As with the Architecture dictionary, this is also an online resource, free to all tuse. What distinguishes this is, however, the source of the dictionary. Whereas the architecture dictionary, as with Wikipedia, was started by people wishing to share knowledge and information on topics of personal interest, this has been placed online by one of the most respected imprints in reference publishing, Merriam-Webster.

The visual approach lends itself to the digital world, but the hierarchies still need some negotiation. Nonetheless, a good resource to make available and also a good resource for educators to use.

Although Wikipedia is the most widely known open source source of information, there are also some extremely useful resources being placed for use by all. This dictionary is aimed at providing a single point or entry for "architectural terminology". People wishing to add need to register, so there is a form of control.

Interestingly, the latest added term is "open access"!

This journal is now the second that we are putting online - but it is the first fruits of our recently adopted Open Access policy at CPUT. Initiatives like this are needed so as to showcase academic endeavours from the South. The key will now be for this journal to become accessed and accepted in the North as well. In addition, we can hope that the messages and research contained in this journal will be able to contribute to the solution of issues and challenges in the South, with the research being grounded here.

The organization Drussa (development research uptake in Sub-Saharan Africa) is an example of an initiave from the South to improve the impact of research from the South. Through this organization there is a counteraction against the overwhelming impact of North research, as highlighted in several articles for the module. Particularly effective is the page "It started here" which highlights some of the effective applications of research from Africa, in Africa.

In a way a strange choice to put undr Open Access. However this daily publication (also with uk and us editions) is very much linked to the idea of teh citizen journalist. In this case, however, it is a selective, reviewed set of journalists, with a moderated comment ability. Nonetheless, a good example of opening up conversations and giving access to the types of scholarly thoughts and debates around current topics

Not Just Literate, but Transliterate: Encouraging Transliteracy Adoption in Library Ser... - 0 views

Open Access also opens up a much wider ability to adopt other forms of information transmission than print. The embedding of the videos into this MOOC is a case in point. As librarians, we are then challenged to ensure that our intermediation, whether through Information Literacy training or direct reference assistance, takes into account the growing need of users to be able to make sense of all forms of communication. This fairly short article addresses this issue and states the challenge we face succintly and to the point!
