish ones own content. The internet can definitely be misused, but not every web activity is "junk food". If someone obsessively became a mathematician and ultimately ended up being the best mathematician in the world due to "addiction" people would call him or her a genius. The trick is to filter which content and activities one engages in.

A couple of weeks ago I suggested and made a google spreadsheet in which everyone that wants to participate can add useful links to open knowledge resources. Would you like to drive this project with me?     Gracias por tu contribución. I liked it so much because of "Marine LitterWatch" because it is a really big problem in Mexico, it can be applied by government to clean the populated beaches, el Cañón del Sumidero or Sumidero Canyon, and to sensibilize people. Additional to that, the app can be used in big cities to decide where to colocate new tanks of rubbish.
